According to someone over on TLW, Purslow isn't on holiday but is actually negotiating about a player from Real Madrid.

I posted the link about Royston Drenthe last night, could be him on loan. He's a left winger, than can play as a full back.
He's also a total nutter, isn't he? Still, a loan deal would make sense in our current circumstances, as would a LB who can also play LW (or vice versa).

and now there's this (seems every LB anywhere in Europe is being linked with us now) :

Experienced PSV defender Carlos Salcido has attracted the interest of Premier League giants Liverpool with his good performances at the World Cup, according to The Daily Mirror.

Liverpool parted company with Fabio Aurelio earlier this summer and Emiliano Insua is set to leave the Reds for Fiorentina in a deal said to be worth around £5 million. Therefore, manager Roy Hodgson wants to add a new left-back to his squad and the former Fulham boss reportedly considers Mexico's Salcido, who can also cover in the centre of defence, as the perfect addition to his back-line.

Salcido joined PSV from Guadalajara in the summer of 2006 and has since developed into a key player at the Eindhoven side. The 30-year-old has made 121 Eredivisie appearances for PSV, scoring three goals in the process. The versatile defender's current contract with runs until the summer of 2012, but the Eredivisie titans are keen to cash in on Salcido this transfer window.

The report suggests he would be available for a cut-price deal worth an initial figure of just £2.5 million (€3m). That has also alerted other top clubs, though, particularly those without big transfer budgets to spend this summer. La Liga side Valencia and Serie A runners-up Roma are said to be the Reds' biggest rivals for the player's signature. Wigan Athletic are also said to be interested, but may find themselves struggling to compete with the appeal of the other three clubs.

It's a dream scenario that within a year we get shut of the owners, Purssssslow, Old Uncle Roy, and get some proper investment and a great manager like Mourinho in at Liverpool.

Then 2010 will seem like a bad dream, and we can all pretend it didn't happen

Only, it is a bit hard to pretend it has not happened when it actually has not happened.

Some of us are still looking forward to a brand new season.

Yeah I like what I've seen of him. Relatively little, admittedly. But he's quick, strong and decent on the ball. He scored a free kick from his own half last season!

I think we'd be unfortunate for him to turn into a total dud like the recent string of left backs we've had. SHOULD be a decent signing.

I liked Figueroa on the few occasions I had the "pleasure" of watching Wigan last season. I'd be happy with the signing.

Style of play

He is mostly known for his left foot, his powerful shot, his ability to take set-pieces and his long throw

He's Riise in disguise.

I know I've seen him quite a number of times but other than a vague recollection of what he looks like, I can't say I know anything about him.

He sounds very much like an average sort of meh player. Someone tell me he's better than that.

I think he's a solid left back, and has looked quite good for Wigan the few times I have seen him. I'd be happy with this signing.

I'd tend to agree with that. I seem to remember he played very well against us at theirs. Not the flagship signing some might've hoped for but he's proven in the Premiership, which makes it less of a risk.

Nope.
Lol.
I dont mind Figueroa btw. Im just fucking with you. He's better'n Insua and Bridge and Aurelio and Dossena combined. In fact in a game of 4 on 1 on a five a side pitch id back the Honduran.

I just want a non-shit LB, i'd bum off an average one quite easily given the lack of a good, not made of glass one.

Do you still have to pay for the cam like the rest of us?

Any team can get away with average players at full back. Steady eddies, no flair required, with evidence of decent defensive ability. That will do for me please. So if Figueroa is that man for less than £5 mil, do it.

If we're able to flog Insua standard for £5M, we should probably pay more than that for a good LB

We were a sinking ship last season because we played with a gaping fucking HOLE at left-back. Simply filling that hole - no matter how 'average' the filler - will instantly allow us to sail onwards and upwards this season. Figueroa would be a great signing, just as selling Insua for actual money is great business as well.
