So, is Gomez the best striker in the world at the moment?

He's knocking them in for fun in the Bundesliga. He's got no problem doing it for the national side.

He's putting them in against all comers in the CL.

It didn't seem to rate a mention anywhere but the same CL round that Messi was being praised as the greatest ever and scoring 5 in a CL match, Gomez quietly knocked in 4 and made it look like he was in cruise control while doing so.

He can do it in the air, on the ground, in the area or from outside; good service or not he just puts it in the back of the net.

Anyone think of another striker in the same class?

He's having a great year ... but I'd like to see it over another year or two before calling him one of the best in the world.

Hasn't he been scoring for fun these last two seasons?
It must have been the threat of being loaned out to us at the start of last season that got him to put his arse in gear🙁

39 in 45 last year ... 14 in 45 in his 1st year with Bayern.

I tend to view the Bundesliga as a league that is highly competitive and creates great talent, but kinda makes goalscorers look far better than they really are. Dzeko (36 in 42, 29 in 48, 11 in 19) is a good example.

That being said, he's been phenomenal this year ... and is amongst the best in the world currently (with Messi, Ronaldo, RvP, Zlatan etc)

Messi is a striker and he's the best in the world, taking nothing away from Gomez though.

This is the second year of it. Torres was arguably the best striker in the world after 2 seasons with us. Gomez had 39 in 44 last season and has 37 in 41 so far this season. Im not saying he is the best, but right now on his form he's probably third in the world behind Messi and Ronaldo. Please don't anyone say they're wingers, they're not, Theyre not the most conventional strikers but theyre still strikers.

Edit: Oooh, just saw Mystics post. Ah you get the picture 😉

I understand the point of Messi and Ronaldo but they're a totally different type of player to Gomez; neither of them could lead the line IMO, take on the best CB's the game has to offer every minute of every match. They come from deeper and wider; I'm not saying that makes them lesser players but they'd both find it a lot tougher if they were playing in the position Gomez does from start to finish.

They both need a striker to lead the line or neither would be anywhere near as effective. Gomez leads the line every game; holds the ball up when needed as well as anyone going around and puts it in the net better than pretty much anyone else.

As has been pointed out he's now done it two seasons straight. What impresses me about him in terms of goals is he puts away the ones that are laid on a plate for him and the ones that aren't....... well, he puts them away as well.

Maybe there's a third year failure coming but right now I'd have him ahead of any other striker in world football.

Ronaldo could lead then line and pretty much did it at the scum as has been pointed out. Ibra leaving Barca was so that Messi could play more through the middle and call him what you want but since he's started to play through the middle he's scored over 100 goals and counting in 2 seasons. You may see Gomez as the best conventional striker in the world but like it or not you just cannot ignore the fact that both Ronaldo and Messi are strikers.

It's no coincidence he plays with ribery, robben and the rest. He's a good striker though.

Was the match he scored 4 the one where Ribery was raping his way down the left of the pitch setting up tap in's regularly?

Touch of Andy Cole, eh? How many good chances does he need to score a goal? Best striker in the world? He was playing against him -

Yea he was well shit last night and looked like a bit if a sulk after he had missed a few good chances the drog is miles better

he was so immobile he made me nan look sprightly and she's been dead 10 yrs !!

Misses too many chances but with Muller, Ribery and Robben making them its easier to get by.
