I rather liked Kanchelski's use of the word 'disgusting' to describe them recently - A wonderfully underused adjective to describe a football team. Particularly apt in UTD's case.
Rafa mostly did that against teams that were better than us at the time.LVG tactics are similar that of Rafa/Jose.
Keep in tight and rely on opponents to make a mistake and take the chance to score/win.
Major differences in approach to that of ginsoak/whinger/klopp etc

When it came to teams like Real Madrid and Manchester United, he just went out and smashed them.
Agent van gaal's performance is exemplary and we should get fully behind him. He's following on excellently from agent moyes who was awarded the highest medal we could award him. Plan b if agent van gaal gets rumbled is agent giggs, we've already got him inside the site ready incase we need him.
What? He played it cagey against better sides, but let his hair down and went hog-wild against the likes of Real and Man Utd?
Wouldn't have Man U there but Rafa did tend to play a high tempo game against teams who weren't used to it.What? He played it cagey against better sides, but let his hair down and went hog-wild against the likes of Real and Man Utd?
Louis van Gaal dropped a clanger after Manchester United’s win over CSKA Moscow by getting Chris Smalling’s name wrong … again.
Van Gaal made the mistake of calling the defender “Mike Smalling” while sat alongside him at a press conference in San Jose during United’s pre-season tour in July.
And it seems the United manager is still to learn the centre-back’s proper name.
The United manager said: “David de Gea saved us and after that Michael Smalling has saved us.”
Smalling recently spoke about the case of mistaken identity for the first time.
“The players don’t call me Mike, but a lot of the fans do,” Smalling said with a smile after United’s 0-0 draw with Manchester City last month.
“Even if you go to Russia or wherever, it’s ‘Mike! Mike! Mike!’
“It’s going to stick with me forever, that one.”
You've just been whooshed. What? He played it cagey against better sides, but let his hair down and went hog-wild against the likes of Real and Man Utd?

He was joking.
I do like Van Gaal's habit of referring to Chris Smalling as 'Mike'. He's done it now in about five pressers in a row. He did it last summer with Smalling sitting right there by his side, and even after that he STILL does it, and did it again last night. It just amuses me to think of poor Smalling sitting listening, thinking, 'FFS: IT'S CHRIS!!!!! CHRIS!!!!!!!!!!!'
He's saying he needs a world class strikerOh dear...
Luis Suarez or Sergio Aguero would score for us - Van Gaal
Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal believes his side would have scored more goals this season if they had a striker like Sergio Aguero or Luis Suarez.
The Dutchman saw his side draw 0-0 with West Ham, a fifth such scoreline in their past nine games.
"The question is would Luis Suarez or Sergio Aguero score if they were here?" Van Gaal told BBC Radio Manchester.
"That is a question mark. You never know. I think they would, though."
Van Gaal, 64, added: "We've created enough chances to score, so that was not the problem."
"The most important thing is you dominate, create and you finish. Football is about scoring goals. The first two basic aspects of football we have done," Van Gaal added.
"When you don't finish from a metre in front of an empty goal, you cannot say anything more. You have to finish and that's the only problem we have. We played very well especially in the second half - but you have to finish.
"The goals are coming. That is my strong belief."

He basically just said, "our strikers are useless".
All this while Chicharito is on a great scoring run in the Bundesliga.
That's even worseHe's saying he needs a world class striker
Therefore proving Rooney is not world class
Cant believe we conceded 3 goals to that shower of shite.
Would have been a different story with Klopp in charge.
