Man Utd: Paul Scholes' criticism 'won't hurt me' - Louis van Gaal
Manchester United boss Louis van Gaal has dismissed criticism by former player Paul Scholes of his team's style of play, saying "sticks and stones will break my bones, names won't hurt me".
Ex-midfielder Scholes, who played 718 games for United, said he "would not enjoy" playing for Van Gaal and there was "a lack of creativity and risk".
He made the remarks following United's exit from the League Cup on Wednesday.
Van Gaal told the media Scholes did not "have the responsibility" to comment.
"Is he saying this for the benefit of the club or benefit of himself?" he asked.
United have failed to score in their past two games and have the lowest goals return in the Premier League's top six.
However, Van Gaal feels Scholes' criticism of his tactics is unwarranted.
"I don't agree with his opinion," he said. "I always take risks. Manchester United is always entertaining."
Scholes, a member of United's famed 'Class of 92', praised their current defence as having been "coached brilliantly" but said any striker would struggle to score in Van Gaal's side.
'When we lose and lose I shall be finished'

But the Dutchman believes Scholes' tactical assessment would be better delivered privately to coaching staff, which includes long-time former team-mate Ryan Giggs.
"I cannot defend myself. He is a legend," said Van Gaal.
"But when you are a legend, you have to speak with the manager, or his friend Ryan Giggs, or [executive vice-chairman] Ed Woodward and say things like this.
"We are improving a lot but it takes three years.
"But when Mr Scholes says I have to go, then I must go. But that is not his responsibility, it is that of [Manchester United owners] the Glazers and Mr Woodward.
"When we lose and lose and lose I shall be finished. I know that. But we are improving. We now have 20 points from 10 games. Last year it was 13."
United have confirmed striker Memphis Depay will miss Saturday's trip to Crystal Palace, although they have not said what injury he is suffering.

United's fans are already beginning to turn on LvG because of their style of play and continuing to use Rooney as striker. They are generally as sick as a pig that we got Klopp. Such a nice feeling 🙂

I had a quick glance at Redcafe this morning - It's a weird place these days. Gone (mostly) are the preening shit eating grin fuck heads that gloried in their pomp. Now they are replaced by nervous, whining fannies that all hate LVG and are incredibly jealous of the fact Klopp is now managing LFC.

It's a strange one reading it - They almost feel it's their god given right that he should have gone to them. The arrogance is still there though. They kind of remind me of an angry Chihuahua these days.

It's always nice to hear moans coming from that club, but surely the only relevant thing is that they're still doing pretty well in the league. They've brought in a couple of bright young talents with plenty of potential, they've got a fairly strong defence and they can certainly win most matches despite not playing that well or attractively. That puts them in a far better position than we were in, say, the Souey era. Obviously I hope the ill-feeling gets worse and worse but I can't see anything equivalent to the fun days of Moyes to make me rub my hands together.

I quite agree - I'm merely saying it must be an odd experience being a scum fan at the moment. This seems to be echoed by the imbeciles that post on redcafe. I guess I'm taking those as some kind of representative cross section of their entire fan base which is maybe a little unfair. I can't really help it @gkmacca - I guess it's because I support LFC and fucking despise the scummers. Slightly immature of me maybe but I don't care. I love a good Manc bashing. Especially when it's their own fans who are doing it. I agree it's not quite 'Moyes' levels of hilarity yet but the signs are good 🙂

The dissatisfaction felt amongst fans hopefully will feed into the players and cause negativity. LVG has spent something like £300m over two seasons but the number of chances they create per game is worst it has been since before the era of Fergie

They are a shower mate. They have a lot of quality in their squad which has scored them some points and made their position in the league slightly more respectable. 300Million tends to do that. Yesterdays game Vs Palace was a great example. They really ought to have been beat. LvG is killing them slowly and it's beautiful to behold.

Mate, I hope you're right, but reports of their death have been exaggerated before. Like macca says, they're still there or thereabouts and, while they may not be getting top marks for artistic impression under Mad Louie, he might be laying the foundations for something better under his successor.

To be fair RedCafe has a huge user-base in the many thousands, many are fans from other clubs in the PL, BL and La Liga, and some of those are not only very intelligent they are very knowledgeable. Of course they also have more than their fair share of kids and dolts, which you have to wade through.

And as LvG (or was it their MD) has stated already, they won't hesitate to spend another 200M. There is no way they are going away and we can only hope City can keep them away from the title until we're ready 🙂

I tend to disagree on that. Chris Smalling aside, the rest of the defense is pretty average. Luke Shaw is obviously missing after a good start to the season, but Darmian has been hit and miss following the initial hype. Playing wingers as FBs is also hardly indicative of strong defence. Blind is a weak link at CB, and Jones isn't top class either.

I guess it helps when 2 defensive midfielders protect the back four, but that "strong defence" leaves very little threat up front. How many shots on target have United midfielders contributed from open play so far this season?

The presence of De Gea contributes a lot to the strength of their defence.
This guy is a top top GK.

I'm still hoping he'll go next summer. That said, they have the money to replace him with quality if he does.

Van Gaal's football may not be attractive, but when played properly they'll win more games than they lose.

His tactics aren't dissimilar to Mourinho, it's all about stopping the other team playing, & waiting for an error.

Yesterday they had a couple of chances that they should have scored.

The big issues they have is an out of form Rooney who looks like he doesn't have an effective position despite his many strengths (similarly to Stevie with us in years gone by) which doesn't unbalance the rest of the side with his inclusion & a lack of top class quality in attack.

He'll have them winning, of that I have little doubt, unfortunately. He won't have them playing good football though.

You are underrating a lot of their players. Along with Arsenal and Spurs, they have the lowest goals conceded this season. Irrespective of what you think about the individual quality of the players, they do have a good defensive system, that cannot be argued.

I am not questioning the defensive organization at all, but a huge chunk of it is down to the protection given to the back four from two of Schneiderlin, Carrick and Schweinsteger who offer next to nothing in the last third.

As has already been said here, LVGs system appears to work in the sense that it is likely to get United to a top four finish. However, spoiled fans or not, what is the point in being served garbage every week and finishing 4th?

They definitely are not getting value for the money spent, I agree with you on that. However, I think LVG will leave Man Utd in a decent shape for his successor, like he did at Barca and Bayern.

Manchester United manager Van Gaal's tactics are 'disgusting' - Kanchelskis

Former Man Utd winger Andrei Kanchelskis is the latest former player to stick the boot in on Louis van Gaal.

Andrei Kanchelskis has branded Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal 's tactics against CSKA Moscow last month as 'disgusting'.
Anthony Martial 's second-half header earned United a draw in the Russian capital, however United have not scored in the following five hours and 25 minutes.
Kanchelskis, a member of Sir Alex Ferguson's first great side that won successive Premier Leagues and a domestic double, was a vibrant and quicksilver winger who won the club's Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award before he was sold to Everton in 1995.
United host CSKA in the return tie on Tuesday night and Kanchelskis is adamant the Russian champions can go one better than their 2009 3-3 draw at Old Trafford.

"The first game against CSKA showed that it’s possible to win against this team," Kanchelskis said.

"I was at the stadium and I was surprised how disgustingly United played in the first half. A lot of ball control but no sharpness at all.
"In the second-half it got better because of the substitution of Bastian Schweinsteiger, who was slowing the game down. I guess, Manchester United is not his team.

"It’s in the history and tradition of Man United to play wide and be sharp at the flanks but there is nothing like this now.
"Yes, changes in the second half had worked. Marouane Fellaini was a good sub and, if he were used properly, he could be very useful."

The Russian is so unimpressed with Van Gaal's approach he believes the Dutchman is not suited to managing United.
"Van Gaal is too pragmatic, his footballers play like robots," Kanchelskis told Sport Express.
'Why the hell did you play him up front again?''Why the hell did you play him up front again?'
"They are kept within a strict framework, they are not allowed to improvise, contrary to what Ferguson allowed us to do.
"Van Gaal, of course, is a good coach but, in my opinion, he is not for Manchester United. I’m looking at his game for the second season now.
Rooney continues to be a hindrance to UnitedRooney continues to be a hindrance to United
"He says that the transformation is going on, but I still couldn’t understand what he is looking for.
"There is an impression that he doesn’t know what he wants. No creative players, no wingers. Nobody could serve Wayne Rooney.
"The current Manchester is not the same as it was under Ferguson."

I know he probably gets lost a bit in translation, but I find the guy utterly eccentric in his interviews, does anyone ever have a fucking clue what he's banging on about?

And his comments yesterday about Rooney were utterly pathetic "I told my squad that he's our most important player, more than them", or words to that effect. If Rodgers had said something like that he'd have been taken to the cleaners over it.

It's a combination of those factors. He's nuts for a start-off, and his English is still relatively poor for a Dutchman (though in fairness it's the third foreign language he's had to learn in the course of his managerial career).

I'd love to think all this was indicative of that whole club coming apart at the seams, but it isn't a safe assumption to make with that lot.

They are our biggest rivals. In spite of their league position, former players wading in with criticism which will feed into team confidence.
