He tackled well, got stuck in, play some nice passes and did some nice touches. Credit where its due, he played awesome. Brendan your just thick

people doggedly stick to their point of view (except oncy whose opinion changes weekly 😉 ) because you get pounced on for changing your mind.
if (for example) KHL came out and said 'ya, poulsen is indeed shite'

would the reaction be;
a) well done KHL for admitting the obvious

or

b) ha ha

See, its this kind of nonsense isn't it?

If Lucas suddenly turns into a decent player then great, but that doesn't suddenly mean that everyone who has said he was shit for the last few years was wrong. He was shit.

In the same way its like saying that those who said that Hodgson made bad decisions and looked out of his depth must have been wrong just because we have now started winning.

Not saying lucas is the best midfielder in the world, just after we all give him so much slack its good for him to proove us wrong for the past few weeks. Same with hodgson. Gotta give credit where it is due

Only reason people are jumping on bren is because he can't give lucas credit for yesterday and he focuses on previous matches where he's been shite. I can understand this as he doesn t want to lose face, hiwever lucas deserved more than a throw away "alright" review

I getcha Richey, but you can't fault a supporter for being glad when a player/team/coach comes good after facing ridicule for ages.

Also, you are giving the detractors the benefit of revised history. These "I told you so" threads aren't directed at those who said Lucas or Roy "was performing badly". They are directed at those that have written people off for good, or constantly slag people off.

I've compared it to debating rival fans in the past. As a supporter, when someone constantly slags off a member of your club, it's nice to be able to point back at it when the going is good.

It's just sad that it has to happen between fellow reds.

Yep, fair point.

It just seems rather odd to me that one week a player is rightly called useless for putting in yet another pitiful performance, which Lucas has done consisently week after week, yet as soon as he has a couple of decent games everyone is expected to admit to having being totally wrong all of those times if they aren't singing the player's name from the rooftops and naming their kids after him.

Essentially Lucas may have started doing the job he is being highly paid to do. Good. About time too.

Another example would be Torres. A lot on here have been slating him this season, saying he was playing like he didn't care etc. Suddenly he is the hero again, and quite rightly too, but it doesn't mean that those who said he was playing badly before were wrong at the time.

I still don't rate Lucas despite his last 3 performances. I hope he proves me wrong and becomes a decent and integral part of a succesful LFC team but I very much doubt he will.

Lucas looking stronger. His big flaw for me was he always seemed to get bullied in matches. He often looked weak, like men against boy....but its not just about physical strength, look at Hamann for example; he was not going to win any mr. universe contests any time soon.

With experience, he may be learning a few tricks, better positioning too, which will help his game and in turn build his confidence going forward?

Probably best to just enjoy it while it lasts.

But well done Lucas, he has improved greatly since he started his twitter page, all the Rawkites gave him a boost in confidence, I think.

I haven't looked on there but I would like to think that RAWK are really slagging off Lucas now, moaning about how shit he has become the last few weeks and speculating that he has probably started rooming with the evil Carra and become one of his troops.

I love how much it's utterly paining Brendan to post in this thread. Not as much as it must utterly pain him to watch Lucas play well. Sitting there praying that he fucks up or has a shit game. Ha ha fucking ha.

Face it Bren, if he continues with this form it should be the end of you as a Liverpool supporter nevermind this forum.
No, I think if I leave this forum it'll probably be after making several vaguely racist comments while drunk. That would be the way to exit with the requisite...bang
Ha, predictable.

You do not have a single leg to stand on in this thread. If Lucas carries on this form, it'll make you the biggest embarassment on the internet bar none.

Worse than anything Dreamy and Fox have ever said, worse than Glock being someone else, worse than "Steven Gerrard isn't world class", worse than that fucking bellend pleadiing for everyone to leave Britney alone.

This right here is your nadir. You better continue to hope and fucking pray that he fucks up.
"Nadir"? Are you sure you want to go there?

Because - and please, feel free to call me old-fashioned - I'd say that calling the Williams Sisters "Gorillas in the Mist" while drunk, and then claim to not remember it, and then make a similarly ill-advised comment about Thierry Henry's lips, and then disappear for 6 months, would sail rather closer to the accepted and allowed definition of "nadir" than anything on this thread.

But maybe that's just me! Hahahaha! Who knows?

However I'll allow you, and other readers, to draw their own conclusions, but I'd humbly suggest you wind your fucking neck in, because - racist tomfoolery notwithstanding - when it comes to this kind of fucking pointless tete-a-tete, I'm far better equipped to come out on top, given that I am - at a very conservative estimate - about twice as good as you at everything.

So do yourself a fucking favour, and shut the fuck up.

hahaha how embarrassing is this little egotistical rant!

ha ha i hope so.

Did you see him? Giving it the big 'i am' passing it around the pitch to fellow team mates. Getting too big for his little boots he is!

He's been rubbish for a long time, but I guess he is only 23 still. Yesterday was arguably his best performance for us. Very solid, with intelligent and accurate passing. My stream wasn't great, so I kept seeing him do something good and saying: 'Is that Meireles? Oh no, wait, he's got hair. BLOND hair...'

Lucas was immense. If he can perform like this on a regular basis he can be a strong asset for the first XI..

Can't believe how young he is, and playing with Stevie and Raul can only help him develop.
I really dont care what anybody else thinks of me. I know my football and thats all that matters to me.
If lucas is playing shite i'll say so, If hes playing well i'll say so, likewise Alonso, Kuyt, Crouch, Pennant, Johnson and every other divisive player we ever had since forever. If we win 6 on the bounce i'll fancy us to win the league, if we lose 6 on the bounce i'll go apeshit and blame every cunt in the world. Football changes, results change, players change, everything changes and thats why my opinion does. Because lucas isnt *always* bad and because Kuyt isnt *always* great, so my opinion will change.
Like i said id far rather be seen as i am (flip flopping) than stick to my guns and not admit i was wrong. I dont care how often im right or wrong. I care about Liverpool winning football matches, and ultimately i dont care who is in or out of the team providing we do that. Im not going to change......that is not stop changing for as long as the game changes, form changes, luck changes etc.

One of the players who has had to cope with plenty of criticism over the past two years has been midfielder Lucas Leiva, who was derided on a regular basis during former manager Rafael Benitez's reign.

However, in the last four matches the Brazil international has put in arguably his best performances for the club with yesterday's display against Chelsea the best by far.

Hodgson praised the 23-year-old for the way he has handled the pressure and emerged a better player.

"Lucas has been strong mentally and he needs to be because he is a good footballer, like many of the other players who are getting stick or will get stick," added the Reds boss.

"We don't have that many bad players here but it is a big arena to play in and people expect a lot from players.

"Where Lucas has been strong is to put the criticism he has been receiving over the last couple of years behind him and get out and show he is a very good player.

"I've always believed in him and to be fair my predecessor never doubted him, playing him on a regular basis, so he didn't give the criticism any credence either."

I'd like him to name who he thinks our bad players are
I'm guessing Babel, Roy doesn't rate him at all thankfully.

excellent performance by Lucas yesterday!
how much will Roy change the team now if Kyriakos, Cole and Glenjo are back to fitness?

It's difficult to not like Lucas as a guy:

Anfield was amazing today, thanks all the Reds supporters. This victory will give the team a lot of confidence to keep going. Well done reds. I am going to sleep because I am really tired today, tomorrow we start to think in the next game. Good Night #happy.
Lucas Leiva

He was excellent yesterday. No question.

After his awful start with the club, it's hard not to laugh at the possibility of him having a long and productive career with us.

steady on there Ry, keep me and poor Dreamy out of your rows with Brenda

Lucas was aces though, also loved his crunching tackle to set Stevie through for his goal the other night in Europe, keep going Lucas

Hmmm. Im not getting carried away by a decent performance against a lightweight Chelsea central midfield missing it's two powerhouses.

I have to say i did love Lucas' tackle on Terry in the 2nd half when he was driving forward trying to get his team going.

I hope he can continue to improve. The same goes for the rest of the side.

His best match for LFC, no doubt about it. To say he was MOM is way exagerated though. Torres, Reina, Gerrard were the best.
I hope Roy plays the same team against Wigan. Gerrard in the middle behind 2 strikers changes everything.

This.

People try to be too clever when it comes to picking the man of the match. The 'look i can appreciate finer things' elitist syndrome.

Football is a simple game. There is no way i'd be willing to look past anyone other than Torres for man of the match.

The First goal was a great finish, and the second was a brilliant solo effort that gave us the cushion without which we would have panicked in the second half.

Id say its a chance for him to prove himself anyway. With Rafa in charge you always got the feeling that Lucas would play regardless of form just because of the formation we played and Rafas stubbornness.. At least hodgson has dropped him when he's been shit. But if he can repeat yesterdays performance on a more regular basis then regardless of peoples opinions, we gain in midfield. And it keeps poulsen off the pitch.

I read somewhere he ran 14km yesterday - that's some engine. It's good to see the lad finally show some end product for all his hard work.

On the other hand, has anyone seen this hyperbolic shambles?....guess what site I got it from?.....

*Fuckin love that play at 0:26. He actually fooled FOUR Chelsea players, with four touches of class.

He's probably thinking "Oh these guys look really desperate to win this ball back. Am I going to bottle it with shite first touch as many in this situation would do?

Nooo. I'm taking perfect first touch to see if Maxi is in position to receive the ball.

Aaah that right back reads the game well and covers Maxi quick enough, fair play to him. I've still managed to get into position for a safe clearance tho, rather than giving the ball away in dangerous position and make a headline. I'm still under such a huge pressure then if I was Carra I'd be praised for kicking the ball out of play now, so why not to just get rid of it? But Carra would lose it with his first touch so that's a moot point anyway. I wanna pass it to a red shirt and move 'cause that's what I do but god I'm trapped in here!

Ok then, I'm taking it back to Paul. He's used to hopeless clearances and that's probably the best option at the moment, and there is an odd chance that he brings Torres, the only available player bar Maxi atm into this move. Hah that lad with number 21 on his back clearly believes those myths about me only passing it backwards. So as Anelka, it seems.

Naaaaah. This guys play they cards right. They're just closing down the only option I have now - our new left back Paul Konchesky. And I have no time to think about what to do mind as I'm being closed down as Zidane in his prime ffs!

I'm sorry but it would be harsh to give the ball back to poor Paul. He's not making a move towards sideline (as I'd do if I was him) where is a little bit of space, so I can only pass it to his right foot, what might turn out to be a total disaster.

So I have to take it to that little bit of empty space myself with my 3rd touch, sending those three guys the wrong way, and I might have fooled that cheeky right back too after I changed direction again.

Oh yes I have. I'm taking 4th touch now. A "support" touch like. I see Maxi available asking for the ball already, but with this little touch I just wanna make sure that right defender doesn't anticipate my idea (if he did he would intercepted it). With this little touch, I see that defender isn't aware of maxi anymore, and with my top close control I can take a quick pass now.

Sure it's not gonna be a world class pass with my left foot, I'm so close to the sideline and still under big pressure as my marker is doing fucking great job, but I know that Maxi's control is actually world class. He'll probably manage it"

Think it was Carling talking about importance of 'knowing what to do with the ball before you actually get it' in Lucas threads. It's very important agreed, and sometimes Lucas looks like he's considering his options AFTER he receives pass. But sometimes you're under immense pressure, in dangerous area, with little or no time to think, and with NO options at all. There was no sensible option for Leiva when he got the ball, he had to create one himself.

What makes a difference between good and top player these days imo is how quickly can a player react to the changes on the pitch, rather than how many moves ahead he thinks (which is good and important too). This little play from Lucas shows how fast his mind is, and how he can synchronize it with his feet. Let alone his reaction, awareness, intelligence and vision with this play. What a player. Love him to bits
