I'm not sure that ever happens, does it? At least not to us anyway, any big signings we make are generally early in the window, or have been ongoing through the window. There hasn't been any credible links for anyone besides who we've bought or are about to buy for a while now.

I hope it's not, but I reckon we're about the end of our signings now, besides a full back and a few minor players.
 
Excellent, we were crying out for an organiser at the back last season - very pleased.

A full back next please Mr Rodgers.
 
whatever happens i'd like us to try and stick to a settled partnership this season . There was too much chopping and changing last season when they were all fit .
 
so what is that ? the best part of 50m we've spent on southampton players this summer . Surely they've got to throw in a bonus freebie at this stage .

He is great at the whole last ditch tackle aspect but I find him infuriating to watch. It wouldn't offend me to see him start but we need to build a partnership and I don't think Skrtel will have much more of a future here with two big signings now in the defence.

Skrtel only missed 2 league games last season. There won't be a dramatic shift from that unless his form crumbles, which is possible with him I suppose.

There's no real use for Agger at this football club. Announced as vice-captain at the start of last season and now completely disposable.
 
I thought lovren was left footed, but apparently he's right footed. Is that true? If so he's the perfect partner for sakho.

The Croatian defender is now heading to Merseyside for a medical on Saturday, and will also discuss personal terms with the club’s managing director Ian Ayre prior to signing.

There has been some discussion about flying the 25-year-old to the United States to join Liverpool’s summer tour but logistically that is proving difficult.

Brendan Rodgers’s side leave Boston on Saturday morning and will spend little more than 48 hours in their next destinations of Chicago, New York and Charlotte. Loic Remy’s medical in Boston took longer than anticipated as he needed escorting to different venues for tests which are normally straightforward at English clubs.

The capture of Lovren will thrill Rodgers, who made him his main defensive target this summer as he believes he possesses the leadership qualities that have been lacking in his back four since Jamie Carragher’s retirement.

Lovren made it known to Southampton he was desperate to move to Anfield and it has been a negotiating process ever since. Although Liverpool are making no comment, it is understood an initial fee of £16 million is to be paid to the St Mary’s club, with the rest increasing via various add-ons.

Both Remy and Belgium striker Divock Origi have completed their medicals during the club’s visit to Boston, with the French striker now enjoying the extra time off he is due having played in the World Cup.

Remy has gone to New York with his family and will rejoin his team mates later in the tour.

Lovren is the seventh Liverpool signing this summer taking the transfer spending to just below £100 million. Rodgers will now turn his attention to securing full-backs before the start of the season.[/article]
 
I think it needs to be Sakho-Lovren.

Skrtel didn't have a sustainable season last year. If a couple of his headers hit the bar instead of going in, and a few more of his last ditch clearances end up as OGs, we're harping a drastically different tune.

I know people hate getting into this can of worms of what ifs, but I don't think we can expect that goal tally from Skrtel again to offset the OGs he scores from his style of defending. I think he become third choice, with Kolo 4th choice, Agger sold, and Ilori on a 6 month loan. Coates loaned out as well.

We can reassess if we need to in January. Get rid of Kolo/extend Ilori's loan/whatever.
 
Reckon Lovren can speak French too, given his 3+ seasons with Lyon?

I really don't get the point: "What if a couple of his headers hit the bar instead".

What if Sturridge doesn't score as much as last year? What if Mignolet gets injured? What if Coutinho gets even more inconsistent?

We can do "what if's" about every player, it's not like he was banging them in at both ends every other season. I know he is rash in the way he plays, but our system leaves us open to mistakes because we leave ourselves so exposed - they all fucked up last year, look at Agger the other night, look at Toure, look at Johnson, look at Sakho. None of them look consistent, but then the defensive system hasn't looked convincing for two seasons.

Sakho had alot of money invested in him, he's done ok and has time to adjust, but I remain unconvinced about whether he's going to be good enough, he's as rash as Skrtel can be at times, so all this "Lovren-Sakho the dream partnership" crap is just theoretical really, until they actually play together no one knows whether they will forge a formidable partnership, or be an even worse combination than the latest one.
 
I thought Robben broke some sort of sprinting record at the WC and yet Ron Vlaar is way ahead of him at #4?

All of those are possibilities. The reality is though that Skrtel scoring fewer goals is almost a nailed on guarantee this season, and infinitely more likely than anything you said. And if Skrtel didn't score as many goals as he did, then he would've been deemed third choice by default. And if Sakho had scored a few of the sitters he'd missed, then he'd be nailed on as the next great thing.

The reality though is that I judge my defenders by their defending. Set piece ability is a bonus, but I'd rather my defenders be able to defend them than score off them. Skrtel also has a tendency to "pass the buck", in that he always plays the ball to his teammates, regardless of if they're in a tight spot. It makes him look better in possession than he really is, and in turn makes his keeper and fellow defenders look worse.

Sakho is better than Skrtel, but people love the sexy blocks and goals Skrtel scores, so he'll likely start next season. It also doesn't help that Skrtel is going to get whistled more this season for his "man marking", which is basically just holding on for dear life to the opponent. It seems almost certain that this will be a point of refereeing emphasis this season.

I understand that defenders are a position which is very prone to mistakes, but Skrtel actively makes his odds of a fatal error much higher with his style of play. Sakho dived into a few stupid tackles and gets absolutely crucified for it. Toure slices one clearance as an OG and makes one error at the back, and is a heart attack waiting to happen. But Skrtel gets an absurd amount of slack because he scored some goals last season, it's selective memory at its best.

I knew somebody would make this stupid post roping all hypotheticals together.
