Loan watch

Shame we couldn't have sent him to Derby or a club higher in the table. Not sure if a club like Wigan that is struggling in the relegation zone would be a good destination as the manager could opt for familiarity / experience and stick with senior players rather than give young loan players a chance.

Liverpool Under-21s boss Michael Beale told the ECHO earlier this week that Ojo had attracted interest from a number of clubs throughout the Football League.
“There’s a lot of interest around him in terms of a loan,” he said.
“We’ve got to make sure it’s the right thing for Sheyi and if he goes out that he’s going to play and if he’s not going to play, he’s got to get access - like Conor Randall at Shrewsbury - to come back and play for us.”

I like that arrangement they've put in.

The people who do youtube clips / highlights of our players are an amazing bunch. What? You want highlights of player X, Y or Z in an obscure game? Yeah, sure:

Ojo's debut for Wigan vs Bournemouth:

Ilori vs PSG, a couple of weeks ago (cup game). He seems to have had an injury-disrupted season, but has started 3 of their last 4 games. If we stick to playing three at the back next season, I think it'd be great if he could do well enough in the pre-season to earn a starting spot as the right CB. That would then free up Can to play in CM and advance to the next stage of his quest for world domination.

He still looks classy to me, a real prospect - and tailor made for the right of a back 3.

Ojo getting rave reviews for Wigan - their man of the match again tonight, albeit in a 3-0 defeat to Charlton.

Very encouraging for a guy who doesn't turn 18 until June.

Great news. I assume one person is responsible for Ojo, Ibe and Sterling coming to LFC, if so who? Big thanks to them.

More than anyone I believe that was Frank McParland, who was in charge of youth development at the time. Those 3 signings all happened within about 18 months of each other, along with Jerome Sinclair. Although it's been said since that the club still looks to sign outstanding talent, I wonder if it's really true. It might be that players of that calibre simply haven't become available in the years since - I couldn't tell you who the other big clubs have recruited. And we have signed Herbie Kane and Yan Dhanda in the last couple of years, both pretty promising in their own right.

But I still get the impression that we've shifted focus a bit away from just buying talent in and towards producing our own. And as nice as that sounds, when the alternative is getting Sterling, Ibe, and Ojo for a combined £7-8m, then that has to be our priority - especially given the examples of successful development we're able to sell to potential new recruits.

Liverpool loanee Joao Carlos Teixeira scored two goals on Saturday afternoon to help inspire Brighton & Hove Albion to a 4-3 victory over Birmingham City in their Championship clash at the Amex Stadium.

The Portuguese midfielder, who joined the Seagulls at the start of the current campaign on a temporary switch, helped Chris Hughton's side clinch their first victory in six matches as he chipped in with a brace. Inigo Calderon grabbed the other two goals as Brighton climbed above Rotherham United into 20th place in the standings, and in doing so, placed a three-point cushion between themselves and the relegation zone.

Teixeira struck the first goal of what would develop into a frenetic game of football when he cut in from the left and fired a low, right-footed shot under the body of Birmingham goalkeeper Darren Randolph. Clayton Donaldson equalised for the visitors soon after and, just prior to the interval, Birmingham spurned a glorious opportunity to take the lead when Paul Caddis saw his penalty saved by Robbie Stockdale. Calderon made the visitors pay for their miss within five minutes of the restart as he restored Brighton's lead, before Teixeira struck again, this time from close range, to make it 3-1.

I like Teixeira. He's quite lightweight, but he's so comfortable on the ball, got a good eye for a pass, and always seems to be involved in dangerous moments in the opposition's final third. He probably wouldn't displace Coutinho from the starting XI if we had him back from Brighton, but I think he could be one of those players who'll impress when playing with better players and having all that movement ahead of him.

This lad looks so promising. Strength, pace, pose and seems to have a lot of time on the ball.

On a side note, it's always interesting to note how left footers always come across more elegant.

His acceleration for a relatively big lad is unreal, he just steps into top gear as calm as you like. He could probably play any position in the front 6 or 7, but I think I'd try to develop him as an attacking CM, somewhere he can really use his physicality and drive.

Speaking of our youngsters out on loan, one lad whom I really would like to see get to go out for a season-long loan next season (preferably to Derby again) is Ryan Kent. Judging by the names that are most often brought up here when folks are curious about their progress / chances (Ojo, Canos, Sinclair, Wilson, Rossiter, McLaughlin, Yesil, and to a lesser extent, Brannagan and Phillips), I've to say he's probably the most underrated of our fine group of young attacking players.

I rate him a lot - he's pacy, strong, very direct, skilful, has good ball control, and finishes pretty well. The Wilson + Kent combo was often a great pairing for us in the U18s. I wonder if he'd have attracted interest from a Championship side to take him on loan in January (like Ojo) had he not been injured.

I certainly think he's ready to step up a level and get some senior minutes on loan in the Championship next season. Or maybe he'll be next, together with Ojo, to go through our wingback school of progression.

Not the best highlight reel available (see, I told you he was underrated), but for those who're unfamiliar with the name:

edit: Ouch... that tackle by the youngster in the mini-derby.

And back on Teixeira... this is the match report on Leeds' web site. I took this report off the opponents' page as you'd expect them to downplay or at the very least, not exaggerate, the influence of an opposing player, hence giving you a more conservative view of his performance. Notice the number of mentions he gets in the report. I really hope LFCTikiTaka / MrBoyWunder / LFCMostar gets their hands on a video of the game and does one of their player X vs club clips so we can see what he actually did.

BRIGHTON HALT UNITED RUN

United suffer 2-0 defeat at the Amex Stadium...
Published 24 February 2015 at 06:00

BRIGHTON 2 (Baldock 26, Calderon 63), UNITED 0.

Brighton: Stockdale, Bruno, Greer, Dunk, Bennett, Ince, Kayal (Stephens 73), Teixeira, Calderon, Mackail-Smith (O'Grady 81), Baldock (LuaLua 75). Subs. Walton, Hughes, Ledesma, Best.

United: Silvestri, Wootton, Cooper, Bamba, C Taylor, Austin, Cook, Murphy, Mowatt (Doukara 73), Sloth (Antenucci 59), Morison (Cani 49). Subs. S Taylor, Berardi, Del Fabro, Sharp.

Referee: F Graham

Booked: Kayal, LuaLua (Brighton), Austin (United)

Att: 25,274 (1,815 United)

The midweek trip to Brighton's Amex Stadium saw United head coach Neil Redfearn make two changes from the previous weekend's win over league leaders Middlesbrough as captain Liam Cooper returned to defence in place of Giuseppe Bellusci, who served the first of his two-match suspension, while Casper Sloth came in for the injured Sam Byram.

It was a somewhat patchy start at the Amex as both sides vied for possession inside the early stages until Rodolph Austin has the first sight of goal on 10 minutes, lashing wide of David Stockdale’s left-hand post after being invited to let fly from range.

Luke Murphy then saw his long-distance effort deflected narrowly wide before the hosts had the clearest chance of the opening exchanges as Joao Teixeira glanced Craig Mackail-Smith’s left-wing cross inches away from Marco Silvestri’s far post with the United goalkeeper scrambling across his line.

A cagey period followed, with no real chances for either side, until the hosts broke the deadlock on 26 minutes through Sam Baldock. Mackail-Smith broke free down Brighton’s right and delivered a low cross for Baldock to calmly convert from inside the six-yard box.

And their lead could have been doubled moments later as Teixeira stole the ball in midfield and strode forward before slotting Mackail-Smith through on goal, only for the Seagulls forward to be denied by the legs of Silvestri at his near post.

Teixeira had pulled the strings for Brighton in August’s reverse fixture at Elland Road, and the Liverpool loanee was at the heart of most of the hosts’ first-half advances. The youngster was inches away from adding to the scoreline just before the break as he cut inside before curling just over Silvestri’s bar and into the stand housing the travelling United supporters.

United looked to make a strong end to the opening 45 minutes, but Sol Bamba was just unable to connect with Murphy’s cross from the left as Brighton took the one-goal lead into half-time.

The teams re-emerged from the break unchanged but United were forced into the game’s first substitution just four minutes into the second half as Steve Morison pulled up injured and was subsequently replaced by on-loan Albanian striker Edgar Cani.

But it was the hosts who continued to press as Inigo Calderon fizzed a strike across the face of Silvestri’s goal and a heroic last-ditch tackle from Scott Wootton stole the ball from Teixeira’s toes. Alex Mowatt’s free-kick sailed over at the opposite end, while Silvestri clutched Teixeira’s low strike as things started to open up.

Teixeira then fired into Silvestri’s arms again on the hour mark, but Brighton’s lead was soon doubled somewhat fortuitously via Calderon. After turning inside the area, Beram Kayal saw his strike pushed out by Silvestri but only as far as the unassuming Calderon, with the ball cannoning against the Spaniard’s body and into the back of the net on 63 minutes.

United looked to mount a response and Bamba powered a header wide from a Murphy corner while Cani was just unable to meet a back-post cross with the desired connection as Redfearn urged his men forward. The head coach had introduced Mirco Antenucci and Souleymane Doukara in attack, and the pair soon combined to craft United’s clearest opening on 77 minutes.

Antenucci was sent hurtling through on goal after a long ball over the top and the Italian striker opted to selflessly tee up the arriving Doukara with a smart backheel inside the area, only for Stockdale to thwart his low effort with a near-post block.

Brighton probed for a third at the opposite end and Silvestri pulled off a stunning double save with two minutes remaining on the clock, tipping Dale Stephens’ header onto the bar before scrambling Chris O’Grady’s rebound off the line with his legs, while Man of the Match Teixeira clipped the post in stoppage time after racing through on goal.

And that proved to be the final piece of meaningful goalmouth action as Brighton brought United’s three-game winning run to a halt, inflicting only a second Championship defeat of 2015 upon Redfearn’s side.

Ilori vs St Etienne (this is the second league encounter between the two; he'd scored in the 1-1 draw in their first league game this season)

Still unclear to me what to expect from him. If we stick to three at the back next season, then ideally, one of Ilori or Wisdom can step up to challenge Lovren as the starter at RCB, or at the very least, be the backup for either of the side CB spots. We'll then have the following, with Can freed up to move into midfield:

RCB: Lovren, Ilori / Wisdom
CCB: Skrtel, Lovren
LCB: Sakho, Ilori / Wisdom

This assumes Lovren can recover from his stupor and find his form next season to claim the starting RCB place.

I think the chances are, one of Ilori or Wisdom will stay while the other is sold or loaned out again, as we don't carry 5 CBs in a matchday squad, and both youngsters need minutes to progress while we'll resist changing our backline too often. With Can able to drop into one of the CB spots in the event of an injury, this means the 3 CB spots can effectively be covered with 4 CBs and a utility player (and whichever youngsters are available, if needed, in an emergency situation - e.g. Williams and Jones).

I have doubts over Wisdom's ability to pass the ball under pressure – that seems to be one of the key requirements for the corner CB positions in this system and that's where he is probably behind the competition. On the plus side, he did earn Rodgers' trust very early, so he still might be given a chance to show what he can do.
