Lovely to see Sami at the end. But I wouldn't moan about Rafa at all about this. Bob Paisley never staged any final appearances. Kenny never went out of his way to bring on a player, as far as I can recall. The 'Liverpool Way' didn't used to encompass such acts of sentimentality. In fact, right back to Shanks' days, it could be a damned hardhearted place.

Unfortunately Macca, facts don't count for much when discussing Rafa on here sometimes.

Or maybe some of us have a different view on certain things...

Of course some of the criticism of our Manager this season has been fully justified mate (no doubts about it). But Rafa getting slated by some posters over the Sami thing today, is just plain ludicrous IMO.

Why?

The game meant nothing in terms of European qualification. And it's not like it would have been a risk... This man was masterful at old trafford a few weeks back.

He had the chance to pay tribute to a legend by allowing him to lead the team out one last time, and simply chose not to do so.

Good or bad?
Good because we finished 2nd and are closer to the winners than ever before.

I haven't seen it yet, but it sounds like Sami got a wonderful send off today (from what I've read on here anyway). As a fan i had no problem with when Sami came on, as long as he did.

Rafa has to think of our team first and foremost, and 2nd place was still there to be won. You might want to focus on a player leaving, but you still have to bare in mind the players that are still going to be with us next season.

The few posters taking this opportunity to have major digs at Rafa over this, are out of order IMO.

I'd agree with you if it was Ryan Babel leaving. He'd make the side weaker by starting.

But it was Sami. So he wouldn't have.

So he should have started.

Rafa's earned the critisism he's receiving here, imho.

Fair enough mate. We'll have to agree to disagree on this.

Has Sami actually signed his contract for Leverkusen yet?

If he had got injured today, would that have scuppered his transfer?

Anyways, I couldn't give a fuck.

YNWA Sami.

RAFA'S TRIBUTE TO 'IDOL' SAMI
Jimmy Rice at Anfield 24 May 2009
Rafa Benitez claimed Liverpool were losing an 'idol' after Sami Hyypia's tearful goodbye in front of the Kop.
The 35-year-old came on wearing the captain's armband for his final five minutes at Anfield as the Reds secured second place with a 3-1 victory over Spurs.

Hyypia then broke down before being held aloft by his teammates as the Kop sang his name.

"I am really pleased for him but a little bit sad because we're losing a fantastic professional, a good player and a good person too," said Benitez.

"I told him before the game I wanted to wait until the last minute, but the fans were pushing. At the end it was better (that he came on earlier than the last minute) because he almost scored.

"I was thinking about him coming on in the last minute and all the fans applauding him until the end.

"It has been 10 years and he's an idol here with the fans. Everyone loves him because he's been so good."

Also:

"Working with Sami Hyypia for five years I know he is a fantastic professional and hopefully he will do the same in Germany and then come back to us. Clearly he will have a position with us in two or three years if we're still here."

Perhaps he's an amateur atronomer in his spare time and has discovered a gigantic asteroid hurtling through the cold blackness of space, and on course to crash into Earth in a planet-killing event in about three years

'If we're still here'. What does that mean?
we're = Rafa and his coaching staff, I would assume
No he actually played for them for a few years previously so had scored for them before today
