Liverpool v Newcastle Match Thread

Got a ticket last minute and went to this today. The atmosphere was great, especially when the Kop realised City had gone behind. The ground just erupted into song, I shit myself and didn't know what to do except join in. We were also trying to drown out the Geordies, who to their credit, sang (largely incomprehensibly) for 90 minutes. The Van Dijk song getting multiple airings and the reception for Benitez were other personal highlights. Plus, when you see Dejan Lovren lash a volley into the top bin live in the flesh, you know the omens are going to be good. Good day.

Woooo! We look so composed and our ability to beat teams to park the bus is quality now without ever looking truly threatened when we over commit players. Two huge games. Imagine if we win both. Scenes!

I said last week I had a dream we beat them to go 10 pts clear of them. I didn’t realise Spurs would ruin the party

Fuck the scared ones and just relish the moment. It is ours so lets be greedy and make it a double 😛

Exactly - we need to make some new signings over the January break. A Striker, an Attacking Midfielder, a Defender. I would prefer someone with an injury record after say 6 continuous games - as we need to rotate the squad and keep everyone happy. Max price for all three 75M.

Trivial thing, I know, but that's sort of the point: I was really surprised Rafa, of all people, sat back and let his team insist on making us attack the Kop in the first half. That gimmick always looks embarrassingly small-time, and it nearly always backfires. I guess they could have just decided to do it on a whim, but if so Rafa must have been pretty uncomfortable watching it. Why do some teams really think it's a clever idea? THEY end up playing the second half without the support of THEIR fans, while we still feel comfortably at home, and the Annie Road end still has enough noise for us to still be encouraging. It just makes no sense. It's real Dr Evil stuff.

One of the best days I can remember in a long time.

A few weeks ago City were 5 points clear.

We were 1-0 down away to Burnley and the title dream was fading away.

Fast forward to now and we are 7 pts ahead and Spurs 6 pts back.

The reality check being that it shows how quickly it can change when you wobble.

Nothing won yet and Spurs could be top by the 4th but fuck me today was a good day

For spurs to be top by the 4th we would have to lose to Arsenal and City and for them to win both their games with a 12 goal swing.

They scored 11 in 2, and if were to lose 1-0 to Arenal could effect confidence and we could lose by a couple vs City.

It’s worst case but this season has been bonkers.

On the flip side we haven’t conceded 2 in the league in an age so when we go 2-0 it’s good night Irene.

Imagine Wolves cause a surprise then we win back to back.

9 points would be hard to overturn

You went to the match ? The most negative poster on 6CM ? What fucking magic enabled us to win that one then !?!?

*swoons*

What's all this talk about Salah diving in the press today?
Dummett pulled his arm back without even challenging for the ball, which made Salah lose his balance, disrupting his run towards goal. It's an obvious pen.

On MOTD they were talking about football not being a contact sport any more, I'm like "wtf are they talking about?"

True. It is rubbish talk. Pulling his arm is not about a contact sport. If he tackled him fair and square you could discuss contact sport.

Yep, I think people are calling it a dive because Salah went down instead of stumbling on.

You can find a cloud for every silver lining

Just Everton fans being Everton fans. They win scoring six, and they're talking about Salah winning a penalty, small time. It's a non issue anyway.

Hackett and Halsey trying to get some media attention by claiming he should have been banned.
There was contact and it was a penalty. Good to see Dermot Gallagher confirm that for Ref’s watch.

Milner was probably on the pitch that time, so he would have lost the chance to score himself if he went down.

He looked weak as piss to me

Oh give over. The number of times he's shaken defenders off to score before now is way past counting. He made the most of the foul to ensure the referee saw it.

I don’t disagree but this one in isolation looked incredibly soft to me and I can see why the media thought it was weak and rival fans jumped on it.

Who cares he got it, he scored it and we won.

We’ve had loads not given at home in the last 12 months.

It was almost a carbon-copy of the one given on Lovren against Everton last season, was it not? Then the pundit consensus was that if Lovren extended his arms to hold him, it was enough for a penalty, even if it was not by itself enough to bring a player (was it Calvert-Lewin?) down. Klopp’s response was “now I know that’s a foul in England.” Now that the shoe is on the other foot, suddenly it’s no foul?

If we were 3rd and no threat to anyone, no one would give a shit

We're top and they hate it

Good, I want to go back to being the most hated team in England. All this lovey dovey shit is doing my head in.
I'm fine with neutrals and fans of lower league teams loving us, it's the cesspool of salt and bile from City, United, Spurs, Chelsea, Arsenal and Everton fans that I absolutely adore, as soon as we start playing well they become obsessed, even ahead of their own teams, it's lovely.
