[article=http://www.express.co.uk/sport/football/587586/Liverpool-Lazar-Markovic-Benfica-Nathaniel-Clyne-Gonzalo-Higuain-Transfer-Gossip]The versatile midfielder joined the Reds last summer from the Portuguese champions for £20million, but has failed to make an impact at Anfield.

Markovic managed just 19 Premier League appearances, scoring twice, and his position in Brendan Rodgers' squad is in doubt following the arrivals of Roberto Firmino and James Milner.

Benfica are believed to be interested in re-signing the 21-year-old, and Italian media outlet Tuttomercatoweb claims that Markovic also wants to make the transfer happen.

The Serbia international isn't the only Reds player looking for an exit, with Raheem Sterling likely to leave after rejecting a new contract.

Lazar Markovic has been linked with a move back to Benfica
However, a deal for Southampton's Nathaniel Clyne is set to be wrapped up after the right-back underwent a medical earlier today.

Rodgers is also said to be looking for a striker, with Gonzalo Higuain on his radar after the Argentine told Napoli he wants to leave for Merseyside.[/article]

Maybe a loan, but no way can I see him being sold off. I'd keep him and play him in his proper position instead of fucking wingback.

If he's not going to be used (hard to see that he will be) then a loan is the best option.

Then reassess next summer - if he does well then most of the fee could be recovered. Or we might actually choose to play him.

I have to say, he's been extremely uninspiring, despite a few decent performances here and there. Either he doesn't have the quality or he doesn't have the self belief to express it. Before he arrived I thought his youtube made him look like an overpriced kick and run merchant, and I'm sorry to say he did little last year to dispel that idea.

Yeah, let's loan our 20m winger to Bournemouth

They wouldn't be able to afford him!

I'm not so sure about that. I think his age and cultured style mean he needs to be in a reasonably dominant team, not one scrapping (as even attractive promoted teams end up doing) for their lives.

I think Valencia were mentioned previously. Someone of that level in any of the decent European leagues would be ok, IMO.

I agree to a point. I think we expected a winger who could beat his man one-on-one and he was not that. But, he made a few sublime passes and was superb striker of the ball when shooting (but far too rare). He will need to improve his one-on-one skills if played wide, but it seems he is more comfortable making a pass than dribbling and he has had little opportunity to show this side of his game.

A loan to the right team could be positive for all. Maybe recall option in January?

I knew this was coming but it makes me sad, an absolutely fantastic player in there.

Spain woul dbe the best destination for him loan-wise.

Cluster fuck of a signing if he ends up going this summer.

Because he is most likely to shine and generate a sale?
Or most likely to improve to benefit us when he returns?

I think sending him to Spain would be giving up on him and it is too early for that.

His best moments have been in the middle of the park. I guess his pace meant he got shifted to the wing in his early years, but he lacks the ability to beat a man one on one, so I think he'll struggle there - certainly in the PL, against quick full backs.

I thought since seeing him at Benfica that he could be turned into a good all round CM, with a slant on attacking. We were playing the diamond at the time, and he seemed a good fit for one of the 'side' positions, because he drove so quickly through central areas with his close control, usually followed by an incisive pass.

One thing that's given me pause about him, generally, though, is his size. He's got the dimensions of an athletic 6 footer - it was only when I realised he's 5'9 that not only is he not tall, but very skinny too. So I do wonder if that's going to be too much of a problem for him in the PL.

Hes a complete fanny, its not going to happen for him with us. He needs a club where hes by far the best player thats going to endlessly indulge him to turn him into a decent player, we are not that club

He's not a 'fanny', he's shown fighting spirit and aggression on numerous occasions that I've seen him. He just looks like that so it's a lazy jibe to make. His problem is he's small and early on was clearly completely bamboozled by the pace of the league.

I think the 'kick and run merchant' criticism is just stupid, really. He's not very good one on one - he lacks a trick - so clearly when taking a man on his best hope is to outpace him. But 'kick and run' suggests a lack of technique, a Djibril Cisse type of player. He's not that at all. His technical ability and close control is excellent, it's just a matter of whether we can best unlock it.

Sending Lazar back to Benfica on loan would be ridiculous. He has already proved he can dominate that league. He earned his move to a bigger club. We give him a season out of position and then look to loan him back to where he came from? That is madness. What will we learn?

Loaning him out or giving up on him would be insanely stupid.
There is a great talent and a fantastic prospect there.

Difficult first year but we knew it could be.
Rodgers hasnt helped him at all. Playing him out of position and dropping him when he hit some form.

Easy to forget that a lot of our good performances came with him as a wing back.

Kick and run is a lazy description. He's one of our better players in posession imho.
Very clever player that would thrive in the middle. Deserves a chance.

The big question here is why did we buy him AND Lallana.

Hmmm I'm deffo not giving up on him. He's been played sporadically and often out of position. Loan? Get to fuck! Watch last seasons game against Sunderland. The boy has talent - A second season will do him wonders. Although I agree about why by BOTH Markovic and Lallana?

I think we need to give him this season at least. He's young so has plenty of time yet, and most foreign players need a minimum of a season to adapt. We just need to give him the chance to develop.

Look at De Bruyne, who left Chelsea and is now shit hot property. Wouldn't surprise me if same happened with Markovic if we got rid.

For all that Chelsea have done good business recently, what a fuck up losing players like De Bruyne and Sturridge, and £20m on Matic.

That's the beauty of being successful - you can get away with it. Sadly, we've not got that luxury.

I don't know whether he'll be fantastic in the end but loaning him out is pointless unless we've already decided he's not going to be good enough for the Premiership - which seems premature at best.

For those that rate him and think he will be a good player for us. Where do you think he should play and in what formation. Is he going to get games as an attacking mid ahead of Coutinho Firmino and Lallana? Probably not.

There are clearly some concerns about his work ethic and stamina. I think to make it with us he would have to up his game by about 25% and I don't think hes capable of that. It wasnt the physicality of the league that intimidated him when he started with us, it was how much higher the standard was.

He should be starting Europa League and most cup games behind the strikers.
