If we sign Darren Bent

Status

Look at all that money we've spent,
On buying the average Darren Bent,
Reasons couldn't be clearer,
No Englishman available for dearer,
To Bolton, he should have been sent.

Ha.

We're just shit scared to buy decent foreign players because Real or Barca will end up poaching them, so we've decided to buy average players because nobody better will ever want them. Gua is doing us proud.

Page 6 of thread.
The page where people start to list the positives of the player.
I've been listing positives since page 1 lad

Plus, defoe: the definition if a purple patch player

I don't know if Bent or Defoe would be the answer. What I do know is that we need another option up front. We have gotten into a rut and need a change. Even one of the reserves stepping up up into the squad as an impact player would be better than the status quo.

If Bent is that good then how come at nearly 28 he's played so few games for England?
Nobody is saying Bent is amazing, but even if they were, that's a pretty awful point.
Not really considering my point was that it could easily be argued that he hasn't played much for England due to him simply not being good enough.

And i think you'll find that a number of posters on here rate him very highly.

From BBC Gossip Column

Aston Villa have said that striker Darren Bent is not for sale at any
price, despite continued interest from Liverpool.

However, Villa could make a move for Chelsea forward Didier Drogba as
they prepare to receive January bids for Bent.

Liverpool have joined Paris St Germain and Marseille in the hunt for
Sunderland midfielder Stephane Sessegnon, amid reports that the
27-year-old is unsettled in the North East.

Liverpool may enter the race to sign FC Twente's highly rated
21-year-old striker Luuk De Jong but will face hefty competition from
Tottenham and Chelsea.

Mate, it's shit. No end of hopeless footballers have chalked up a few caps for England over the years. We have some of them in our team already. It means nothing.

And I've not seen one person who is actually advocating Bent to come here.

The Midlands club have expressed an interest in swooping for the Chelsea veteran, who turns 34 in March.

Drogba is out of contract in the summer and talks over an extension at Stamford Bridge have reached a stalemate, with the Londoners unwilling to exceed the one-year deal currently on the table.

However, Villa have indicated they would be willing to give Drogba the two-year contract that he wants from Chelsea.

Although Villa manager Alex McLeish has admitted he has limited funds to spend in this month’s transfer window, the sale of club-record signing Bent would free up the cash to match Drogba’s current salary of around £120,000-a-week.

Goal.com understands that Villa are expecting a fight this month to hold on to Bent, who is attracting strongly rumoured interest from Liverpool.

The Reds' director of football Damien Comolli is a big admirer of Bent and was influential in taking the player to Tottenham from Charlton Athletic in 2007 when the Frenchman was at White Hart Lane.

Although Villa stress their prize asset is not for sale at any price, one source with knowledge of the situation said: “Villa are steeling themselves for bids for Bent this month. They are preparing for life without him and are seriously considering Drogba as a replacement.”

McLeish is believed to have an uneasy relationship with Bent, despite the striker’s record of a goal every other game since his surprise move from Sunderland 12 months ago.

The 27-year-old has scored a relatively meagre six Premier League goals this season but is gradually establishing himself at international level and is expected to be part of England’s Euro 2012 squad this summer.

Villa paid £18 million rising to £24m for Bent and have privately indicated that they will need to recoup that outlay to justify his sale to their supporters, who watched Stewart Downing and Ashley Young be sold last summer.

Potential replacements with proven Premier League pedigree are thin on the ground but Villa are closely monitoring Drogba’s contract situation.

The Ivory Coast international is currently assessing his options, with strong interest in him from suitors including cash-rich Chinese and Russian clubs, the MLS and Serie A.

He will be available for free in the summer and it is unlikely that Chelsea will ask for more than £3m this month for the player they brought to England from Marseille in 2004.

I actually said that there are a number of posters on here who rate him highly (and there are).

Tbh i stand by my point mate, if he was as good as some people think he'd have more England caps. It's obviously not the sole indicator whilst judging his ability, but it's a decent one nonetheless imo.

Hes quite good but much like most of our side he is a bit wasteful in front of goal.

It's not like that though, cos you know there's money.

It's like you're a schizo, and turn when you enter the shop. You go in for some heinz beans, some pasta, some nice veg and a bottle of pinot; you walk out with a 50 quid bottle of caviar flavoured piss, some pokemon cards and a Natalie Portman sex doll.

I'll never understand people

Darren bent is a good goalscorer

And you know what? I wish we'd play counter attacking football so we wouldn't be so fucking ponderous with the ball
You were also dead happy with Downing.

Maybe there is a trend emerging here.

Bent is the missing piece of the jig-saw.

Maybe.

I prefer counter attacking football, only the best defences in the world can pull it off and I think we can play it. We're too hesitant and that could only improve us.

Presently I'm not sold that we have a style if play

We're like arsenal when they tried too hard, only without as much class

It's more like someone with little in the bank but insist to go to a fancy supermarket which charge 100% premium on any food they sell. For the same money he could buy much better quality of food at the next store but he refused. Then his kid argue that at least we have food now instead of empty fridge at home. But they forget every penny they waste on the fancy supermarket would also affect how they live for the rest of the month.

We would have a front two for £51m! Not bad...except it's Carroll and Bent. Holy Comolli.
