If we sign Darren Bent

I know quite a few spurs and sunderland supporters and they all say the same thing. If you stick it on a plate for him, he'll finish. He won't create anything and he won't work for the team.

I think that's pretty accurate.

Do we need anyone to create anything or work for the team though?

We need someone who knows that hitting the woodwork is unsatisfactory and we need to put the ball several inches inside the woodwork.

I want to see Bent's woodwork stats.

I don't know how the hell he'll do. I though Carroll would be ace. My opinion is worth nothing.

I'm trying to take a positive view.

He averages a goal every other game for almost every club he played for, except Ipswich during his early days and Tottenham.

Even for the failed stint at White Hart Lane, he was top league scorer in the league and for the club in season 08/09 with 12 and 17 goals respectively.

The names of Barrios and Lewandowski doesn't fill me with confidence - not saying they won't do well but compared to the stature of say Suarez was with Ajax, the duo are part of a raising Dortmund team, not exactly in the established star mould, at least not at the moment in my opinion.

I'm starting to be detached from figures and fees quoted/mentioned. The market has seldom been sane, clubs take advantage of buying club's need/desperation to strengthen a certain person, and most importantly, whats 10m-15m above valuation when we've blown 55m on 2 players? Not to say I condone such waste/non-nonsensical spending but one would like to think the likes of Ian Ayre knows where the club's financial standing is.

I'm not an advocator for EPL-proven either but how any signing now should be geared towards making an immediate impact for a surge towards CL qualification. Otherwise we might as well use the remaining of the season to 'bed' the signings in with a string of regular starts. Can't ignore the fact that having experience in the league does help - e.g. Enrique vs. Taiwo/Cissokho/Pereira etc. - surely the Championship experience helped.

There's the Euros too. Those established at their current club are unlikely to leave. Like Podolski mentioned, there's no need to jeopardize by moving to a new team/league. Besides they would've come so far probably because of their current club - so there's the sentimental part. Or for example in Valencia - Soldado's case, neither party have a strong case to sell/leave and at the moment are well-matched for each other.

Then there's also our current situation. Any signing coming in knows we're in the fight for CL qualification, with no guarantees that we'll make it. It could be a CL-less season next campaign. Might sound silly but its similar predicament that players joining clubs fighting against relegation face. Continue to excel and I might get a move to a big club next summer. Is the move worth the 'risks' involved?

Just want to reiterate I'm not advocating for Bent's signing, nor am I overly impressed with the rumour and link, less so by the price tag, but there are factors to consider

Where are the bold bits !!!!

Carroll and bent upfront..............

I'd rather we resigned Fowler again

Haven't time to read through this or other threads, are we actually signing him?

You think Bent is a bad rumour?

I think I'd prefer if we took him on loan for a couple of months rather than spent 20m on bent.
I honestly would rather we blew £20million on Bent.

I hated it when we signed him first time round, and said it would be a mistake, as I did with Carroll too for that matter. Someone better be polishing that Blue Peter badge for me sometime soon

we probably have to get used to the fact that the club don't want all those talented foreigners who'll end up leaving for bigger clubs. they want a team that will stay together.

This is how it feels to be Tottenham
This is how it feels to be small
This is how it feels when your scouts
Don't watch football at all.

Repost before heading to bed. z_z

The Aston Villa striker has scored against every current Premier League team except Swansea and QPR and stands on 97 goals from 222 games.

His goals-per-game ratio is up there with the likes of Michael Owen, Wayne Rooney and Robbie Fowler, too. He is ninth on 0.44.

Bent’s best season was his first at Sunderland in 2009-10 with 24 goals from 38 games, accounting for 50 per cent of their goals that season.

His record is not in doubt. The general consensus seems to be that opposing teams play differently against Liverpool compared to the teams for which Bent has scored his goals therefore he may struggle to continue his 1 in 2 strike rate at Anfield.
This is the most important point regarding Bent.

It's also one that applies to Downing. He's previously played in teams that play on the counter attack against stretched defenses.

In hindsight, it's no massive shock to see him struggling for us in very different circumstances.

Cant see us signing him for the silly money Villa want anyway
Ha, yeah we're known for walking away from deals when clubs are asking for too much money

I don't think we'll sign Bent. Latest twatter rumours are all about Luuk de Jong

His goals to games ratio in the dutch league is around 1 in 2. Less than both Kuyt and Suarez while they were there. Just saying 8)

So was Van Persies. In fact nearly 1 in 4

I think De Jong is more of a one of three behind the striker player rather than an out and out goalscorer.

From what I can see the only out and out strikers that we have been linked with is Barrios from Dortmund and Bent 🙁

Carroll it is then. :🙂
