Henderson v Gerrard

It's funny cos this thread made me remember something very trivial. Steven Gerrard was voted second, only behind none other than King Kenny in the '100 players that shook the Kop' in 2008 and came first in 2013. Both polls were voted by fans and ex-players.

Anyway.....#justsayin #nobiggie

Current (at the time) best player beats legendary players on online vote SHOCKA

Well done for finding the exception.

He was lazy as fuck when it came to making himself available for the ball from teammates, for years.

Yes, that isolated example, apart from when he spent large parts of a season at right back too playing exceptionally well, or when he he was winning ball after ball in midfield, or when he played left back for us with 10 men at Villa and was the best player on the pitch, or when he ran a derby game at Anfield from right back. Or when he castrated Kevin Campbell.

As the seasons wore on and he played a more advanced role it was something that was diluted from his game and then when age started to go against him too, but for the first several years of his career, he was a great defender when he needed to be.

People's defence of Gerrard criticism over the years has often been along the lines of "he's our captain, show some respect". Well now Henderson is our captain, and rightly so - people need to show some respect.

People defended Gerrard because time and time again he carried us and more importanly turned up for the big cup finals.

I'm not denying that at all.. It was just a common defence of him from those who are now getting protective over any positive comments towards Jordan.

Nah.....respect and loyalty is earned. There is very little doubt that Gerrard earned these.

Henderson has some way to go....he needs to show us he can be captain. Just because he has been named captain doesnt mean that people will start worshipping him.

Gerrard four much of Gerard Houliers time was used as a box to box midfielder in a very defensive setup and i remember he was very good at it, and could still manage to come up with stunning goals. People tend to remember the Gerrard who didnt track back or the Gerrard who didnt run a lot off the ball....but there was a point when he was constantly one of the hardest working players in all of Europe.
