Hardline on Clyne

I finally get it, it's wrong to discuss how effective a player is and how effective a player potentially can be.
Like how Coutinho used to sky his shots before, but got better.
Or how Lallana used to dwell on the ball.

It is as if some of our members have been completely hypnotized by Donald Trump. If all our players just did their jobs they would really not be useful in a Klop system where every player has to contribute beyond their normal function. For one thing if you are to take the example with Karius where we blamed him for our draw against West Ham then the blame for the loss against Bournemouth is really all Clyne's fault because the winning goal was all engineered from his defensive side which of course we know was non-existent for that particular goal.

If the posters on here have never questioned the lack of crosses coming from Clyne in the games we have played then there is something wrong with their football knowledge - something big. I have no doubt that if Mane was not as effective as he has been they would be on Clyne's back for not being effective enough and for consistently passing back/cutting inside. Contrast this with Milner who is mixing it up on his side as much as he can. The Cynicism in the posts for Coutinho is unfounded at best because he has always been questioned and even recently to the point where most posters will accept his departure for a 'decent' fee. For the record I don't actually think Clyne is the best left back in this league. Most of the players in our team are doing well because of Klop and not because they are some of the best in their positions. Oh - and I thought Lalana's interview comments on MOTD regarding the impact of Klopp on his own form was not very respectful.

First goal in the Chelsea game to brake the deadlock.

FB assist.

Just saying like, as it almost looks like a trend..

I don't think you need to do this every time a FB assists or scores. There is usually 40 full backs playing each weekend in the premiership. Some of them are obviously going to be involved in goals scored. No one disputed that they wouldn't or that they shouldn't. I think a few of us just pointed out (well, I did anyway on page 5) that it won't be the same players every weekend.

Clyne started the first 4 games uncharacterisically poorly and was individually responsible for 3-4 goals early on the in the season through poor positiioning and concentration. It drew little attention because we were flying and scoring for fun, but at the time I was concerned he was going backwards. He's bounced back since then, though, and has regained his consistency. He's final ball could argugably be better, but that's splitting hairs really. He does all the important stuff really well and I'm very pleased to have him.

He was a great signing.

I think I've made my point really, the more attacking your line-up is and the more in possession you expect to be against a stubborn defense the more important the contribution from your FB's in the final third become. This has already been proved in recent game weeks and will continue so going forward.

Without Walker and Rose Spurs would've struggled to win their last few games, they were pretty much the decisive factors in vital moments in the game. They will obv also have poor to bad games and then someone else will have to break down their opponents but they are RELIANT on their FB's to contribute in attack with key passes, assists and goals even. I think we are as well and we sure need them to be if we are going to win the Premiership someday. Just as much as we need a great goalie, a strong central defense, a balanced midfield and in-form strikers.

Sometimes I get the feeling that posters on here only watch our games - and don't get me wrong I really like Clyne - but when you watch say the above mentioned FB's or a player like Bertrand you will see more than just solid defending and forward runs. Actually Clyne might be slightly better defensively than those in mention but he's still some way from their level in the final third. It's a balance of course I just hope we are very much instructing Clyne to improve his game in that department which is pretty much also why I think Modo made a very valid point initially.

I have no problem with Modo's original post. I agree with him. Clyne could improve his game in the final third. I also agree that FB are important in attacking positions. No one disagrees with any of that. No one really disagreed with anything really.

I only posted again in the thread to say that its unnecessary for you to bump this every time a FB scores or assists in the league. There is about 40 of them starting each week in the league. I expect some of them to score and assist every weekend.
