If this is true then what the fuck? Do we really need a right back for £9m?

I don't mind Johnson and I do think he is better than Arbeloa but do we NEED him? We need a winger for he right, oh wait? Is he wanting to play a right back on the wing?

I think that's exactly how he is thinking.

???

More likely Arbeloa on the left.

What's wrong with signing who many people consider one of the best RB's in the the Premier League. Johnson is also relatively effective at getting forward and chips in with the odd goal as well.

Besides that would mean we could also dispence with Dosenna.

The only paper I can see reporting it is the People, but they seem 100% certain, odd signing but hes a good young attacking defender, bet Darbys pissed.

I think Rafa clearly wants more overlapping using the full backs. Both options on 'the wing' push inside a lot so if we have our full backs pushing up it gives us more width.

I do worry that this is hard to attain using 4-4-2 though. At least whilst keeping your defence tight anyway.

The Arbeloa on the left theory may work too, but if that's the sole reason then you wonder what Insua has to do to get w decent run of games after some great recent performances.

I agree that Insua deserves a run. This is all supposing we actually do sign Glen Johnson.

Insua got a slap in the face in the summer, and will get another one now. Arbeloa at left back will be a slap in the face for Aurelio too. Rafa simply hasn't got a clue what to do with full backs and wingers. If only football was played in the middle of the park...

How exactly is it a slap in the face for Aurelio given that he's injury prone. I dare say you'd be the first to criticise Benitez for not having a contingencey.

There aren't many 19 year olds that expect to be regular starters for top teams (unless Arsne Wenger is your boss) so whatever "slap" in the face Insua got, perhaps it was one to get him to buckle down and make the effort to ensure he does puch for a first team place.

Incidentally wasn't it Benitez who promoted him to train with the first team squad, or was that another one of his slaps in the face.

I also love the way you've used a rumoured transfer that hasn't happened as evidence that Benitez hasn't got a clue.

Perhaps it's someone else who hasn't got a clue.

Not just United, there is a full back at United currently playing right back who their manager has said "I think he is ahead of Neville and Brown now, and he has saved me a bit of money". Players sometimes need confidence boosts, not more competition.

Rashid, if you are so fucking concerned with Man United, fuck off to redcafe.net and spread your good word over there.
You are a fucking waster. You offer nothing to this forum.

It could be Insua and Johnson, with arbeloa as back up. I think Rafa knows, we need a natural left footed full back on the left.

I'm not so sure Hansern. In recent weeks when Rafa has been mentioning our top players he has named Arbeloa once or twice.
I think Rafa really rates the guy.

I like Johnson and he is just the type of fullback we need, especially as our wingers aren't the traditional type - I just think its a slap in the face for someone like Darby, that Arbeloa is decent enough, and we could put £9m towards a right winger instead. That said it wouldn't surprise me if Rafa wanted him as a winger.

I like this idea. A good player, and probably a slight step up from Arbeloa (he is a high quality fullback himself)

On top of all that, he is English too.

Tbh I don't think Darby is good enough. But if Degen and Dossena are on their way out, we desperatly need new full backs. Glen Johnson is perfect. I've rated him since his west ham days, shame he went to the Chavs.

I've put his name forward before but I didn't think he'd cost so much, and considering Arbeloa's been in great form, this sort of expense cannot be justified.

There were reports last summer suggesting that Arbeloa's unhappy in Liverpool, so maybe he's off this summer and Benitez is stepping in early while Portsmouth have a weak manager and are dropping down the league.

I guess you can never have too many good players, however it's Pennant's replacement we should be concentrating on. Sell Dossena and there's £4 million for it.

If this is true then it surely suggests Arbeloa is going back to Spain. If so, its a good buy. Bu- ifd Arby isn't going, and when we desperately need an attack-minded right-sided midfielder now, then this is the case of a good player who isn't needed.

There were rumours early in the season that Arbeloa wanted to go home. If that's still his intention, Johnson (while I'm far from convinced that he's better than Arbeloa at his best) is as good a replacement as we could hope for, and the fact that he's English will be a bonus. If Arbeloa's staying, then as others have said the money's needed elsewhere.

Very strange if true. Had anyone suggested before this that we buy a new RB? I know Degen's a) shit and b) always injured, but Carra has proved himself a more-than-capable stand-in for Arbeloa, who has been generally excellent this season.

As has been said, good player, but odd priority.

I'm also more comfartable with Rafa buying defensive players that attacking players midway through a season. All of Rafa's signings barring Torres and Alonso have struggled to hit the ground running. I have at time felt like they nearly always take half a season to come good. It's a bit mystical. In contrast his defensive signing like Masher, Arbeloa, Agger, Skirtle, Sissoko have stepped in and performed (or never performed to a satisfactory level...images of paletta, joesemi and dossena flashes by my head)

I remember saying that he's been playing particularly well of late. Funnily enough, I think he's created quite a few goals for Crouch. One thing that Johnson does have over Arbeloa is much better crossing ability.

Perhaps Rafa has looked at our squad and reckoned that we only have one reasonable RB and that's not good enough (kudos on the Degen purchase Rafa). That said, 9M is an awful lot of money and I think everyone in the world would rather see it invested further up the pitch.

But is there really a good player available to play further up the pitch? Real Madrid are going in for Pennant....

If he signs I bet he plays as our new defensive right winger...

That thought did cross my mind...
