Glen Johnson - done deal according to papers

It's bollocks. Some lazy hack has picked up on the fact that Arbeloa is injured for a while and spun out this crap. I doubt if Johnson would displace Arbeloa and there is no way he is displacing Kuyt. Insua and AUrelio have LB covered.

It's probably bollocks as been said, but Johnson is a very underrated player. Or at least he was.

That said maybe Rafa is looking for player to occupy the wing-back role in a 3-5-2 formation?

......................................Pepe..................................

................Skrtl............Carra............Agger...............

Johnson..........................................................Insua

......................Alonso..............Masher......................

...................................Gerrard.................................

...............Keane...........................Torres..................

Still, would be rather odd to splash the cash on a position where we are not overly fucked.

It's fantasy to think that Benitez is going to play anything other than a back 4 for prolonged periods.

For someone that regularly tinkers with his team and tactics, I can recall 3 at the back once.

He's just not going to play with 3 at the back

If he signs I bet he plays as our new defensive right winger...
That thought did cross my mind...
Except that would mean dropping Kuyt.

Which isn't likely to happen.

Lack of pace is one of our biggest problems in current team. Johnson would bring more pace. Sign him.

That would mean selling Riera half a season after buying him. Babel may as well be sold too.

Kaka and Messi wouldn't get a start for the Red Machine.

Portsmouth are feked money wise, should we really be paying 9m for one of their full backs?
They've just got £20m for Diarra

With a reported 10m release clause - he'll move on in the summer.

It'll probably only be £5m when they get relegated.

Another Rafa masterstroke.

I'm glad this hasnt materialised as I just couldnt see the sense in spending that kind of money on an area where we have 2 good options.

This window is the biggest waste of time ever. If they are going to persist with it, then they need to change the rules so that no player is cup-tied.

EXCLUSIVE: Chelsea back in to thwart Liverpool for £17m Portsmouth right back Johnson

Chelsea were last night locked in talks with Portsmouth over a deal to take England
defender Glen Johnson back to Stamford Bridge, for a fee that could eventually reach £17million, despite interest from Liverpool.

The right back, sold by former Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho for £4m less than two years ago, is with the England camp in Kazakhstan, where he is expected to win his 14th cap on Saturday.
Glen Johnson of Portsmouth

On the ball: Johnson has improved dramatically

For Liverpool it will mean they have been stunned for the second day in succession by the speed of movement, and money on offer, of a transfer rival. Only 24 hours earlier, they lost out to Manchester City for Gareth Barry.

The Anfield club may respond today with an increased offer, but manager Rafa Benitez needs to sell first and they cannot match Chelsea’s spending power.

That means Johnson, 24, is set to follow Daniel Sturridge into Stamford Bridge, with the deal probably completed early next week.

It is believed England coach Fabio Capello recommended Johnson to new Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti.

Johnson, then with West Ham, was Roman Abramovich’s first signing for the club and, despite failing to impress Mourinho, has since become one of the most cultured full backs in Europe.

Sportsmail revealed on Tuesday how Johnson was part of Ancelotti’s wish-list when he tookover from Guus Hiddink.

It is thought Johnson’s conduct since leaving the club, as well as his playing development, has impressed Chelsea. He refused to criticise them and admitted he had to improve his game.

One source said yesterday: ‘He has behaved in a mature manner, as well as improving as a player with regular first-team football. Roman always liked him because of his attacking dare as a full back. Jose did not always agree, but he’s
not at the club any more, is he?’

The idea that we are being out maneuvered in all these reports is rediculous.

Other clubs are overpaying because they don't have to function as actual businesses. That we won't match those figures is simply unavoidable.

£17m.

Two years ago they sold him for £4m.

Good work Chelsea, way to make yourself financially independent of Roman by 2010.

Was about to say that. £33m for two fucking right backs...

And Ferreira's still at the club yes? How much did he cost?

And Belletti's still there isn't he?

What a fucking hovel of a club.
