Fat Sam has downing it again - Super Stu signs for West Ham

The thing with Aquilani is at least you could see the logic in signing him. It didn't work out - it would've been nice if management had've done a better job at figuring out where his head was at (i.e. not in fucking England) before we spunked 17M quid on him - but it happens I suppose.

Downing was a disaster that most called from the get go and when it's that obvious it becomes a fairly unforgivable mistake.

What you're not taking into account is that Downing was so obviously a mediocre player, and an uninspired signing. I mean there were plenty of warning signs with Aquilani, especially his injury, so it was a stupid risk but I think there was potential there for it to have worked out better.

Also, the reason Aquilani's contribution is so low has a lot to do with him being on loan after the first season!

We'll have to dredge up all the posts from last season when people were saying that, yes, they could see the point of Downing when on form. And of course, every club wanted Acquilani - they could all see the logic. It's a bit odd that it took so long to whittle down the contenders to the lucky winner who finally signed that genius. But these are great threads - utterly pointless wastes of time, and therefore the lifeblood of a forum.

Based on those stats Aquilani scored and assisted more frequently than Downing in terms of playing time.

Whatever the case, arguing over who was the bigger flop seems a little pointless at this stage. They're both shithouses at the end of the day.
Hence why I gave up.

This all could have been so different for Downing, if only he had just touched the 'This is Anfield' sign for luck before coming onto the pitch.

"in terms of playing time". Hilarious.

Not really. If a player stays six months at a club and scores 2 goals, I'd rate him higher than somebody he stays two years and gets 4 goals. As of this moment Emile Heskey has scored more goals for Liverpool than Luis Suarez. Does that make him a better player? Does it fuck. Aquilani was a massive flop, but you could see the talent was there. They fucked up by not paying closer attention to his injury record and mentality. Downing has never been a stand out performer in his life. He is an all round ok footballer. There was uprorar on here when a rumour went around that Benitez wanted to sign him. I don't mind Stu. If he'd been 5-8 million as a squaddie I wouldn't mind at all. He's had a few decent games this season. He has never performed to the standard to be part of such a high profile move. He was bought to cross balls in for the worst signing in the history of football (yes, I think 35 million on Carroll is the worst signing in history) and as the vast majority of people predicted it didn't work out.

Newcastle United are understood to have distanced themselves from talk linking them with out of favour Liverpool winger Stewart Downing.
Reports from out sister paper the Liverpool Echo correctly reported that the former Middlesbrough man has been offered to United and other Premier League clubs for a cut price £5million.
However, the Chronicle understands that United have played down the approach as they concentrate bringing in another striker.
United were continuing discussions to bring in Bafetimbi Gomis from Lyon while talks are also still in progress the bring in Darren Bent.
Gomis is thought to be the preferred choice but Bent could well be an option and is a player that Alan Pardew would love to bring to Newcastle after working with the England international at Charlton Athletic.
With Newcastle already having Sylvain Marveaux, Jonas, Hatem Ben Arfa, Yoan Gouffran and Hatem Ben Arfa able to operate on the left hand side, the offer of Downing is not thought to be something that is seriously being considered at this moment at St James' Park.
Downing's wages of £80,000 per week would also prove to be a major stumbling block with his salary way above the average at United.

newcastle didn't fall for it

This dude's kinda got a point...

@BrianDurand56: I think Stewart Downing deserves a bit more respect from Liverpool supporters. Compare the shit he's getting with Suarez's standing ovation.
Disagree, a footballer does his talking on the pitch, as far as Luis is concerned his efforts deserve all the support he has got, how often does the kop get it wrong? As for downing, he is an embodiment of what is wrong with English footie, mediocrity galore, over priced and over paid - if he showed one tenth of the passion of Luis he would be a different footballer. Good riddance.

he'd be a good squad option if it wasnt for the fact he'd be getting in the way of the development of youngsters, i like him, he'll do well this year with another team i think

I think this is the main reason he's gone ... Rodgers realizes everything Downing can add to the team, Ibe and Sterling can also do ... and then some. So what's the point of keeping Downing, and his wages, in the squad when it's hurting the development of two of our most prized youngsters?

I thought Downing looked like a decent member of the team last season. Yes - we could definitely get a better player for his wages and he wasn't worth the £20m spent but I always felt he was striving to fit in and at times was very good. If he left i'd wish him well.

Spurs must lose Gareth Bale to land Stewart Downing

Tottenham will have to part with Gareth Bale as well as £15 million if they want to land Middlebrough's Stewart Downing.

According to a report in the Mail, Harry Redknapp's offer of Hossam Ghaly, Gilberto and Adel Taarabt as part of a player-plus-cash deal does not interest Gareth Southgate, and aside from offering more money, Bale is the only bargaining tool remaining.

Redknapp is understood to want to better the options he has on the left wing, and 24-year-old Downing has been identified as the man for the job. But having just signed a five-year deal it is unlikely that Southgate will let his captain go without a fight.

How times change!

Yup. He definitely improved last season. But he still isn't (and never will be) good enough. Get rid ASAP.

Although, like you said, I'd wish him well if he left. He did work hard, but it just didn't happen for him. I think he'd do well with a lower team.

Well, Downing is only wanting to stay because of the wages he's on, Suarez actually has some sort of ambition driving his motives, no matter how flawed they are.
