Deserves its own thread probably. How do they do this technologically? How does it compare with the "atmosphere" in other leagues – Germany, Spain? Do you prefer watching without it (see poll)?

This made me chuckle:

They have been doing this in the Korean league and absolutely nailed it.

I didn't watch the Arsenal v City match - was it just crowd noise or did they have chants included?

In the K-League they actually incorporate the home team's chants and it works quite nicely - I was sceptical to begin with.

I flicked between it on or off. I found that it improves the general situation as backgrond noise in normal play, but it completely fails with the crescendos when there is a near miss or bad tackle ... if it did happen it would typically be a second or two too late

In the premier league - fake crowd noise cannot be heard in the stadium. You have the option on sky sports at least to watch the game with and without it.

For sky coverage it sounded like they just had FIFA crowd noise. With someone controlling the additional noises for a chance/goal etc.

I watch a lot of games with the sound on mute anyway (mainly anything from sky sports with Tyler commentating), so had last nights games on mate as the crowd noise was pants. It's a pity they don't give you some sort of option as to what commentators you want to listen to aswell as the crowd noise, that'd be pretty sweet.

BBC :
"...the basic crowd noise is taken from the previous meeting and it is mixed with the real noise of the game. Reaction samples for scenarios such as penalties, fouls and decisions from VAR are created and "inserted" by a watching producer."

Totally agree. Those sex dolls they used as a fill-in crowd (pun intended) were awesome !

That's doesn't seem true to me. There was clearly a chant of Utd, utd. Part way through that first half of the city game. The ones you get on FIFA.

Yea that quote doesn't relate specifically to the City game. Looked like Sky doing something else and not very good at all.

I'm used to watching the yoof games where there's only a handful of people there, so I can imagine what it's like with these PL games. I find that the commentator is far more intrusive when there's barely any crowd noise, so a good and likeable commentator can be very effecive whereas a really tiresome one can drive you nuts even quicker than usual.

But there's a third option - watching with the sound down. Martin Tyler irritates me too much to listen to him, and I can well do without Carra's chronically alarmed and chipmunk-pitched co-commentaries, too, so I think I'll stick to silence. That tends to let you concentrate a bit more, so I'm going to be fascinated to see how different the pace of the game will seem.

I'm ok with the crowd noise although it needs to improve.

But those giant screens with fans watching are fucking awful.

The giant seat covers would be good if they didn't have corporate advertising on them. Surely Anfield could do proper banners over the seats made by fans?

At one point yesterday, there were two empty boxes on the city fans zoom screen in the gorund ... typical. I'll see if I can find the tweet
