Early Expectations for next season.

I think we'll bottle it around..... January, then we'll have a great run, but lose a crucial match and finish 6th.

As long as we're close, I'll be content. As long as we're not 30 fucking points off top I'll be overjoyed

4th should be a realistic target every year. Any year we don't get in the top 4 it's because we fucked up too many games against shit teams.

This is what annoys me. If we don't get 4th "we fucked it up", or perhaps we played to our abilities because maybe were not ACTUALLY good enough to be a top 4 team. Perhaps we were playing within our means.

If suarez stays then I would hope we can aim for a 10 point improvement. If not, then there is a lot of pressure on the newbies to perform.

On another note, we now have a lot (10 by my reckoning) of players competing for the 4 atacking spots! That is amazing. 6 of whom Rodgers has signed and 2 he has brought through from the academy. Pretty clear to see where his main concern is!
We still need cover for full backs badly imo, along with ideally 1 top class, commanding centre back. Wish we could have come to an agreement re papadpolous

If we DO get into the top four I bloody well hope we don't prance around like Wenger and Co did. That was the most pathetic sight since the Premiership began.

This really is a pic of them celebrating getting fourth!

We could probably end up anywhere from 1st to 10th with the center of that being the most likely spots, 4th to 6th.

Having said that we should not focus on this at all at this stage imo, all that matters is to get out of the starting grid like thunder and lightning.

I want the boys to play the first match of the Season like it was the last decisive one for the trophy. The next one, and the one after that, and the ones after that, the same, must win games.

Can we manage a great start, for ONCE, then I sincerely believe we could be hanging on all the way to May and actually turn the good ship around much faster than any of us would've dared to even dream about.

Not much between the best sides why momentum could be king, and the very last thing we need is another roller coaster start that'll make the medias, some parts of the fans etc. feed on our misery.

All that matters is 3 points against Stoke. And then we'll go from there.

Since January there's been a nice, clear logic about developments, and that looks set to continue. I think it's pretty likely that we'll be one of the most attractive teams to watch next season. I'd like, ideally, to see us recruit another experienced player with a bit of nous, as we seemed painfully naive at times last season, but I still expect us to go up at least four places next season.

It's too early to say, but Rodgers should be striving for fourth and a vastly improved points total.

He needs to make sure we start a lot stronger this year. A poor start last year cost us CL football.

i should be used to it now , i should accept that this is modern football ...but this idea that 4th is "success" drives me mad .

I would phrase it as a minimal acceptable standard, given the financial and competitive pressures of the league. When there's £25M difference in getting it and not, then heck maybe success is an appropriate word.

A 15 point improvement is needed to make the CL league. That means winning 3 games we should have not lost last year ( think west brom away, united @ home, and Swansea ). Then we need to turn three needless draws into wins (think City at home, Newscastle, and SToke). It's perfectly attainable but we have to stop talking about how great the other teams are. Because they're not.

Last years results. Easy to find 15 points to improve us there

An awful lot depends on whether we keep Suarez or not. We did ok without him, but against poor teams when there was nothing left to play for in the league. Some people seem to forget just how fucking good he is. If Suarez stays and we add maybe another defender to the squad I not only think we could get top 4, I'd be quietly confident that we would. Without him, I think it would be too much of an ask for us. On paper we have our easiest start for years, which is just as well, since Suarez won't be missed as much (if he stays of course) and we really need to capatalise on that and rack up some points and be in good form by the time we have a run of games against good teams.

Who's saying the other teams are great?

I just said we're not as good as them.

Also, there are 3 great teams at the minute, United, city and Chelsea. I think Chelsea have got a great squad. They buy a decent striker they'll have an immaculate squad

Those top sides are all well capable of getting bent over and fucked on any ground in the country regardless of how much better than us they are. We won't have that problem if Rodgers succeeds in implementing his style of play.

4th is definitely achievable but we still need a proper defensive midfielder in order to push on from last season. Teams literally walked through our centre.

If we can add consistency to our game then we should be aiming at best at 3rd seeing as most of our rivals are now with new management.... thats no guarantee of success.....

Maybe you're right.

But losing to teams like West Brom (fucking twice), Swansea, Southampton and Villa and drawing against teams like West Ham, Reading, Sunderland and Newcastle are our biggest downfall. Yes, we've become unbelievably shit, but these are still games we should be winning. We're at least slightly better than the likes of those teams.

But you make it sound like matches are won on paper. Form, transition, injuries, squad selection etc all impact results. And that's just our end!

I think any team can beat any team in our league. The difference is consistency and a winning mentality. We're slowly nurturing both.

4 or better should be our goal, but if we font achieve it, it shouldn't be seen as a failure.

We're trying to grow a title winning side, and I'd rather it not over achieve and then have its confidence shattered when we lose.

Its what we always do. Beat a big side but lose against the dross, the take 2/3 games to get back to form, then lose again.

Last season was different and I found it refreshing. We looked decent for nearly all the season, even when we lost.

To make the Top 4 we need to improve on this and turn some of those draws into wins and losses into draws :

Top 6 (exc Everton) Table 2012/13
Man Utd 17
Man City 16
Chelsea 15
Spurs 14
Liverpool 9 (1-6-3)
Arsenal 9

You've nailed my point in your last sentence. We've lost too many games that we should have won. Even against the stronger teams.

We need a Ronnie Whelan type player. Quietly efficient, but also a silent enforcer who's versatile and can chip in with the odd goal.

It's petty certain suarez is gone. Who could chip in that amount of goals for us next season? Is there a replacement out there even 80% as good?

Sure

The trick is, when you dump loads of cash on a replacement, make sure he's good.

Atletico Madrid are very good at this, they basically swapped Aguero and Forlan for Falcao, and then secured three years of Courtois after selling De Gea for big money.

Spending big on Lukaku, or a player like Muriel wouldn't be a bad idea. Spending 40M on Michu though...
