Daniel Agger

I think the concept of Daniel Agger is better than the actual Daniel Agger.

With so long spent in the treatment room over the years, the legend surround his capabilities grew - now that we are able to see him play regularly its clear, while he's good - he's not that good.

Of course, rarely being able to string periods of injury free consistency over the years have stunted his development - he seems leaner and less physically imposing these days and was never blessed with great pace.

His big problem is that his reading if the game doesn't appear to be good enough to cover his lack of pace, so when he does, regularly, get caught out of position - he's not able to call on much to get him back in to position.

I think he could be useful alongside a more organised and imposing CB - but I suspect he's peaked and injuries have meant he never scaled the heights he may have been capable of.

I don't think he'd figure regularly for any of the teams above us - bar Evertob.

Downhill ever since this guy...

Legend can someone clone him?

You've nicked that from someone haven't you?

Haha. Nothing like that.
It's just that I was sure I read a couple of posters using the exact same words over the last couple of years re: agger.
No biggie.

Maybe it was embedded in my subconscious from somewhere.

I'm not sure if Stevie is teasing. But the words are from Onceys post on Joe Cole

It's a phrase that is applied (with adjustments) to various people/places/bands/stuff quite a lot.

It always has been for my money. He dined out on that West Ham goal for years.

He's a decent player but he's not a particularly good defender, his positioning has always been woeful. But he looks majestic when he's striding forward with the ball & some people seem to like that.

We should have sold Agger a couple of times when we had the chance. That City paid 22M for Lescott but wouldn't for Agger tells you something.

Carragher and Skrtel (who is usually good defensively) from now on please.

Agger was extremely poor last night!I But it's a tough call. Last season our first choice back 4 was the same as it would be this season if all members were fit yet this season we're lacking drastically. Center halves constantly out of position and Reina seeming to be more under pressure. Its not Aggers fault per say but it's part and parcel of playing the way we are. Even watching the classico last night for instance, defensively both madrid and barca center halves (Puyol aged 34 and Varane for madrid aged 19) were making convincing last ditch tackles akin to carra in istanbul, we just dont get that with our lads any more. Anytime this season one of our center halves has been called upon we're at 6's and 7's. I'm putting it down to the system and coaching at the moment, theres no way they just forgot how to defend, the emphasis has just changed. Defending in the premier league at the moment has gone out the window, you only have to look at our two goals last night, Arsenal were horrible! Onwards and upwards!

By the same token, the fact they paid 17m for Kolo Toure and were willing to go above that for Agger also tells you something.
The fact the league champions wanted him also tells you something.

I think Agger is partially at fault for both goals. There was another episode that stuck in my memory, when Cazorla pinged a long pass over his head to Walcott and Agger completely misjudged the flight of the ball, so Walcott had a clean 1 on 1 with Reina (Pepe saved). I don't know what's wrong with him, where all these mental mistakes come from.

On the other hand, we have to give Agger credit for the header he won from the corner that Podolski cleared off the line. Both Agger and Skrtel are a decent threat from set pieces and that's a big advantage they have over Carragher.

Overall, I think it's way too early to give up on Agger. I'm glad we have him in the team. But he needs to improve, no question about that.

Is he then partly to be credited for Arse not scoring another 3 or 4 from their total dominance?

Agger blocked Walcott actually, but yeah the ball should never have gone over his head.

A few months back people were calling for Suarez to be sold. I've defended Johnson many a time on here too when people wanted him out. And now it's Agger's turn, despite him being our best defender.

Some posters will never learn.

Imagine where we'd be now without Suarez, Johnson and Agger eh? Going down?

To blame Agger for the second goal is just crazy btw.

Look at the play again and watch how Lucas and Johnson combined lets Walcott waltz inbetween them after he's been sat on his arse even. It's really poor defensive work from the two and yeah Agger's block didn't work out but he throws himself at the ball - what would you else expect him to do?

I love Agger -

I strongly think however that in the next 1-3 years, we'll need two CBs who are better than him (& Skrtel) if we want to win the league. He's good, in fact, he's very good but we need a far more dominating CB imo to partner him if he's to continue in the next few years as a starting CB.

Agger was behind the Kennedy assassination, Agger scored the own goal in the FA cup final his goal against West Ham was deflected and Torres elbowed Agger.

Don't bite man.

There's a reason why Agger was rested against Oldham. It hasn't' got anything to do with what mr "Enrique is a championship player" is saying.

Hoping beyond hope that Agger and Skrtel would develop into a partnership has cost us IMO. Neither are strong enough in the air, and neither have the commanding presence that has been sorely lacking since Hyypia departed. Neither are that good at reading the game either. I still think that one of them could form a very good partnership with a dominant, self-assured, leader of men, but I couldn't really give a fuck which one of them made way to accommodate this beast. I guess Agger would be the obvious one because of his injury record.

Just out of curiosity, who would you rather have in CD right now then?
