Could it be true? - RE Suarez

Luis Suarez will end doubts over his future by committing to a new long-term deal at Liverpool.

The Uruguayan returned to Merseyside yesterday following his country's elimination from the Olympics, during which he aired his frustration at what he considered a lack of respect by the supporters of host nation Great Britain during last week's 1-0 defeat at the Millennium Stadium.

Suarez hit the headlines last season when he was forced to serve an eight-game ban after the Football Association found him guilty of using offensive language to Patrice Evra in October and refused to shake the Manchester United defender's hand in the corresponding fixture.

During his 18 months with the Reds, however, the 25-year-old has recorded an impressive 21 goals in 52 appearances and has regularly caught the attention of several of Europe's elite.

Will this stop, at least for 30minutes anyway, everyone acting like complete arses across the boards as they have been with all this doom and gloom lately?

Great news Suarez, that should mean he's here for another season at least!

Soccernet says he's signed. And this was the photo they chose for the report (yes, look at the file name).

Suarez signs new Liverpool contract

August 7, 2012
By Harry Harris, Football Correspondent
Luis Suarez has signed a new long-term contract with Liverpool, ESPN can confirm.

Suarez, 25, has been linked with Juventus recently but Liverpool have moved to secure his services and ward off any suitors.

The Uruguayan has scored 21 goals in 52 games since joining from Ajax for £22 million in January 2011 and is viewed as one of the most dangerous forwards in the Premier League.
Juve were ready to pounce for the 25-year-old after being rebuffed in their attempts to sign Robin van Persie from Arsenal, but Liverpool have beaten them to the punch with what is believed to be a four-year deal though to 2016.

Liverpool's own TV channel accidentally broadcast the news that Suarez had signed a new deal prematurely, but ESPN can confirm that a new deal has been thrashed out following his involvement at the Olympics.

The forward is expected to be a cornerstone of Brendan Rodgers' new-look Liverpool team, and ESPN can also confirm that the club are continuing their hunt to sign £15 million-rated Joe Allen from Swansea.

Moments after signing the deal, Suarez told Liverpoolfc.com: "To sign a new contract with Liverpool is unbelievable for me because I am so happy here at both the club and also in the city.
"That is important for me and I am very happy with my new contract.
"When you are a kid, everybody wants to play for Liverpool. I am here now and it is a dream for me, and now I am a Liverpool fan.
"I am happy off the pitch because the people of Liverpool are good with me and my family. I try my best on the pitch and when you are happy off the pitch, you are happy on the pitch.
"I want to say thank-you to the fans because they are our 12th player. The supporters of Liverpool are unbelievable.
"Five or six years ago I watched on TV the stadium and the club, and now I play here and the supporters have helped me. That's very important for me."
Suarez has established himself as a Kop favourite at Anfield since his transfer from Ajax in January 2011.
The No.7 has scored 21 goals and created countless assists for his teammates in 52 appearances for Liverpool.
Manager Brendan Rodgers added: "I'm delighted. When you have the opportunity to work with world-class players it's fantastic.
"There were certainly a few clubs who were interested in him but over the off-season he and I communicated well - and he's committed himself for the long term here now.
"He's really looking forward to playing in this way of working. As a manager and for the supporters, I'm delighted because I know how important he is for them."
Stay tuned to Liverpoolfc.com throughout the night for more exclusive reaction to the deal from Suarez and Rodgers.

Mods can we change the title to 'Suarez : I am a Liverpool fan - 4 more years' or words to that effect. 🙂

doesnt sound like a contract extension, he signed a 5.5 year contract through to 2016, the article says this is a 4 year contract, so to 2016. looks like this is a case of giving him a higher wage to make sure he stays with us

You'd assume he's been told who we're after as well as having a wage bump, or at the very least completely buys Rodgers ideas, either way it bodes very well.

It'll also help attract players seeing someone high profile stay with us when he could have gone elsewhere.

Fucking great news.

It also, which I don't think has been mentioned, paves the way for the other players we are trying to sign extensions with, notably Agger and Skrtel, or at least might intensify speculation regarding them until they do sign on the dotted line.
