Im just watching a Fowler goals compendium here, and what strikes me is just how good Collymore was.
I loved him when he came to us and thought he and Fowler were as good a partnership as ive seen.
The years that passed by have dulled my love for him, and i was left feeling a bit let down by him in the end. But what a fucking player he was. He had the power and presence of Vieira and the skill running with the ball of an Henry....ok not quite, but i cant help but feel he played for us in the wrong era, when our team and discipline werent what they ought to have been. The squad was good and maybe a Houllier could have won things for us then or maybe im being unfair to Evans and we just werent good enough.
A young fit Collymore today would be perfect for our left attacking berth.

On a slightly related note - I think its forgotten how good a player mcmanaman was. I watched some old stuff on him recently and it blew me away. He was a wonderful player, and its sad that its not recognised that way.

[/quote]I agree. Some talent he was. In fact that team with Ince, Redknapp, McManaman, Fowler, Collymore, James etc should have won the SOMETHING.

I thought Collymore was awesome. Because Berger often played at his expense I never took to Berger

Some old guy in the pub when we was watching him kept calling him McMagicman how true he was.....

That team had an abundance of talent and could murder any opposition on its day. What it didn't have was professionalism (on or off the pitch) or a manager strong enough to whip his players into line. McMoneyman and Collywobble typified it - superb talents, but featherheads who were allowed to run riot and took full advantage.

At least McMoneyman showed he could knuckle down after he left. Collywobble on the other hand is one of the greatest wastes of football talent I've ever seen.

Collymore had everything APART from a normal mind....

Really cracking player in his pomp.

I can't think of a more spectacular debut goal than Stan's against Wednesday at Anfield.

That was in his second season when he had one eye on the exit door and Uncle Roy knew it. His application at that point of his Liverpool career was nothing short of disgraceful.

He won't be remembered as the great player he was because of the way he left us, but at times he was unplayable and was easily as important as Fowler in the mid 90s

Collymore when in the mood was unplayable, sadly he wasn't in the mood enough and had some shocking games near the end for us.

My favourite game of his was Fowler hitting the 100 mark. We won 5-1 Collymore set up 4.

Mcmanaman was nothing short of magic and was that good that he got man marked so often. It was a case of most teams in the 90's saying if you stop Mcmanaman you stop Liverpool.

Everyone remembers his wonder goals against Villa and Celtic by my 2 favourite Mcmanaman moments were away to Newcastle where he thumped in a half volley and away to Arsenal where he ran half the length of the pitch before squaring to Fowler for a last minute win in a really shitty yellow strip.

He did the same against city away where he beat 6 players before giving Fowler yet another tap in.

Fowler very lucky to have him in the team. Legend.

A dark yellow... almost mustard, with black (or another dark color) Liverbirds all over the place.... that's the one I think. (Goes to pull out the old, tattered, Fowler's Hot 100 VHS Tape).

Collymore was excellent. Me best memory of him and Fowler is a last second equalizer at Goodison Park, when Stan flew down the left side, chalk on his boots for the entire run, and when he whipped a cross in, Fowler got no more than two toes of his outstretched left boot onto it to equalize. Collymore ran BACKWARDS back up the pitch staring at the Blue-noses the whole way. Martin Tyler shouts... "Never write off those in Red!!!!"

Mcmanaman was my favourite player when I was a teenager growing up supporting the team. After Fowler obv.

Next was Collymore. I always have these 3 players in almost every football manager game I played back then, and they ruledzzzzz

But not our defence back then though.

Still, it's fair to say then underachieved.

A domestic trophy was not beyond their capability.

Hate to say this but it sound so much like the newcastle team with shearer, ferdinand, ginola and etc. Should've won something but didn't.

Yeah, that's why our games with them were consistently entertaining.

Alan Hansen's worst nightmare.

Collymore started moaning after about five games. A great potential but a flawed person. McManaman was great to watch but he couldn't cope with man marking. Once the likes of Jim Smith and even Graham Taylor started assigning a marker for him we were fecked.

That was the problem with Stan. He's mental. And it seemed that, although the talent was very clearly there, the reason we were not seeing it on a regular basis was because he couldn't be bothered. Nothing is going to piss off fans more than a player who is clearly very very good but isn't interested enough in showing it. Its rather disrespectful.

Agreed. Also, on the occasions that McManaman was having an off day offensively his head would go down and he seemed not to bother whereas on the very rare occasion Giggs had an off day offensively he would still do the dirty work and help Irwin out.

Re Collymore, I actually think it was about 2.5 weeks. He scored that blinder against Wednesday, then got injured against Leeds, then started spouting. Big fella, loads of talent, not much application, made the big time, liked the trappings, full stop. Met him once, he was a beaut.
Macca was great in that 3-4-1-2 when he was the '1', bit useless on the RW in a 4-4-2. Except against Celtic. Can't grumble about his career like.

I believe Collymore's reason for moaning was that the team was not built around him. He felt he was signed because of how he played in a particular role for Forest, and was asked to play a different role at Liverpool, and that this was unwise. One can appreciate what he was saying but it was hardly the way to endear himself at a new club.

I am not sure that acting the big time Charlie and living the superstar lifestyle was the main problem with him. Lots of players at that time did that and got away with it. Stan's issue was that he was mentally weak. And still is probably.

It was a depressing sign, his early moaning, because (a) the negotiations to sign him had taken ages, and yet he seemed to have only realised how the team played when he got here, and (b) Uncle Roy responded by saying something wet and Uncle Royish like, 'He's perhaps got a point'! It really set the stage for a relationship of stroppy player and soft boss that was doomed to disaster. There was never going to be a major change to the team to suit Collymore when Fowler was already so crucial and Rush was still on the books, and that must have been obvious from the endless discussions he had with 'The Man from Del Monte,' so it made one despair.
