Clint Dempsey

I really hope we don't pay £8m for Dempsey. I reckon a good rule of thumb is that your first choice players should cost, at the outside, about £1.5m a year in net transfer fees. Being generous and assuming we'd get 4 decent years from him, £6m should be the limit of our valuation, and even then that's bending over backwards considering he's not all that great and his contract situation. It'd be a different story if he was going to seriously improve our chances of finishing top 4, but that's pretty hard to believe.

You havent factored in the money we will make of Deuce records

Martin Jol fielded 2 different XIs for both halfs in Fulham's friendly vs. HB Koge but Dempsey was not involved at all.

Fulham team to play HB Køge: Schwarzer (c), Brister, Halliche, Baird, Briggs; Davies, Gecov, Etuhu, Kacaniklic; Trotta, Dalla Valle

2nd half team: Stockdale, Riether, Hangeland, Hughes, Riise, Diarra, Sidwell, Dembele, Frei, Petric, Mesca.

Goal.com understands that the American has rejected a new contract offer from Fulham and has told the Londoners that he wants to leave for a Champions League-calibre club.

Liverpool have pursued Dempsey for 12 months and have now stepped up their interest in a player whom Brendan Rodgers has privately made clear that he wants to bring to Merseyside.

Fulham value the USA international at £9m but a combination of his age – 29 – and his contract situation – he has just entered the final year of his current deal – mean that they will settle for a fee of around £5m.

Sources have said that Liverpool have not yet made a formal offer for the attacking midfielder and are, indeed, not expected to sign him until Carroll’s future is resolved.

Newcastle have made an official bid to sign the England striker on a season-long loan, which was rejected on Sunday night by the Merseysiders.

Nevertheless, Rodgers has told Liverpool that he wants to offload the club’s record signing on a permanent deal and the club are willing to listen to any offers of around £15m.

West Ham United have made enquiries for Carroll but only have the funds to make a loan move in which the cost of his wages would be shared with Liverpool, while Fulham’s reported interest last week was believed to merely be a carefully-engineered mechanism to push through the Dempsey deal.

Aston Villa are interested in Carroll but the player’s most realistic avenue for a permanent move is a romantic return to boyhood club Newcastle.

It is believed that the Tyneside club regard Carroll as a back-up option in case they lose Demba Ba, whose future remains up in the air because of the £7m exit clause in his deal that runs until the end of the month.

Liverpool, who signed Italy forward Fabio Borini last Friday, could have to bide their time before making an offer for Dempsey.

The attacking midfielder, who scored 17 Premier League goals last season and 23 in all competitions, has rejected Fulham’s offer of a new three year-contract that includes an option for a fourth year.

Dempsey, who moved to west London five-and-a-half years ago, believes that it could be the last opportunity he gets to play for one of the elite Premier League clubs.

i could except 5 m. although I would prefer a swap deal with any of the following: aqua, cole, adams.

Accept, not except.

Not correcting you to be an arse, merely to inform cos I believe English isn't your first language &as I can't speak any other language criticism would be hypocritical at best. Though feel free to call me a call cunt if you like.

I rate Carroll more highly than Dempsey to be honest. Clint has underperformed more often than not - one or two good seasons at Fulham, you know what that means when he joins us.

for 5 million quid, I'd be happy.

God, this again.

We went through all this last summer after Downing had come off the back of the season of his life too. Starts off with this:

"For 5M, even 6M I'd be happy"

"Rumours are that Club X are holding out for 8M"

"We've bid 9M, happy with that, worth pushing the extra mill if he's who we want."

"Sold for 20M. I'm glad. Kenny has got the player he wanted from day one. The price doesn't matter, he was our number 1 target from day 1 and I'm delighted the owners have backed the manager with this. Besides, Stewart/Clint/Andy didn't set the pricetag, it's just up to them to deliver and I'm confident they will."

5 million for a better version of Kuyt - goalscoring, touch etc - isn't a bad proposition ... We need to have squad players - that's all he is. Notice, from day 1 I've said fee is key here (anything over 7/8 is not worth it).

A better version of Kuyt my ringpiece.

He's had one good year at Craven fucking Cottage LeTall. Kuyt has done it for club and country, in the league, Champions League, World Cup, and evereywhere fucking required for 6 years.

I didn't say 'Kuyt over his 6 years for Liverpool.' Kuyt last year was very poor. Dempsey is an upgrade.

I would say the same thing if we got a midfielder who's better now than Gerrard ....

I get the point, but then what we're saying is he's a decent player who's an improvement on a aging, past his best Dirk Kuyt, but still not probably better than the peak age Dirk, who didn't win the league with us and had alot of people moaning for years on here about him not being good enough.

I do rate Dempsey btw, for a small fee as a part of the squad, because like Kuyt he does give everything and will score important goals, but as Ryan said, we shouldn't allow ourselves to stung this time. Offer what we think he's worth (due to contract and age, probably £5m) and walk away if Fulham or the player take the piss, ala Sigurdsson.

Kuyt last year didn't play cos the halfwit manager we had in charge had to try and justify the fucking hapless jokes he bought for 20M in his place, so played them instead.

That, and him being 31 and past his best.

There's no point in saying Dempsey is a "better version of Kuyt" based on one season when they're at different stages of their career.

Prior to this year, I'd never heard you or anyone on this fucking planet suggesting Dempsey was a better version of Kuyt either.

Him and Suarez always looked like they enjoyed playing upfront together, infact, everyone I've seen play alongside Kuyt looked like they enjoyed playing alongside him, Torres said as much plenty of times, that he was a 'dream' to play alongside. He should have played more, he'd have scored more (despite the misses and the lack of goals last season on the face of it) and we'd have won more games.

No need to slag Kuyt for one poor season. He was bought as a striker but overall he didn't score enough goals. However, he always put in a shift and was the quinessential big game player. Thanx for the goals.

Dempsey is unproven at Liverpool so any argument is pointless. He may be a big fish in Fulham's small pond but he'll be just another fish in the Liverpool ocean. He has achieved at Fulham and that can't be denied. He is a decent player who contributes.

Was he bought as a striker? I always thought he was a second/centre forward, I'm probably splitting hairs but he was always here doing the donkey work for others, I've always maintained a standard return for a good centre forward is about 12 goals a season. His record for us was - 14,11,15,11,15,5 (an average of just under 12 a season).

Same again for goalscoring midfielders (probably about 10 goals)
