Clint Dempsey

At the end of the day, all things being even, when push comes to shove, and with all due respect, you just have to laugh.

I wish we'd just paid the 26 million for Dempsey two years ago. At least he would have been 27 then. Can't we get Fulham to thrown in a good kid or two? Do they have any?

AND IT SAID IT IN THE GRAUNIAD

What this thread has taught us is that if you use the word "blueprint" in your argument then you automatically know more about football than everyone else. It's like 2006's "zonalmarking" or 2010's "soccernomics".

'Yeah but like, does he fit into our blueprint?

'Erm, I'm sorry I'm gonna have to stop you there cos you just sounded like a cunt.'

9m & Dempsey for Carroll.

Hahahaha. If that is true we'll be a fucking laughing stock. Again.

It can't be right, just can't.

The offer's no good cos Carroll's no good.

We're reaping what we sowed here. Waxing 35M on Carroll was the biggest fucking joke of all time, so everyone queuing up now to criticise Fulham, Al Fayed and whomever else for their derisory offer should focus on the cause of all this:

Us.

We wasted the fucking money in the first place.

Its not a derisory offer though. They probably value Dempsey at 8 or 9 million. Their offer, if true, values caroll at 17 or 18 million. I think thats the opposite of derisory.

If its true that we want Dempsey in and we want Carroll out, then its a good deal. If either isnt true then its not.
Personally I think Rodgers would settle on such a deal. There's good value for money and he is trading off a static player for a more mobile option that fits his master plan + he gets an extra 9M for his kitty.

Can someone explain why people are in favour of signing a slightly above average player who at ages 27 to 29 has had the best period of his career?

This is Robbie Keane, Stewart Downing style waste on a smaller scale about to happen. And he'll block the progress of Sterling. I'd be okay if it was a Bellamy style deal but 8 or 9m for him is nuts.

Don't forget that there's always a chance we can bump up their opening offer by a couple of million or so.

PS. I can't be the only one to have noticed that with his dark complexion and moody expression, Dempsey looks rather like a muslamic terrorist.

This, in a nutshell.

We are not buying or signing or loaning Dempsey. It can't be true. Especially not on the expense of Carroll and NEVER to a prize of 9M.

Get real guys this has got to be lies and nothing but damned lies.

If it was 4-6 million, I'd be happy - good squad player etc. But 9-10 million? It sounds like a poor move.

Who's to say the next 2 or 3 years wont be even better for him?

Ross has his graphs on the chalk board and his ruler at the ready, players at their peak are never a good proposition, appaz. Perhaps we shouldn't have bothered with Gary Mac, maybe United shouldn't have bothered with Teddy.

I wouldnt bet on anything more than one more decent season from him. He's going to decline, by how much is the question.

What'll happen is people will say he, didnt settle /couldn't handle the pressure or expectations at a big club, and that's why he didn't reproduce his form- which for the record will be bollocks.

Average type players like Dempsey regularly have a roughly three year window in which they perform above their normal level before coming back to earth. Buying a player who is arguably towards the end of that window is the kind of decision making that took us from being a regular CL team to a mid table one. Despite having superior resources to some clubs above us

I can't help but agree with Ross on this one. I think it's silly to spunk 9 million on a player in the twilight of his career. If he was a free transfer I'd be fucking made up but the money could be invested better elsewhere on player who could perform at a similar level for a longer period of time and then still have a resale value.

After flapping his gums about how very few players in the world have what it takes, he simply cannot go and sign Clint Dempsey. At the very least if he had any shame he'd apologise to the fans during the unveiling.

Average players having a 3 year (or so) period of good form in their careers is an interesting theory. How closely has it been investigated? Is it common enough to make it worthwhile planning a transfer strategy around, I wonder? Perhaps we should be looking to buy as squad fillers average pros of the right age (presumably around 25, so they're old enough to be firmly established as nothing special, and therefore cheap), enjoy their rich years and then sell at a profit at 28 or 29.

One possible positive about Dempsey is that he's only been playing professionally for 8 years, so might well have a couple more good years left than you'd usually expect. I think, like any signing, the wisdom depends on the price. £4-6m I'd see as acceptable, anything more is likely to be a waste.
