Clint Dempsey

Talksport saying Adam could be involved in the deal. Its Talksport though.
We were trying to do a swap with little or no cash changing hands, but Chas doesn't want to go South and is talking to the Barcodes. Allegedly, Ross.

Ross has his graphs on the chalk board and his ruler at the ready, players at their peak are never a good proposition, appaz. Perhaps we shouldn't have bothered with Gary Mac, maybe United shouldn't have bothered with Teddy.
Gary Mac was on a free, and Sheringham was some 3 million, and both were classy footballers. The price mooted for Dempsey is way higher, and he's more a hard-working journeyman, who's just coming off of the season of his career.

Sheringham was 31. Dempsey has playef for 2 clubs his entire career. Averaged 6/7 goals pr season until the last 2 years were he has really hit the back of the net.

He's got 1 year left on his contract, and we probably wont pay more than 6 mill for him. Which is a good deal.
Now, I can think of many more interesting signings. But he gives you mobility, skill, finishing, versatility and a pressing game. He's also extremely good at making runs into the box and has a Cahill spring in his leap and timing.

I'm ok with this signing if we sign one more flair player with a bit more pace and trickery aswell.

Th age thing is bollocks though. He's 29 and will be 30 at the end of the season. For a decent fee this will be a good investment. He's not a player that relies on his pace either and doesnt seem to have a bad history with injuries.

If it's Adam & a couple of million I'd be happy enough. He'll do us for a season or two & can play as a wrong forward or centre forward which is where we need cover, with he & borini plus Carroll, suarez &the option of Gerrard we should be covered.

i can see cole being thrown in the mix - going back to london - either way if it small money + either adam or cole than that is a good deal.

Would be better if we were getting Dembele rather than Dempsey. No way is Clint worth 8/9m.

I'd also like to see us linked with Sessegnon at Sunderland. He really impressed me last season.

As Ross has said, if we buy Dempsey, we're paying for someone who is at the crest of their wave and I'm not convinced is actually good enough in any event. Good goal scoring record last season but we of all people must have learned not to buy someone on the strength of one good season.

I like Dembele. He's excellent at carrying the ball. Yossi was also quite good at carrying the ball into the final third and we've missed that at times. Wouldn't mind Dembele playing for us.

I'm not pushed on Clint either way. Happy to have him on board if the fee wasn't too excessive but won't be sad of the deal falls through.

I like the way you can't say Dembele without sounding like you're taking the piss out of a Jamican accent.

I don't care how old he is, I rate Bellamy and I don't think it's worth losing him for 2m. Extend or let him go for free next season (unless he wants to leave that is).

I like Bellamy as well and wouldn't have a problem with him staying, but he faded quite markedly as last season went on. Given also that we got him on a free, a £2 mill.deal would be excellent business IMO.

I don't get the valuation of Carroll in this thread at all BTW. People saying 15M is a good deal and 20M is brilliant ? This is a 21 yr old who finished last season impressively and also looked damned good for England. The fact that he struggled to find form after injury, and to fit into our style of play, doesn't make him a shite player, just one unsuited to certain teams. Are 21 yr old England centre forwards worth so little now ? I thought the 'English Factor' added to someone's value not diminished it.

There's your answer. He's not a bad player at all for the right team. Problem is none of those teams have any money.

Add to that van Bommel, Seedorf, Nesta, Zambrotta, Gattuso, Inzaghi, Oddo, Aquilani, Maxi Lopez (loan returns) off the wage bill.

When I hear the likes of Chelsea, Man U, and even Spurs all fighting for hot shot young players from Brazil and we are not competing for any of these types of players - it kind of worries me how far we have moved down.

The upside is that now when we get 5th we'll be happy enough and think we had a good season .

It'll be ok.

We've got Stewart Downing, remember ?

LIVERPOOL’S American owners have given the nod for boss Brendan Rodgers to swoop for Clint Dempsey.

John W Henry and Tom Werner would love Rodgers to add Texas-born Dempsey to a revamped attacking set-up – alongside Luis Suarez and new £10.5m hitman Fabio Borini.

And that means the end at Anfield for £35m hitman Andy Carroll – who will discover he has no Kop future in a face-to-face meeting with Rodgers.

Carroll, along with his England team-mates Steven Gerrard, Glen Johnson, Stewart Downing, Jordan Henderson and Martin Kelly, will link up with the rest of the Liverpool squad in Boston a week tomorrow as they start a pre-season tour of North America.

And once they touch down, Rodgers will tell Carroll that he doesn’t fit into his plans.
Carroll’s first reaction will be to fight for his place.

But after making a strong case for a regular England spot with his performances at Euro 2012, Carroll won’t want to be frozen out of club football for too long.

That’s why Fulham will hope he’ll consider a switch to Craven Cottage in place of Dempsey, with a 12-month loan a strong possibility.

Fulham want Liverpool to cough up £10m for Dempsey, 29, who has 12 months left on his contract. But Rodgers is confident that he can get his man for £8m.

I really hope we don't pay £8m for Dempsey. I reckon a good rule of thumb is that your first choice players should cost, at the outside, about £1.5m a year in net transfer fees. Being generous and assuming we'd get 4 decent years from him, £6m should be the limit of our valuation, and even then that's bending over backwards considering he's not all that great and his contract situation. It'd be a different story if he was going to seriously improve our chances of finishing top 4, but that's pretty hard to believe.
