Champions League Games

Worth it for the prestige and the pride of accomplishment? Definitely.

Financially though, not really. The winner gets 10.5m, the losing finalist gets 6.5m. If they were to play Curtois and win it, they'd end up just 1m richer than not playing him at all and losing. If they play him and lose, they'll end up with just 3.5m to take home.

Would they stand a better chance of winning it if they play him though?

Maybe the loan contract have some extta payout clauses like if they win la liga and cl they have to pay a huge sum... their manager is over the moon and their ceo is scratching his eyes 🙂

They should, but the other question is what sort of mindset Curtois would have if he played. Would he be conflicted, for example? It's one thing to expect them to be professional about it, but we're not him, so it's hard to predict what sort of performance he'll put in.

Anyway, I'd love to see Atletico Madrid put Chelsea out in the semis with a 2nd rate keeper. 🙂

Similar situation to the lad that agreed to Join Bayern from Dortmund last jan before their champs league final and mysteriously became injured the week of the final. Gotze was it?

I have a better idea. Atletico beat Real and Bayern beat Chelsea. Then they don't have to worry about it. Simple

Well, their second choice keeper is Dani Aranzubia, who was a starter at Bilbao and Deportivo for many years, and at one time, considered the best young keeper in Spain. I think he'll be a fairly handy replacement for Courtois.

It must just be me but I don't really like Atletico Madrid!

Admire what they've achieved and think Simeone is a brilliant coach but for some reason (probably supporting Barca in that league) I can't root for them.

I spent a month over there at the end of last year (Valencia/Barcelona) and will be spending a lot more in the future (love both cities). However Valencians are mad keen on supporting Atleti to the the title over Real/Barca. Watching their matches in restaurant & cafes Atleti's goals are celebrated as if their own. I imagine it's like this all over Spain, the areas of Catalonia and Madrid apart. Neither Real nor Barca are well-loved.

Uefa say that Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, who is on loan from Chelsea, will be eligible to face his parent club if they meet in the Champions League semi-finals or final.
Under the terms of the deal that took Courtois to Spain, Atletico would have had to hand over a sizable fee for the Belgium star to play against the Blues but Uefa have rejected that idea.

The integrity of sporting competition is a fundamental principle for UEFA.
Both the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations contain clear provisions which strictly forbid any club to exert, or attempt to exert, any influence whatsoever over the players that another club may (or may not) field in a match.
It follows that any provision in a private contract between clubs which might function in such a way as to influence who a club fields in a match is null, void and unenforceable so far as UEFA is concerned.
Furthermore, any attempt to enforce such a provision would be a clear violation of both the UEFA Champions League and the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations and would therefore be sanctioned accordingly.

Good, I understand it in leagues but for me there's a huge difference in the knockout stage of such a big competition. Plus the guy has been there for years, he almost certainly feels more an Athletico player than a Chelsea and it's incredibly harsh to price a player out of the biggest match of his career to date.

Hope they play Chelsea and beat them now, fucking loaning good players here there and everywhere it's about time it came back on them.

Apparently they can't have two semi finals in Madrid on Tuesday & Wednesday.

Dates may be changed or one of the ties switched.

That could have big impact on us, either the match moved to the Saturday or something else.

We could do this in 2004 - 2005 with a flimsy squad, and go on to win the thing:

Apr 27 FT Chelsea 0-0 Liverpool UEFA Champions League (Semi-finals)
Apr 30 FT Liverpool 1-1 Middlesbrough Premier League
May 3 FT Liverpool 1-0 Chelsea UEFA Champions League (Semi-finals)

So why the fuck can't they even try without moaning?

So, will courtois play or not then

They can play him. However they were hoping to get him back for another season on loan, and playing him might not be the best way to get in Chelsea's good books....
