We're linked with him today, and I for one wouldn't be against it. He has taken some massive steps forward the last few seasons.

Liverpool join Carlton Cole's suitors: West Ham braced for January Kop raid
By Matt Barlow

Cole has been targeted for a move to the Kop
Liverpool are among the clubs planning a raid on West Ham to sign Carlton Cole in January.
Cole's outstanding form has generated interest from a number of teams at home and abroad, all of them encouraged by the financial problems at Upton Park.
The Hammers fought off bids for their top players in the summer but are braced for more pressure when the transfer market opens again.
Cole, who is 26 on Thursday, has scored six times in 11 Premier League games this season, including one against Liverpool in September when Rafa Benitez was impressed with his all round performance.
The former Chelsea striker has made enormous progress in the last 12 months, with Gianfranco Zola helping to transform his great power and huge potential into consistent form.
He has played in four England games this season, taking his total of caps to six, although a hamstring injury has ruled him out of the squad for Saturday's friendly against Brazil.
Cole believes he would have been fit for the game in Qatar but he missed West Ham's home defeat to Everton on Sunday and Fabio Capello operates a strict policy whereby he will not call up a player if he was not fit enough to take part his final club match before international duty.
Cole should be back to lead the line for his club in the vital Premier League game at Hull, a week on Saturday but his days in the claret and blue of the Hammers may be numbered.
Instrumental: Cole has emerged as a major figure at West Ham
Benitez is anxious to boost his firepower. With Fernando Torres and Steven Gerrard struggling through injuries, the manager has been forced to rely more heavily than expected on back-up strikers David Ngog and Andriy Voronin but Barcelona's interest in Javier Mascherano is a possible fund raiser. Liverpool have told the Catalans they want £38m for the Argentine midfielder.
This time last year Benitez was trying to lure Emile Heskey back to Anfield but lost out when Aston Villa paid Wigan £3.5m for the England centre forward in January.
Heskey has failed to command a regular place at Villa since his transfer but Cole, who signed a contract tying him to Upton Park until 2013, is having the best year of his career and admits the change has been triggered by improvements in his attitude, often questioned during his younger years.
Pressure: Fernando Torres is relied upon for Liverpool's goals
In the last 12 months Cole has scored 13 goals in 27 Premier League games and it has not gone unnoticed. Arsenal are interested and there are Spanish clubs also watching him, which all means West Ham look set for another uncomfortable transfer window.
The Hammers have become accustomed to fighting off clubs interested in their best players since their former owner Bjorgolfur Gudmundsson was plunged into crisis and forced to hand the club over to Icelandic bank Straumur.
They have worked hard to offset the big losses made during Gudmundsson's ownership but the unexpected threat of relegation after a disappointing start to the season will increase the pressure to raise more money from sales if a new owner cannot be found quickly.
Tough decisions: Gianfranco Zola may have to sell in January
West Ham were pleased to retain the likes of Cole, Rob Green, Matthew Upson, Scott Parker, Jack Collison and Mark Noble in the summer but they sold defender James Collins to Aston Villa for £6m to fund team strengthening in other positions.
Last January, Craig Bellamy and Matthew Etherington were sold and Zola's first team squad has been cut to trim back the wage bill and supplemented with loan signings and promising youngsters like James Tomkins, Zavon Hines and Junior Stanislas.
The Hammers will be targeted again by those managers keen to reinforce their squads in mid-season, simply because they are one of the clubs who may be forced to sell. Sunderland, having lost Craig Gordon with a broken arm, have an eye on West Ham's England goalkeeper Green.

you have to feel for Zola, they must have a chance of going down this year.

Is he any better as a striker than Kuyt?

I still cry when I think of how Arshavin could have linked up with Torres if we had got him last January.

No thanks.

I remember watching West Ham vs Manc Utd last season when Cole was supposedly in great form. Lets just say he was the mancs best centre half on the day.

Id prefer us to sign someone with less brute and more footballing talent if we do actually have any pennies to spend please.

I guess the report could be true as Rafa could well have a bit of a hard on for him because he can play the lone striker role.

Just did a forum search on Arshavin just to remind myself what the general conscensus was when Arshavin was at Zenit.. hindsight and all that, i know.. but it does make for interesting reading seeing how some wrote him off as a 1 season wonder who'd never make it in the *big bad* premier league. If you've got pace and great technique in this league, you always stand a good chance of making it. Just a shame for us Rafa has a penchant for slow players and/or players with poor technique.

We have a splendid statistic so far bringing in former Chelsea-rejects.

I wouldn't mind it.

I certainly wanted Arshavin. Not only had I been impressed with what I'd seen of him, but I also took notice when Hiddink called him the most intelligent footballer he's ever worked with.

I'd sooner sign Cole than Heskey, let alone McCarthy, but I can't see it happening. He'll cost too much, and he won't want to be anybody's understudy in any case.

Pains me so much we never went in for Arshavin. The fact we were selling Keane last Jan, we would have only had to cough up a few mill extra to get him in.

I think he'd be a great buy and I've been completely won over by him over the last 6 months.

As to what he'll cost I'm not sure, £15-16M I reckon, but I can't see a bidding war erupting for him;

Chelsea won't want him
He's not an Arsenal player and they've got too many attacking players as it is.
United - have Berbatov playing a similar role
Villa - Two target men already
Spurs - Too many strikers
City - Ditto

And to those who say he won't start enough games, I'm sorry but here it is: Torres is injury prone. It may be the first time he's been labelled it, I dunno, but it's true. Had Cole been here this year and last he would have started 30-40 Prem games by now. We can guarantee good strikers games.

Ive said it for years but if we are spending big money on an english striker outside the top 4 we should be spending it on Defoe.

I think we missed our chance when he left Spurs for £9M.

Which was an absolute steal.

He played well against us this season when Carra was in his poor rut of form and Skrtel looked no better.

But Purslow has already said that there is little chance of any major signings in the Jan window during his recent telephone interview on Radio 5live. So this sounds like hack speculation rather than a credible source.

I'd have him for the right price (£5/6m) but anymore than that would be risky considering his injury record and the fact that he's a back up and no more. Plus he harbours England desires, would he come here to be back up to Torres? (Crouch didn't want that either).

£5-6M is dream land stuff, mate.

And as we're seeing, being 'back up to Torres' seems to get you more games than the man himself.

I would expect him to be valued about £15-20 million. Which is way out of our price range. Good player who is finding his feet eventually.

Than again

£15-£20m just might help us finish in the top four, the failure to do so would be far greater than that

regards

Zola would not want to lose his best player. Without him they'll go down. I would take a punt on Benni McCarthy at £3 million. He is a proven goalscorer and would want to prove his worth for WC2010. He is better than Voronin and Babel plus would be available til the end of the season.

Its still difficult to accept that Carlton Cole is any good, but it does look as though he is.

If we had the money for him then I certainly wouldn't be against it. As we have become used to the idea that we are totally skint and can afford noone then I certainly won't be complaining about paying too much for someone to fill a position that we need to have filled. It would come as a rather pleasant surprise if anything!

In reality though I doubt we are really in for him and I doubt West Ham will let him go at this stage. They have no reason to do so and he has no reason to go really. With the World Cup around the corner the only move that would improve his chances of starting for England is a move to United, and I can't see that happening. As it is he is getting all the first team football he needs.

If we buy anyone it'll be someone on the cheap or someone on loan. But I suspect it will be neither.

Does Zenden count mate?

Cole has come on leaps and bounds, but you have to think, if we fork out the prices mentioned for him, as a quick fix, surely we can do better for that price? I get what Vlad said regarding helping us get in the CL, but what if we don't? What if we do? We're still stuck with a striker we've just signed for big money because of the circumstances and the need for back up, and him being the only one possibly available, while stuck in a Summer with a need for vast improvement.

We're short of money as it is, if we pay £15m for Cole and he is even a marginal success, we're stuck in the potential predicament of having to go for someone better 6 months down the line, possibly without the money to do so.

It's big money for someone like him, for a club that's just failed to spend that much net in the Summer too.

If he came to Liverpool he would be typical of the player's Rafa has bought. Does well for a non-high profile club like West Ham, then misses chance after chance at a high profile club like Liverpool, becomes a failure, is shown the door.

you mean like johnson from pompy?

7-8 million, and one might think about it. 15 fucking million? We can do a hell lot better.

For starters, can't we cut short Nemeth's loan and plunge him back here. I hear he's been doing pretty well in Greece?

Agree about the price, and I had hoped that the kind of point you make in your second para.would persuade Crouchy to stay, but he wasn't having it and I doubt Cole would either, especially given that he's now in the England squad and in with a chance of going to S.Africa.

Manager Rafael Benitez will try and solve Liverpool's striker crisis by making a £12m move for West Ham's Carlton Cole in January

West Ham would have to be *really* desperate for instant cash to sell him for £12m and risk going down, which would cost them a lot more.
