A bit slow, a bit ponderous, odd decision making at times, not much vision, a bit indisciplined tactically and positionally, not much awareness, doesn't seem to read the game. Not a DM, not a box to box all-action player, not a playmaker. Doesn't seem to have much of an eye for goal.
I'm not sure what he actually is.
I appreciate he's young and will hopefully improve, but he really doesn't look like the future of our midfield.

Unless there's some kind of quantum shift in almost every aspect of his current ability - which you have listed in detail above - then he should have no future at the club.

He's a big lad, and can look impressive when he builds up a head of steam and trundles forward, but he has no clue what to do with the ball.

Wow, no future at all?

Some indictment that.

It's madness - you see poor tactical awareness, poor positional play and a general lack of brains.

I see a 21 year old who's built like a tank, has excellent technical ability on the ball, and is a fighter - that's potentially a top class midfield enforcer.

He's played more minutes than any other player this season.

Young players take time to develop. Please fuck off with this knee jerk nonsense.

I think he could do with a rest, which should happen when Henderson comes back. There's talent there that will take time to develop, way too early to be writing him off.

More than anything it's his mentality that irks me. We seem to have moved on from finding Brazilians who can't hit the ball properly to finding Germans who lack discipline. Maybe we're trying to disprove stereotypes, but Emre doesn't seem like the German players who've been so intimidatingly cool and clinical at all levels. He's always getting pulled out of position, he often needlessly winds up referees and he often seems the most likely player to get two yellow cards in a game out of sheer stupidity. I know he's young and still learning, but he's strangely immature for a player who's been at two top German clubs and captained at international level. He really needs to sort himself out mentally as well as physically.

Well, our Coutinho has certainly learnt to hit the ball now! So hopefully Can will learn discipline in due time.

I just think CM is a very challenging position to learn to play in, and this is really the first time he's had a sustained run in that position. I have no doubt he will improve with time.

No.

As to what kind of player he is, his style and physique lends himself to be an enforcer in the mould of Vieira, Keane, Essien.

Worth remembering that at the age of 21, Keane was still at Nottingham Forest, Essien was at Bastia and Vieira was just breaking into the first team at Arsenal.

It's difficult to predict how good he'll end up being, but it's stupid to write him off or start comparing him to Plessis (as someone did in the post match thread). FFS!

I think his problem is, he doesn't really know what his best position is..

Being utility player has done him more harm than good..

He needs his best position finding, and his game nurtured around that...

There is clear potential..

The major issue with Can for me is, as I mentioned in the Post Match thread, he seems to be one paced (read: slow) in his decision making, awareness and his actions. That doesn't bode well for the future. A bright young thing should be alert and his reactions fast, even if they are wrong. I'm not sure how it's possible to rectify those discrepancies.

This. So much this. Can will be excellent if we just give him time to develop. I can imagine Klopp rates him highely.

He has played something like over 50 games already in 2015. It's quite natural that he'll suffer when playing so many games.
I thought he was excellent against Rubin and obviously looked like he needed a rest yesterday. But thats difficult when the only other option is Allen.

We seem to give young players very little time to develop from a fans point of view. Markovic, Ibe, Origi, Moreno. Its the same for nearly every player.
Patience. We need a bit of that.

Yeah to be fair to Can, he is a young player and started the midweek game, so there are some excuses that can be made for him. What excuse does Lucas have? As Vlad said in another thread not much is being made of his shit performance. Crystal Palace made our midfield look pedestrian and created so many chances...even if you dont criticize the experienced defensive midfielder who was wearing the Captains armband, at least try not to blatantly lie by saying " He had a decent game" etc....its pathetic.

Can't believe nobody has mentioned his hair yet.

One day the rest of him will catch up with it's bossness.

Give him time. We have a new manager that is trying to learn our players a new way to play. It takes time. How many games have he played in midfield for us?

I will judge him after this season. When it comes down to Lucas he is our best midfielder by far but that only shows how shit our other midfielders are. I would only keep Lucas, Can and Rossiter of our midfielders right now. I may change my mind after this season when the players have had a chance to lean the Klopp system.

Lucas is the player Klopp use as his midfield brain. He is the one he gives instructions to when he want to change something on the pitch.

Hes shite yeah.

Hes so very average at every single thing he does. Hes played every game so far this season and we the fans have only given him two 3rd places in our motm votes. They were probably generous too.

There is no threat, his passing is poor, his decision making is terrible, his shooting is rubbish, his marking is wank, he excels at absolutely nothing.
He is utterly unnoticable unless he is doing something clot headed.

Hes a kid and might get better. But its doubtful.

Need to bring this thread back up. I think he has been going from strength to strength since deputising for Henderson when he got injured.

Will you honestly say you will drop him when Henderson is fit?

Love the way he boss the midfield. He is quicker then he looks and plays with his heart on his sleeves. A proper German midfielder is there ever is one. To top it up, he is also consistently sending a couple of Gerrard-esque passes a game. Most improved player for me.

Bit of an enigma.
Does some incredible stuff but also lets himself down with basic stuff.
Still young though, and he obviously has the potential.

No vision the op said, well the amazing pass for Sturridge last night and that backheel against City showed he nust be improving on that front!
