Not entirely related but still:

LAUDRUP TO ENGLAND
My main question is about your Revista friend Michael Laudrup, who is, along with Pep Guardiola, my idol in modern football management. Has he been contacted by any clubs to return to coaching for next season? And i would also like to know your opinion on the current crisis at Liverpool, and is it possible that Liverpool will make any moves towards David Villa or maybe some Bilbao players in the summer?Barry McFeely

GUILLEM SAYS: He is in contact with clubs and he is in the position to be able to choose which clubs he wants to go to. I think he would be interested in a Premier League team that has a project, defends good football and is based on a similar football philosophy.

Bad signings have cost Liverpool and the manager needs to offer new answers to the problems because far too often his selection is confusing. The players have been disappointing and sometimes it is very easy to hide behind a manager in crisis. But I thinks the club needs new young blood at all levels and if the club were brave enough to do that, with or without Kenny, the future can be bright. It can be done with Kenny, but then the manager will have to change some of his ways (in relation to the academy, tactical work, with the press) to get again everybody on board. Also they need to sign better - specially players with pace and a goal-scorer.

Has Balague ever said anything at least remotely relevant and interesting after Benitez got sacked? I wish he'd shut up

liverpool are no where near manu with regards to squad depth. we lost agger and lucas and dropped down the table, manu could lose the equivalent players and cope much better than we have.

I also agree with mark that we are much better than the table suggests, there have been far too many games where we didn't get what our performances deserves. examples are city, manu, arsenal at home and stoke away. we need to learn to clinical because in a lot of games we've created more than enough chances to win by half time. difficult to know if in the summer we can fix enough of our problems to challenge for CL as I suggest the likes of chelsea, arsenal and spurs will improve further.

i would argue that ultimately the table is a true reflection of your performances and where you stand

Laudrup is a good shout though

bloody hell, i might actually agree with le chacal here. not sure if he would be right for the club. did he do well in spain with getafe? someone enlighten me with a bucket load of stats to prove me wrong

It's irrelevant what his stats are or how he got on in Spain,he will be driven out after 12 months unless he delivers top 4 and F.a cup in his first season.
And the cycle will go on forever.

So is it win or bust at the weekend for Kenny? Seems to me more are coming round to the idea that it's best he leaves in the summer.

Think he'll step down regardless. He puts the club first in everything he does, and he must surley see that things arent working.

Would be ace to finish it off with an FA cup win though.

You know how I piss people off by saying shit like Kenny should go despite an Fa cup win?
Well, Kenny should go despite an Fa cup win.

Personally I think he should be given the time to correct any mistakes he might have made this year.

Sure as The Lying Rag rising is this thread appearing after every draw or loss.

I know. We really should just ignore the fact that he keeps losing matches. Cos it's annoying you.

What are the expectations of Kenny's replacement? If he finishes 7-8th, with no cups, and plays brilliant footy - will we keep him? If he wins pointless trophies and finishes 5th, will we keep him? What is minimum requirement for next year?

1. Coherent and consistent tactics/philosophy
2. Intelligent purchases in the transfer market based on such philosophy
3. CL qualification

A trophy would be a bonus, but the most important thing for me is to see evidence of progress towards challenging for the title 2-3 years from now.

Tbh dmishra, I'd accept no CL qualification. 1& 2 should lead us to it eventually and the competition is ridiculous for top 4.

I'm going to fucking cry if we spend another year without CL footy.

I should probably seek counseling for acceptance issues though.

Which of 1,2,3 is most critical? If say you only get 2 but 1 and 3 are poor, fire him?

If we do 1, but the results are still poor and we look no closer to challenging in 2-3 years, fire him?

Just want to see what exactly we're expecting ...

For me:

Consistent tactics
Obvious Plan B
Good signings (I'd accept 60% success rate)

The way we play means nothing to. Me as long as we win. I'd rather win scrappy than lose dominant.

Aesthetics can come when we've built confidence in the squad. The mark of champions is to win ugly.

Like Fabio says, if we ensure 1 and 2, it's difficult to imagine 3 won't follow sooner rather than later.

I could accept 5th provided the points deficit from the top is greatly reduced, and we play coherently and consistently throughout the season. I want us to take forward steps, not stumble around sideways, with the same set of problems that we have today. No one's going to come in and suddenly make us title challengers next season. But it's certainly possible to have someone come-in and intelligently assess the issues plaguing the entire footballing ethos of this club, and work on them systematically. If I see consistent evidence of that, I'd be happy to persist with such manager for a while.

I expected it so am I surprised or annoyed?

Exactly. And when we criticise the fact, we're deemed to be up Kenny's arse. Moo and a few others only come crawling out the woodwork post defeat. Would be nice to see them post every now and then when we have a win to celebrate, without making a point of reminding us we got beat the week before.
