Rodgers: 'It will take time"

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers praised the "desire and commitment" of his side following their 1-0 Europa League third qualifying round first leg win over Gomel.

"It will take time until Liverpool start playing the way Swansea did last season (tactically),'' he said. "Actually the way you play depends on the players you have. As for today I saw two things which were very important for me, I saw desire and commitment. I am very grateful to my players for a good game.

"Obviously it was a serious test of the players' fitness and I am really happy with the result. This was my first competitive game in charge of Liverpool and for me it didn't really matter whether the game was played in Belarus or Brazil as I am really honoured to manage this side.''

However his first match at the helm did not go all Liverpool's way. The hosts, who are halfway through their domestic campaign, dominated the majority of the game and were it not for poor finishing would have emerged victorious.

Rodgers continued: "This game was a great test for us at this point of the season. Today we saw that Gomel is a very good club which is already into the season. Their tactical idea was to defend and counter-attack so it was difficult for us to find the open spaces in the first half but at half-time I told my players to be patient and that the chances would come.
"After the first 45 minutes I also changed the structure of the midfield and Steven Gerrard started to play a bit lower than the other two central midfielders. I am glad that Stewart scored the goal as we put him on that side to come in and shoot. It was a great shot.''
On the other flank, Joe Cole, who spent last season on loan at Lille, lasted just 23 minutes before picking what looked like a hamstring injury. Glen Johnson was also replaced a minute into the second half, but Rodgers was quick to downplay any injury fears.
"Joe just felt his hamstring a little bit," Rodgers said. "I don't think it is totally pulled and it was just a little bit of tightness so we had to take him off. It disrupted our plans a little bit but it was better to have him come off rather than risk injury."
"The substitution of Glen was planned and as for Joe the injury is not serious and more of a precaution,'' the 39-year-old added.

Anyone expecting miracles with our opening fixtures is nuts.

If it was that easy to get a team playing this style of football everyone would be playing it.

Same old same old mantra. Didn't Rafa, Roy and Kenny said the same?

And they all, well Rafa and Kenny, had us playing good football at times and both won trophies eventually. What's your point? What do you want him to say?

I'm surprised some of our more seasoned posters are posting such fickle reasoning at the minute, the match thread is littered with it. It's short sighted, impatient and generally unfair. What did you expect, an overnight miracle?

I've come to expect it from the usual posters, Hmmmm, Modo, Gary etc, but Macca, Y1....... come on lads.

No matter whom we are going to bring in, players and managers, Rome will never be built in a day.

He changed things in the second half. He acted and he improved things. That's what you want to see.
That alone installs me with faith in him.

For all the time I've got for Rafa and Kenny, they did seem to resemble a deer caught in the headlights at times when their initial game plan didn't work out.

Istanbul excepted.

Europa League games are always shite. Always. Combine with that the first competitive game of the season, first competitive game for manager and all that.

Oh and we won and all. (Granted we didn't deserve it).

Yeah, welcome Eric.

BTW even the fact that we didn't deserve the win can be seen as encouraging. Teams that win titles always have to win their quota of games in which they didn't deserve it. It's an art we badly need to rediscover.

Welcome to the site Eric, and by judging from your T-shirt you'll have no difficulties fitting right in... 😉

Nope. Every manager says the same. Time. Some were given, like Rafa & Gerard but some like Roy & Kenny were not accorded the same privileges. So it is the same old mantra from Brendan and I wait and see whether he will give given time or not. I would say it depends on results and positions.

edit: but I do hope he will be given at least 3 years

That's a different view point to how it came across mate, I thought you were just saying, different manager, same old shit, based on his ability. I don't know what to expect if I'm honest, but I share your view that we need stability and that requires patience. Whether he get's it remains to be seen. I just hope he's not overawed by the job and the expectancy, because as we've seen, managers and players crumble under it.

It takes a tough soul.

True. It is tough and we need a good run by a manager and his team for a good period of time. Meanwhile I hope our mid table position (which I foresee for now. - edit - and hopefully not a relegation battle) will not cause panic and pitch forks and fire brands being raised from the crowd.

I don't even want to start on the 'back to basics' stuff and hoping we start to beat the shit teams with good football, because it was the idea with Roy and then Kenny. A big plus for me will be if he shakes off the shackles that dogged Rafa and Kenny - being stubborn, fucking around with the team constantly and not being bold enough to recognise when things aren't going well for a team or an individual player.

I know Jose is an easy example, but like that time he made three subs at half time and changed the game, that's what I want to see, that kind of positive thinking.

Absolutely. It's amazing that some managers see early subs as a sign of weakness, that they are reluctant to admit they got the inital line up wrong. It takes confidence and guts to see that football is a game of infinite variables and sometimes changes are needed before a pre-conceived 'optimum' time. Jose is a good example because he's not afraid to do what's necessary at any given time, regardless of how much of the match has been played.

Too many people panicking already unnecessarily. So many of the players he hasn't had a chance to work with properly yet and it will take time for his sytem to gel. Chances are we are going to have a very average season, but i suspect we will have a lot better second half of the season. So truthfully, how many of the henderson lovers still believe he will come good???

Tiiiiiiiime ain't on your side, no it isn't.
I'm willing to give him time though, but it annoys the hell out of me that most of Kenny's signings are still around. I just don't see anything changing unless they're replaced.
So buy Allen, buy Dempsey and hopefully we'll see something different against West Brom.
