I think he will leave by his own will, either this summer or perhaps in January. Allen did play well in many of his appearances this season, but it's pretty clear his style of play suits possession-oriented teams more. Precisely because of that he can be useful for us in situations when we need to keep the ball and this is how Klopp used him, when his hand was not forced by injuries. But it's too much of a luxury to keep such a specialized role player on the bench, especially when as a club you can afford to buy and develop some of the most talented CMs of the world, players who can not only keep possession, but also give you goals, dynamism or defensive strength. Why cling to Joe Allen if you can try to find and develop a new Gerrard, Alonso or Pogba?
This summer we seem to be very much in the market for a young dynamic attack-oriented CM, with names like Dahoud and Zielinsky frequently mentioned. Let's say we buy one of them. Let's say Lucas leaves. Here is what Allen will be looking at as his competition for one of 2 or 3 CM positions, depending on Klopp's tactics:
- Emre Can has locked down his position at DM and will probably start most games when fit. Captain material.
- Henderson is the current captain, suits Klopp's pressing style to a T and the only question mark is the heel injury. If Hendo is fit, there is no way Allen would start over him.
- Milner has grown into his role as a senior player who leads by example. Will start lots of games and probably more often as a CM then a winger as the competition in attack increases with new signings.
- [the new CM signing, who will be given every chance to succeed and justify his substantial price tag]
- Grujic, will probably circulate between first team and the reserves as his adapts in his first season.
- Brannagan, who in my opinion is a superb talent and is clearly rated by Klopp. He will be determined to take any chance he gets.
- Stewart, who's been given a new contract, but still has everything to prove.
What makes it worse for Allen is that the current relative lack of balance of that midfield is working against him, because the attacking part is far more crowded than the defensive one. If Allen could play DM, he could have dislodged Stewart as a primary alternative to Can, but instead he will have to compete against 5 other players for the the more attacking CM spot. Also, I predict Klopp will play mostly with 2 rather than 3 CMs next season, as the pressing game and improved defense will allow him to field more attackers at the same time.
I don't think Klopp will push Allen out of the door – why would he? He gets injured a bit too often, but other than that he's a decent pro with clear strengths and weaknesses who can be used at times during the season for particular tactical situations. However, I wonder if Allen looks at his competition above and decides it's better to spend the peak years of his career elsewhere.
