Rafael Hernández ‏@RafaelH117 13m Catalunya Radio claims Arsenal offered €25m for Alexis Sánchez and Liverpool €35-40m. Barcelona keen on who offers more money.

LiverpoolFC News ‏@LFCTransferNRS 15m Liverpool are willing to match and raise Arsenal’s bid (25m euros) for Alexis Sanchez. (AS)

‏@LFCTikiTaka 20m Alexis would be open to a move to Anfield despite having a verbal agreement with Arsenal. Liverpool still believe they can convince him [AS]

Personally I'm bothered for the following reasons:

1. I think Sanchez is actually a very good deal at £30m. I think we'll have to pay more for an equivalent player.
2. It helps to curb the inflated fees we might encounter with £70-80m in our pocket to receive part of the fee in the form of a player.
3. There aren't actually many world class strikers out there right now, it seems to me. I struggle to think of alternative, particularly one that will happily sign for us.
4. IMO as a player Sanchez was a peculiarly good solution, in that he's primarily a striker, but also versatile, which is always good, and especially considering that it allows us the option of playing a 4-3-3 with Sturridge through the middle. As rare as top class strikers are, ones who are just as comfortable across the forward line are much rarer still.

I'm with that.

I know I'm banging the drum on this, but I'm convinced that given a free-roaming central role Sanchez would improve under Rodgers (much as Suarez did) into an absolutely lethal striker. He's young enough (25) to improve yet into a world-beater and seems to have the on-pitch desire and natural ability to do so.

30m is a snip imo.

Easy. Re not discussing him. Who thought Barca would sell him? He was always one of the players we couldnt get. Now its at least a possibility.

Fuck off arsenal

Hopefully his verbal agreement doesn't mean a thing if Barcelona want to sell to us

Sanchez have a word with Suarez he'll tell you this is a boss club but watch ya ear he may chew it off.

#fuckyouwenger

Heh, you are just a little bit.

For him to be a 'snip' at 30M, he'd pretty much have to become one of the best players around and whilst I do rate him quite a bit, I think your plans are a little bit ambitious.

As far as I was aware (might be completely wrong) he played primarily as a winger at Udinese and at Barca (I do know) that he's spent the majority of his time out on the right albeit with more freedom to come inside in keeping with the way Barca play. He also seems to play as more of a support attacker for the national team.

I understand that it's been said that he prefers to play centrally as a striker but where is the evidence that's he's suddenly going to become a 30 goal striker?

I'd need to be convinced that Sanchez wants to come. Fine player though he is, I wouldn't be interested if he regards LFC only as sloppy seconds, 'coz then he might play like that too.

Edit: just heard from one of my Juve-supporting cousins. Reports in Italy suggest Juve have given up on Sanchez and switched their attention to Iturbe.

Your just not a fan of North London are you mystic?

Ha, close, growing up on a line that goes straight into London, I've grew up with the worst of their fans (Arsenal and much more so Tottenham) however I have no problem with West Ham fans, and they're the most populous where I grew up, it just seems Arsenal and Tottenham attract a certain type of bell.

Particularly Tottenham. Biggest bunch of deluded thunder cunts I've ever had the misfortune to meet. The Hammers folk are sound enough as you said.

We just reportedly paid 25m for Lallana - in comparison 30m for the younger, more accomplished, vastly more experienced in Europe/title-winning Sanchez appears snip like to me!

I think he's pushing into that 2nd tier of top players right now, whilst playing less centrally than is ideal at Barca. Rodgers vastly improved Luis (thus turning him into a 30 goal a season striker) by building his team around a roving forward(s) model - and I think Sanchez has the same potential fit. He's lightning fast and importantly is a proper nuisance to defenders. His goalscoring record from out wide is impressive too, both at Barca and Udinese before that. He's just got quality running right through him.

Given people mention players like Muriel (who has a lot of untapped potential but has failed to realise it yet) at 25m odd, I can't see how Sanchez isn't fantastic value at that price.

Sanchez and Reus for the Luis fee and we've arguably improved the side? Don't forget Sturridge has only played up front for one full season, improvement to come there too.

I grew up in East London and can confirm 100% Mystic's opinion. West Ham fans are rough and ready but realistic and have a certain east End charm. Arsenal fans tend to be harmless dicks but Spurs fans are typically deluded self-important caaaants.

That's something of a generalisation of course...

Can, Sanchez, Reus, Lovren and a left back who isn't Bertrand, if we have to sell Suarez, that will help placate me.

Glad it's not just me guys. The problem has been exacerbated by us being linked to the same players in recent history. Although during Fabregas' time at Arsenal when all Arsenal fans were claiming how they played the best football on the planet (which excused winning sweet fa) was probably the worst.

He doesn't need to. How many 30 goal strikers has the PL had since inception (serious Q) ? If he's getting 20-25, Sturridge 20-25, a tighter defence and more goals from midfield (which I really think we will this coming season, via Sterling, Lallana, Markovic / Shaqiri, Coutinho etc.) then we have more than covered the loss of 31 goals (it'd probably be lower this season anyway since Luis would have played in fewer PL games and it's also more than possible last season was his 'career high').

The only sticking point is that you obviously can't physically replace one player with two (or more), you have to spread them across games, so essentially it's difficult to replicate that ability to singlehandedly win games, but you might become more effective via having more depth to cover fatigue, injury, bans etc. So we could potentially become more efficient as a team, rather than a decent side that's reliant on big match winners, I guess.

If we get Sanchez and spend the other £30m-£40m well on a TOP class attacker, then we'll be in good shape. If we don't.. then who knows?

True. And I also mentioned in another thread that it means when it comes time to make substitutions we won't be weakening the team by throwing players like Aspas on so I also expect us to be scoring more goals in the last 10-20 mins.

If he really wants to come here once he's accepted he's leaving Barca, then fine. If he doesn't really want to come but Barca accept our bid as the highest, then bollocks to him.

richard askam ‏@richaskam 2h Respected Spanish football expert Graham Hunter adding weight to view that Alexis Sanchez unlikely to end up at Liverpool. Rings true #lfc

barcastuff ‏@barcastuff 33m Liverpool ask 88M for Luis Suarez. They don't accept Alexis as part of the deal as they want to build new team around English players. [e3]

Seeing as that post is from 'barca stuff' which is probably Spanish based, I'm guessing the 88m is euros? Which is 70m pounds which seems a little low to me.

They're just retweeting Spanish news stories, some from questionable sources.

The bid yesterday differed from 55,7 - 72 mill £.
Some say Sanchez isnt interested, some say he hasnt made up his mind yet.

All in all the only certain thing is that Suarez wants to leave.

I think this is spot on. We paid £22M for Suarez four years ago and he was not proven in the highest leagues. And when he arrived, he was dangerous, but not lethal - missed loads and loads of opportunities and was much more selfish with the ball. Only in past 18 months has he really become one of the world's greatest players. Sanchez has the same potential, in my opinion. And, £30M today is close to the same value as £22 four years ago.
