Adem Ljajic has failed to agree a new contract with Fiorentina, so Roma joined Milan, Tottenham and Southampton with offers.
The Serbia international met with Viola directors at their headquarters on Friday afternoon, but left without securing an extension to the deal that expires in June 2014.
President Andrea Della Valle noted on Thursday that he would be sold if there was no new contract and there was “not much chance” of him staying.
Milan have long been interested in Ljajic, even though their initial €9m offer was rejected, and remain the favourites.
It was reported Atletico Madrid made a proposal, but the forward turned down that alternative.
Over the last few hours Roma have emerged as new contenders for Ljajic’s signature, as he would be a valid replacement should Erik Lamela join Tottenham for €35m.
Other options are Spurs, Southampton and Schalke 04, though the player seems eager to remain in Serie A.
According to Sky Sport Italia, Ljajic will give Fiorentina his definitive answer on Tuesday morning after their Serie A match against Catania.
Fiorentina general manager Sandro Mencucci confirms “Adem Ljajic has until Tuesday to decide” on a new contract.
The player met with the club on Friday and left without signing an extension to the current deal that expires in June 2014.
“Fiorentina have made their proposal, including a wage increase, but he has received offers from other clubs,” revealed Mencucci.
“We have given him until Tuesday to decide. If he finds a club that is willing to offer him more, then he will come and tell us. In any case, Fiorentina will be competitive.”
Fiorentina boss Vincenzo Montella blasted Adem Ljajic. “I’m fed up. I have neither the time nor the desire to wait for him.”
The striker has until Tuesday morning to either sign a contract extension or decide to find himself a new club.
Ljajic is in the squad for Monday night’s Serie A game with Catania, but it remains to be seen whether he’ll play.
“I’m fed up of this situation,” said the Coach in his Press conference.
“I think he showed something in the second half of last season, receiving in return the support of his teammates, club and Coach. I have neither the time nor the desire to wait for him, seeing as he’s not calm and focused on his work.”
The fans protested against Ljajic during training on Saturday and the situation is increasingly tense.
“The fans can do what they want to, just like Adem. I don’t think a few jeers can condition a player or a club. At times, jeers are a sign of interest...
Fiorentina warned they will “only sell Adem Ljajic to a club that behaves correctly with us and within the sporting rules.”
The Viola had already released a statement earlier this month blasting Milan for what they claimed was an illegal approach towards their player.
Ljajic’s contract expires in June 2014 and he has been given until Tuesday morning to accept a renewal or be sold.
“If Adem does want to go, we’ll only sell him to a club that behaves correctly with us and within the sporting rules, which means speaking to the club before the player,” general manager Sandro Mencucci told the Gazzetta dello Sport.
“He will not remain here without signing a renewal, as that would not be right. We offered him an excellent contract. If he considers it to be adequate, then that’s fine. If not, he will leave.
“Whatever happens, it will be a success for Fiorentina. If he remains, and I am optimistic he will, then we’ll have a strong team. If he goes, then we will sell for a suitable price, as there are many teams tracking Ljajic.
“Everyone has spoken to the player and there’s no need to say anything else. The final decision is only down to Adem.”
While Milan have been most consistently linked with the Serbia international, other clubs interested include Roma, Tottenham, Southampton and Atletico Madrid.
