A very serious Mata

[article=http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/teams/manchester-united/10586138/Juan-Mata-signing-from-Chelsea-would-do-nothing-to-solve-Manchester-Uniteds-more-pressing-concerns.html]David Moyes will begin the rebuilding of Manchester United by working from the roof down if he pursues his interest in Juan Mata with a bid for the Chelsea midfielder.

Then again, if the roof is showing signs of caving in, it may not be the worst place to start in terms of solving one of the many problems he has inherited – and created – since succeeding Sir Alex Ferguson as manager at Old Trafford.

But with Moyes understood to be torn over whether to make a formal offer for the Spaniard – a player he rates highly – the fact that Mata is even on United’s radar this month hints at the lack of a coherent acquisition strategy at the club.

Ever since he began his job at United last summer, Moyes and senior figures have made it clear that two positions had been identified as priority areas for strengthening.

The first was central midfield, the other being left-back.

Despite adding Marouane Fellaini to the squad with a last minute £27.5 million deal in August, midfield remains an area of concern, while the left-back problem continues to be unresolved following failed bids for Leighton Baines and an aborted loan move for Real Madrid’s Fabio Coentrao at the end of the summer window.

Moyes has complained of a lack of time to make key additions last summer, but he had two months and should have pushed earlier and harder to ensure that new blood was secured.

Fantasy attempts to sign Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale came to nothing, while United were led down the garden path by Cesc Fabregas during a futile two-month attempt to sign the Barcelona player.

Meanwhile, with Moyes talking of the January window being a difficult one in which to do business, the wheels have turned slowly as the hunt for a new left-back and central midfield has made little or no progress.

Chelsea’s £21m move for Benfica’s Nemanja Matic suggests that deals can be done during this window, but with United struggling to secure their priorities, it now appears as though they are prepared to indulge in some retail therapy by pursuing a luxury they do not really need.

Clearly, Mata’s talents will add to the creativity problems that have dogged United this season. He displayed those last term during an outstanding campaign at Stamford Bridge.

But with Jose Mourinho sceptical of Mata’s work-rate and contribution at the highest level, will he really be able to overcome those doubts at United?

Moyes has mirrored Mourinho’s doubts over Mata with similar concerns as to the worth of Shinji Kagawa, the Japanese midfielder, while Wilfried Zaha’s maverick talents are now deemed only good enough to warrant a place on the substitutes’ bench for the reserves.

Mata is a better player than both Kagawa and Zaha, but where would he fit in at United when Moyes has a fully fit Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie and a blossoming Adnan Januzaj at his disposal?

If United possessed the formidable midfield that Moyes desires and a genuine rival to Patrice Evra at left-back, then Mata would be a key addition and potentially the missing piece in the jigsaw.

But the jigsaw remains untouched in the box and there are probably several pieces missing, so Moyes’s dilemma over Mata is a strange one.

The Scot knows he has more urgent areas in need of strengthening and the problems in midfield and at the back will only get worse without immediate attention.

Signing Juan Mata will do nothing to solve either of the pressing issues that have contributed to United languishing in seventh place.[/article]

Maybe they are going to adopt our approach of hoping you outscore your rivals. If so, they would have a lethal line up when fit.

I can't understand the lack of faith in Mata from Jose - could it be a Spanish/ Portugese thing?

We spent £40 in the summer and didn't have the champions league revenue...

Right, so it's an FFP thing? Or is this strategic from the owners? If it's the latter, then I don't get it. If it's the former, I don't understand how this wasn't thought through. I understand the fact that the January window traditionally represents poor value (or that's what people seem to say) but presumably there would be some legislating for someone being out due to a long-term injury, or some fall back funding in case we would be in the mix for the top four and needed an injection of quality to make sure we don't fall away?

We need new players this window, specifically full back and someone to compensate for Lucas' absence; I think signing Salah would provide a psychological boost even if I don't consider the position to be as vital as full back or holding midfield. It's getting to the point where teams are targetting our weaknesses; I'm surprised that more teams haven't done it, and expect more to do so now. If we don't sign anyone I will be extremely nervous about our chances of finishing top four, let alone pushing any of the teams above us.

When we were in for Mkhitaryan, the fee quoted was £25 million and was €1m per year. For Costa, it was £22 million and he was also on €1m per year.

Mata is on triple that amount and the fee is more than 50% more. What if we can't make it into the CL? Besides, there's other priority too.

I agree - I don't think we should be in for him at that price. Chelsea hold the whip hand here and are exploiting both Mata's need for 1st team football and Moyes' desperation. But we should still be addressing the weaknesses in our squad. I don't understand why we're not.

We should simply go in hi-jack the deal and get this lad. He'll be a mainstay for the next 4-5 years in our team.

good player but that would be spending a lot of money for someone we dont need, no thanks, he'll go to united and be a good signing for them, grab them some wins, but he wont be the signing they need to push onto fourth

Provided Mata went to utd, would anyone take Kagawa in a cut-price deal or is he just not cut out for the Premier League or is it a case that he's simply not being utilised properly? If I was Moyes I wouldn't have sent Powell on loan at the start of the season.

People are mental with all this "we don't need Mata" talk.

If a player like Mata is available we should be interested. He's an excellent player.

Sterling £18-23m
Coutinho £10-15m

I'd like to see the two of them in the same squad but Coutinho at those prices. I don't think Chelsea would want him though, for the same reasons they're dumping Mata.

I wonder if they want Agger/Johnson/Skrtel

We should indeed but 40 mill and 150-180k a week in wages is a problem for us without CL footy.

Matt Law ‏@Matt_Law_DT 12m Juan Mata has told friends and family he is joining Manchester United #cfc #mufc

Ben Smith ‏@BenSmithBBC 14m Juan Mata did not train with #CFC 1st team today. Not injured. Things now moving quickly towards #MUFC move

Are the people saying Utd don't really need Mata also the same people who said Arsenal don't really need Ozil / Utd don't really need van Persie?
