Beale's salute to Liverpool Academy starlet Woodburn

Liverpool's Ben Woodburn celebrates scoring his side's second goal of the game during the pre-season friendly match at the DW Stadium, Wigan. Barry Coombs/PA Wire.
Liverpool Academy coach Michael Beale says the attitude and work ethic of teenager Ben Woodburn is just as impressive as his talent.

The 16-year-old attacker from Cheshire, who shone for the first-team in pre-season, bagged a classy double in the under-23s’ 3-1 victory over Arsenal at the Emirates last Friday night.
Woodburn is widely regarded as one of the most gifted youngsters on the books at the Academy and he has delighted Beale with the impact he’s made since making the step up to the under-23s squad this season.

“Ben took both his goals against Arsenal really well,” Beale told the ECHO.
“It’s important we manage the hype around him and also that we manage his energy levels.
“We’ve had two really tough games over the past week against Chelsea and Arsenal but what a learning experience for him.

“The biggest thing with Ben is that he’s very low maintenance and high output. That’s what you want from a young player. He’s not brash or flash.
“He works hard and is from a fantastic family. You don’t need to keep his feet on the ground.”

After heavy defeats at the hands of Southampton and Chelsea, the under-23s finally got off the mark courtesy of a dominant display at the Emirates.
Beale believes the inclusion of first-team squad players Lucas Leiva and Andre Wisdom made a big difference.

Lucas was making his comeback after a month out with a hamstring strain, while Wisdom dropped down to the under-23s to get some game time ahead of a likely move away from Anfield prior to Wednesday’s transfer deadline.

“It was much better,” Beale said.

“The team has changed a lot with something like six changes from one game to another. Having Lucas and Andre around the group really helped.
“It was fantastic to see Lucas get 45 minutes. He’s a top pro and a real class act. In the second half he sat and supported the boys, cheering them on. I ask him for advice and he gives me feedback on the young players. I’d happily take a thousand Lucas Leivas.
“Andre has become a bit of a forgotton man. He’s still very young and he showed that he’s a top young player.
“Our midfielders owned the ball - Cameron (Brannagan), Ovie (Ejaria) and Jordan (Williams). When we had the ball we kept it well and it was a performance worthy of playing at a place like the Emirates.

“Ben got the goals but I also thought Harry (Wilson) and Toni (Gomes) were outstanding going forward. We got Harry and Ben in good areas and when Toni’s in that sort of form he causes teams a lot of drama.
“Arsenal are a top team but we showed we have excellent players. My worry sometimes with this team is that we put too much of a lens on it.
“I remember Steven Gerrard making a great comment a few years back about the time when there was no LFCTV, no media around the Academy teams, and how the young players developed away from the cameras. This is a young team and we need to just let these boys grow.”

For people wishing to start a new Lucas thread, there's a smashing quote in there:

That's corporate speak for "He's shit so I have to praise him with generic clichés, in the second half he was gassed and couldn't keep up with the team, so he stood in one place pretending to be the captain and conductor of all the movement going on around him, then I didn't want to bring up his performance to his face so instead chose to ask him for some advice that I won't refer to. If there were a thousand of him, then he would be useful, so I want you to infer from that he isn't worth absolutely zero, he's worth something at least, but just needs a very large multiplier added to it to make it worth talking about".

I think we need a thread on just what you could do with 1000 x Lucas.

Ejaria to be "fucking boss" says coach

Liverpool youngster Ovie Ejaria is starting to realise his huge potential, according to Academy coach Michael Beale.
The 18-year-old midfielder showcased the progress he’s made in 2016 with some eye-catching performances for the first team in this summer’s pre-season friendlies.
A groin injury suffered on the tour of America ruled him out for a month but Ejaria is now back fit and shone for the under-23s on his comeback in their 3-1 win over Arsenal last Friday.
Beale’s relationship with the 18-year-old goes back over a decade and he wasn’t surprised by the plaudits the teenager received after stepping up to the senior ranks.
“I used to drive Ovie to training for his Sunday League team when he was six or seven years old,” Beale told the ECHO.

“We used to live in the same area in south London and he would come into the development centre when I worked at Chelsea. We always kept in contact down the years.

“Even at that age you could see what unbelievable technical ability he had. Now he’s starting to show that and I’m so pleased for him.
“We had to wait for his body to grow but now everyone is seeing what we can do. This summer he opened everyone’s eyes to his potential.”

Victory at the Emirates was especially sweet for Ejaria, who was released by the Gunners two years ago before accepting the opportunity to join Liverpool. He showed the Londoners what they’re missing as he excelled in an advanced central midfield role.

“It was a big night for Ovie going back to the club he spent a lot of time at to play against his friends,” Beale added.

“He showed just how far he has progressed. I said to him afterwards that our manager gives you real hope. Some of his friends maybe don’t have the same pathway as he does.

“It was a fantastic move for him to come to Liverpool. It wasn’t easy for a young boy leaving his family but wow he’s done well.
“He always had talent but now we’re seeing tackles and real aggression in his game. Let’s keep our feet on the floor and see how much work we can do behind the scenes to get him into our first team.”

Liverpool recovered from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 at Brentford. Star man for the Reds was substitute Ben Woodburn who came on after an hour and scored both goals. The first owed a lot to the Brentford keeper but the second was real class, a couple of little shimmies in the box and a cool finish. Cameron Brannagan really bossed the game when he moved deeper in the second half and Adam Phillips showed some nice touches especially in the first half.

Team: Kelleher; Whelan, Brewitt, Ilori, Maguire; Phillips, Virtue; Brannagan; Lennon, Gomez, Dhanda

Nat Phillips and Lewis came on at half-time for Brewitt and Gomez and in the second half Woodburn replaced Lennon, Garton replaced Dhanda and Firth came on for Kelleher

1-0 LFC. Great work from Rafa Camacho and Adam Lewis and Glen McAuley with the finish.

Almost a second for #LFC U18s v Stoke as Jordan Hunter feeds McAuley again who slots home but offside flag up. 1-0

2-0 #LFC. Absolutely brilliant goal. Liam Coyle won ball, superb curling cross from Adam Lewis again and Glen McAuley with his second.

Sending off for Stoke as centre back hauls back Liam Millar after good work from Brewster. Maybe touch harsh. Right on edge but just outside

Free kick wasted but brilliant return ball in from McAuley is volleyed just over by Liam Millar. 2-0 #LFC

'You're not in Spain now lad' - Adam Lewis who has been v good reminds Stoke's Montero he's in Kirkby after Spaniard moans about his tackle

3-1 #LFC U18s with just injury time to come. Rhiann Brewster fires home after good work from Liam Coyle.

@Actonian We seem to have nurtured a special relationship with Brentford. Is that down to McParland's spell there or is there something else going on?

I think McParland won't be flavour of the month as he was part of the Warburton regime and there were rumours that he leaked to the press the news that Warburton was not going to have his contract renewed. Brentford have a pretty good reputation for taking young players on loan and looking after them. Forshaw and Bidwell came from Everton and eventually signed for the club, Jon Toral came from Arsenal a couple of seasons ago, Alex Pritchard from Spurs and John Swift from Chelsea and Canos, of course. The Bees are a good footballing team so young players will be working in the right environment. I was impressed with the Brentford team on Thursday; they played well and with a cute tactical set-up that caused us problems and led to us switching to 3 at the back in the second half.

Ings, Woodburn, Wilson and Ejaria scored in the U23's 4-0 win against Leicester in front of a watching Klopp.

I saw the highlights on LFCTV – it looked a perfect performance. I like the look of Trent Alexander-Arnold in particular – he looks taylor-made for Klopp's vision of a full-back. In a couple of years he will be starting for the first team.

My God. That should have been about 10! Woodburn, Wilson, Trent A-A, and Ejaria are so exciting. When you add Ryan Kent to that there's some serious prospects for players who have a real chance. What's the score with Toni Gomes, I haven't hear how he is doing for a while? Anyone else tearing it up with the yoofs?

I'll answer my own question so.

Toni Gomes scored a hat-trick as a young Liverpool side thrashed Qatar Under-20s 6-1 in a friendly at the Kirkby Academy.
The 17-year-old Portugal youth international put the finishing touches to some slick moves as the Reds outclassed the visitors.
Cameron Brannagan, Adam Phillips and Okera Simmonds were also on target as Liverpool cruised to a thumping victory.
Coach Michael Beale told Liverpoolfc.com: “It was an excellent performance from the lads against the Qatar national team.
“We were at under-20 level and it was great to see lads get some valuable minutes under their belt.
“Joe Maguire was outstanding at left wing-back, Cameron Brannagan dominated the midfield with Matty Virtue, and Toni Gomes was in great form in attack.”
Liverpool U20 team : Ben Williams, Nathan Phillips, Juanma, Tom Brewitt, Joe Maguire (Lattie 61), Matty Virtue, Kane Lewis (Ryan 61), Cameron Brannagan, Toni Gomes (Kris Owens 61), Adam Phillips (Garton 61), Brooks Lennon (Simmonds 61).

Fuck me, imagine when this kid starts building muscle. He could possibly be our Yaya Touré. Very similar style.

This is a great vid of Ejaria against the Arsenal U23s that really shows his range of talents. Key passes, tackling, and just being an all round nightmare for them.

U23 playing against Spurs right now.

Grabara, Arnold, Maguire, Ilori, Whelan, Stewart, Wilson, Virtue, T Gomes, Brannagan, Woodburn.
