I was trying to absolve some of the defensive blame given that Allen was physically dominated by Wanyama, and the forwards didn't make his life difficult enough.

And it was clear that Sakho and co were left rather exposed by the free run given Pelle and Mane. But clearly the most culpable were the defence, hence they didn't come out with any credit at all, whereas at least some of our attacking players did their main job: scoring goals, and some credit.

I'm not at all suggesting that Milner is as important to the side as Carragher, but does anyone remember when Jamie was playing at LB for Liverpool?

He was very solid and dependable, but there was always a large contingent of moaning twats - you know the type "He can't pass/ he's not skilful enough/ he doesn't play like Cafu/ He isn't enough of an attacking threat" - who didn't think we'd miss him. And when he suffered a couple of injuries, it became quite clear just how much we miss him, and how much better we looked with him in the team, even in a position that wasn't ideal for him, although he soon moved to the middle anyway.

With some players it isn't just their individual quality that adds - or detracts - from a team; really special players add an additional boost to the whole team, simply by playing. It's often hard to quantify, or even define, but some players just make the team better, even if they might not be as individually gifted as others.

Again, I'm not saying Milner is "really special" but he does seem to be a player who brings additional qualities and benefits to the team, beyond just what he offers on his own. If that makes any sense. Kuyt was another.

All of that makes very good sense and I entirely agree. This is why I was so pleased we signed him and why I found, and still find, penny-in-the-slot criticism of the signing as "uninspired" (the polite version) to be ridiculously shallow.

Yeah, I've always liked Milner. It's true he's had one or two terrible games, but he's had far more good ones, and the amount of work he gets through, allied with a decent amount of assists, on TOP OF his amazing versatility, makes him a good signing.

He's never going to play like David Silva, but who expects him to?
