when we hold a deep defensive line everything else falls apart. roy see this and does nothing to change it. I fucking hate him.
It's even worse than that. He DOES change it for the odd game but keeps going back to it, like a dog going back to its own vomit.
pure fear. doesn't want to get caught on the counter attack, making sure we don't lose rather than going all out to win.
Do you know how many defenders we had on the bench?? I don't know what the fuck you want us to do, push up against a side that threatened us with pace time and time again?

We were away from home, yeah they're shite but they're also a quick, athletic side, I'm surprised that passed you by.
the threat of the counter attack was definately there but if we are playing in a manner that is effectively negating all our attacking players then pushing higher up the pitch is worth the risk. we've held a high line against better opposition than wigan.
Thats fucking chalkboard, football manager wank Niel. We got raped again and again by pace, all a higher line does is give them more room to rape us into.
bullshit. I fucking said the formation to play was 4-5-1 and flood the midfield making it difficult for the opposition to play through us, but oh no 4-4-2 is the way to go.

and then you have the deep defensive line because we can't push up in case we get caught on the counter but we are STILL getting carved open so yeah, that's right, negate ALL of the attacking players by defending deep and STILL be defensively all over the place.

at least by pushing up you are making us more compact, bringing more of the attacking players into the game and making it more likely you will keep the ball because the players are closer together.
if your strength lies in your attacking players then there is no good reason to defend deep, it doesn't make any sense.

fucking bread and butter tactics that the manager is incapable of grasping and even when he lucks onto it for a few games he can't wait to go back to the tried and tested that has earnt us so much points. it's okay though with points here and there but that's going to get us a 4th place finish.

Neil, would you trust us to play a tight off-side trap at the moment? With the season we've had overall so far?

yes I would. wigan held a high line and we have the best striker in the league.

Actually everton getting late goal is better for us, Bolton also on 16 points now

4-4-4 our form reads now.
Shite. Every single one of our 'Forward' players failed in every single way to hold the ball up and find their men tonight. Thats why we defended deep. Because we constantly lost the ball and invited pressure onto ourselves. The main culprits were Lucas, Shelvey, Kuyt and Meireles but Torres and Maxi werent a lot better.
Im not getting into stupid chalkboard shit with you, but we played poorly almost to a man and it isnt a deep line in defence that did that, its the inability to string two passes together. Please dont respond to me, you'll just regurgitate the same fucking claptrap faux ryan-esque wanky bollocks that turns my fucking skin cold.
We played like twats we gifted possession away constantly and allowed them onto us, that drove our defence deep. They stayed there because the support from the front 5 was non-existent resulting in gang rape. The end.

Bollocks, I can't even be arsed. There's plenty of arguments you're putting forward lately that you argued against under Benitez - "oh playing 451 away from home is soooo negative, where are the attacking fullbacks" blah blah. Neil, the team's not good enough, we don't have a wealth of options, but here's a conundrum for yer:

Whatever formation we play we always end up playing shit away games like this EVERY season where we don't impose ourselves on the game enough or retain possession enough. Now is the constant:

A) The manager
B) The players
C) The tactics

We need better, and until we get it, no amount of moaning over the formation, tactics, subs, approach, is going to change it because this is us. Good enough to go into a big game fresh and up for it, shit enough to go up against the dregs of the league and get outmuscled, out-paced and out-fought.

these are our attacking players
torres

maxi

these are our tactics (whatever the tactics are on the day)

it's up to YOU to attempt to stop US.
in an ideal world this would be our mentality for the majority of our games, instead we look at the opposition and set up OUR team to stop THEM regardless if it negates our ability to attack ourselves. it's bullshit and has seen us lose points hand over fucking fist.

but unfortunately, that IS our attacking players Neil, we need better options than one World Class striker, an ageing World Class midfielder, a centre forward try hard and a half decent free transfer.

You can blame Hodgson for not going for it by bringing on N'gog or Jovanovic. Maybe you can say he should have broken up a winning team as fatigue might have been an issue prior to the game But the majority of the blame lies firmly at the door of professional footballers who can't pass to a fucking team mate. The manager can do fuck all about that once they get on the pitch.

the point remains though our tactics are more to counter the opposition than impose ourselves on them. WE defend deep in case THEY counter attack.
how about WE hold a high line and let THEM deal with the best striker and midfielder in world football.

what is the point of using tactics that makes it difficult to string 3 passes together? what exactly are we achieving by being so disjointed?

Neil, this was one of the biggest gripes these boards had with Rafa. Even when times were good there calls to focus less on the opposition and to focus more on us and our gameplan. You are making no sense.

Yep, I'd agree with that. We have produced this kind of away performances for as long as I remember, and it is still as infuriating as ever.

We can't keep the ball for 5 seconds, we invite pressure on us, we hoof it aimlessly up front where we hope Torres can do something against four defenders, and then the ball is back in our half again within seconds.

I had my problems with rafa but the majority of times I watched games under rafa we were pretty much controlling the game but poor finishig, sloopy defending, whatever made points slip away. in what shape or form were we controlling the game today?
the reason I dislike roy so much is because the majority of time there is no rhyme or reason to his tactics, unless he WANTS the midfield to act like disjointed strangers.

A number of players had bad games today, but the manager carries a fair share of the blame as well for the way the side is set up to play.
Well as disappointed as I am, I wasn't expecting much more than a draw against Wigan at their place.
Wigan are so inconsistent, they could almost be fielding a completely different team every week.

I think this will be the way it pans out from now until the new year. Then we either invest and perhaps hang on to Torres and Reina or its same shit different day and they leave.
If we float around winning more than we lose and within spitting distance of the top 4 then invest in some quality in January and go again then perhaps we can get that top 4 slot and start afresh next year. If we invest we can get 4th.
This squad cannot.

The majority of the time under Rafa we set ourselves up to counter the oppositions strengths rather than play to our own. You idolise Rafa, and now criticise Roy for apparently doing the same.

Can you explain how our defence standing higher up the pitch means that Wigan now all of a sudden have to deal with Torres and Gerrard ?

There doesn't appear to be an ounce of logic in it.

Neil, Rafa could have been sitting on the bench tonight. It was typical of the way we played under him. Take the lead, sit back, hoof, keep giving the ball away, strange substitutions, hanging on for a point.

I don't remember many games in which we were defending for our lives for 50 minutes against relegation sides under Rafa. Am I being selective with my memory?
