What were Klopp's errors this season?

I think persevering with midfielders in defence as long as he did.
Playing Jota in a dead rubber game against Midgetland though I think pressure came from top-high that it was a must win game.
I think playing Hendo as often as he did meant he was likely to pick up a major injury, which he did.
They say hindsight is wonderful thing, and at the time he was limited.

Playing players out of position, basically not trusting Philips.
Not signing a defender early in January.
Persisting with Origi and others who should have been sold during the summer.
Jota against Midtjylland

Taking so long to trust Phillips beside Kabak which took midfielders out of midfiled. Not trusting Kelleher over Adrian earlier in the season with Allison out. Playing Jota in a dead rubber.

Having said that bad luck with injuries played a massive part our season and he's Jurgen fucking Klopp. Actual living legend. We are ridiculously lucky to have him.

No buyers

The naivity we showed in first half in Madrid is a mistake by Klopp. We picked Jota ahead of Bobby as we adressed Jota's goalscoring abilities as better than Bobbys. But opening the quarters in CL away, then you have plenty of time to score goals. You still have to run down the opposition and get the game into your hands first.

Most of the signings / squad issues can be labelled at FSG. i.e. letting Lovren go and not replacing him, not having a CB in on 1 Jan.

In terms of coaching and tactics - Klopp is 100% accountable. Things he could have done better:

  • Sticking with the 4-3-3 when sometimes a fresh approach was desperately needed
  • Not trusting Phillips earlier
  • Some rather uninspired in-game substitutions
  • Loyalty to Firmino and Wijnaldum when, at times, they needed dropping

I guess the main thing is failing to adapt quicker to the situation... and that dead rubber in the CL.

But this season is on the money men / recruitment team. I'd be pretty pissed off about the whole situation if I were Klopp.

Many people saying "not trusting Phillips earlier" ... well maybe, just maybe, from what Klopp was seeing in training he wasn't ready, and had to be worked on for a while until he was. If he had stuck him in a few months earlier and it had all gone pear shaped, this thread will be full of "Putting Phillips in too soon" or "not using Fabinho more as a stand in CB" as his major mistakes.

But then we all know better than Jurgen

(Thiago excluded) Not signing a suitable Coutinho replacement. A dribbler. Even when we won the league that midfield is way too dry.

I don’t personally have a massive issue
With his one off decisions such as playing Jota in Myjidland, was gamble that went wrong like Naby against Real.
However, biggest and most persistent decision was playing our best 2 CMs in defense over a sustrainable period. It caused a big imbalance in all areas, nothing good came of it and cost us massively.
However I forgive him, it’s Jurgen...

Kieta and Ox were both played through the middle, and both of them could dribble. Both a huge let down
Keita is a self confessed defensive midfielder...Ox is a decent midfielder who doesn't excel at anything specifically. Agreed huge let down, but really on Klopp to identify a proper attacking midfield specialist who can dribble with the ball.

I don't like city but I look envious at the range of attacking midfielders that they have that can beat their man. KDB, Foden, Silva...I don't think we have one ball dribbling midfielder thats better than what City have.

Also it seems like it is by design that actually likes his midfield to be how it is. Thiago helps for sure but miss the fear in opposition defenders when Coutinho used to dribble from deeper positions helping to break up those park buses.

1. Played midfielders in defense. A bit of hindsight here though.
2. Messed up Madrid away, which made us exit the CL. This is on him. Poor.

Edit. Keita may have said that he is a defensive midfielder.

However, Keita's agent describes him as a playmaker not a scavenger.

Which means he's not a DM

I wouldn’t call the useless prick a footballer. Never mind giving him a position.
