You place way too much emphasis on it and it clouds and dictates your logic on all footballing matters, which is a shame because something's you say are actually spot on.

Oh well.

take manu for example, when they faced us this season they picked a side purely to nick a point when they played us.
there's is no denying that, surely?
I'm not saying picking an away side and picking a home side is correct only that it's what I would do.

Yeah but Neil, this is where it falls short. They came to us last season without a defensive midfielder, a totally lightweight midfield and they got humped.

01 Van der Sar yellow card
03 Evra
06 Brown
12 Smalling
21 Rafael yellow card (O'Shea 76)
11 Giggs
16 Carrick
17 Nani (Hernandez 45+6)
18 Scholes yellow card (Fletcher 83)

09 Berbatov
10 Rooney
erm, I don't get your point, I would always play a holding midfielder away from home.

I still don't get the crowd part. Do you really think that should play a part in team selection?
the crowd has nothing to do with team selection, I was saying the crowd is a big incentive for the home team to attack.

What happens if a teams fans are notoriously quiet ?

Does that affect your approach ?
Well they shouldn't be if they're professional. They should play how the manager wishes them to.
that's not how it works though is it, look at the chelsea game in the CL semi final, the crowd lifted the home team team and (and I think we can admit this) a superior chelsea side.

ha ha

I'm basically saying away games are tougher than home games, it's not a scientific fact but that's how I see it.

We can't play Spearing against West Ham because they blow too many bubbles.

Obviously Neil is right that teams perform better and play more aggressively at home than they do away - a quick look at a home and away table for any year would show you that. He just places too much importance on it.

How is our home and away record looking ?

some people getting their nose bent out of shape and for what?
I'm saying what I believe if you don't agree it's not a big deal.
I'm not even saying anything radical only that I would switch certain individuals for certain games and guess what, that's exactly what the manager does.

Yes but managers don't change their opinions because of where the game takes place.

The assumption that the home team attacks and the away team plays on the counter is more often than not wrong. So to pick a team based on an incorrect assumption is madness.

sure, managers pick teams based more on opposition (than location) and so would I, for instance I would play a holding midfielder against a top side so playing home or away doesn't come into it. but as I've said if a team is coming to defend against us I would tend to go with players who are better equipped to break them down. in an ideal world I'd be able to select a team that are equally adapt at defending under the cosh as they are at breaking teams down.

it isn't about 'location' it's about whether a team is going to come at us like a train or defend in numbers, so yes I would select a team to counter that or at least attempt to.
I would say roughly 7-8 of my team would remain consistent but I would change a select few based on opposition/tactics.

If you look at the the final table for 2010/2011 not a single team picked up more points away than at home. Probably just an anomaly though.

A serious question... A few were moaning about goal difference at the weekend. When was the last time it mattered? 1989 obviously, but has it mattered since? How about the last European Cup spot?

Yeah it's rare, but it's best not to leave anything to chance surely

All of this would be perfect if our opponents managers would be kind enough to give us advance warning as to how they were going to approach each game against us

Was moaning about it, but not simply for league table reasons.

A big win will give us a boost & possibly help some players find their shooting boots.

We have the best defensive record & IMO have bettered almost every team we've played, with shots galore in most. Should we start scoring more freely I honestly believe we'll be practically unplayable.

We are going to properly shit on some team in this festive season....i tell you.

It could well be against the Geordies....Gerrard loves to play well in that fixture.

Suarez only trained tuesday and friday last week, with that in mind he gave a a very good performance.
