been a while.

1. our defense
we're holding a high line now. all four defenders are reasonably quick.
our fullbacks are pushing on and creating chances (and acting as decoys for attackers with the ball).
stuff I've wanted for a while and (imho) we look a more potent and compact unit as a result.

2. no out and out holding midfielder.
we are holding our own (no pun intended) with no out and out destroyer and I'll be honest I'm a little surprised.
sure, I've been an advocate for dropping this type of player at home but I would always play one away from home.
the question is, have we limited opposition chances because we are so compact and organised (our defense) or is it the quality or rather lack of quality of the opposition?

3. henderson gave a mature performance
got forwards to support the attack but was sensible when the opposition got the ball.
adam and henderson took it upon themselves to shield the defense with jonjo given licence to support suarez.
will be intersting to see what happens when spearing suspension is over, if it isn't broken and all that.

4. jonjo
did really well and got into good positions. needed a little more composure in front of goal but his flick for the first goal was classic.
I think his first liverpool goal isn't far off and if he performs then the need to rush back gerrard is lessened (which will probably lead to another injury).

5. johnson
was sensible with his runs forward and I was pleased when he lead an attacker on the outside rather than showing him inside.
say what you want about johnson at least he's willing to learn and improve the defensive side of his game.

6. carra
looked really rusty when he came on first by cheaply giving the ball away and then by getting megged near the byline.
was good to give jamie minutes though as no way can skrtel and agger complete all the games over the christmas period.

7. downing
to me looked like he was playing within himself like he didn't want to hurt villa. he wasn't direct as he can be and opted to lay the ball off rather than taking responsiblity himself. he is currently lacking confidence but think if he gets a goal or an assist he go on a run.

8. carroll
didn't really have time to make an impact. if the worst happens with suarez then reponsibility will drop squarely on his (carroll) shoulders as I honestly think kenny will go with carroll rather than kuyt as kuyt is having his annual slump.

9. one touch
the amount and frequency of our one touch passing is very pleasing indeed. give and goes and little triangles which kept the ball moving quickly and wore out the oppositions chasing shadows, this would also have helped conserve energy for the christmas programme.

10. counter attackers
we really break at pace with decent speed right throught the heart of the team and we're also commiting numbers forwards, either we have confidence to hold the ball high up the pitch or we have confidence in ouur defense if we lose the ball but it's easy to see how we create so many chances.

11. suarez
was (for him) subdued but he created one once that way right out of the top drawer, figers crossed with the court case.
worst comes to worst I don't think we'll be fucked but it will be a BIG loss

12. bellamy
should start as many games as his knees will allow. I think any game bellamy doesn't start then the nod should be given to maxi, another player I think should play as often as possible.

all in all result aside I am pleased with the shape of the team and how we're creating chances. I think the finishing will come in time.

Lucas is in no way a destroyer, he supports the attack fantastically.

Maybe tiredness was the reason, it might not be for the worst if we lose him for a bit. He looked really heavy legged but to his credit he didn't stop running.

Did anyone notice the goal Johnson was slaughtered on here for against fulham was virtually identical to the one arsenal conceded to city?

I honestly think the lack of Maxi in the Squad is because he is gone in January ....
He's only got 6 months on his deal doesn't he ?

Who is going to buy him instead of waiting 6 months

I think we'd rather keep him for 6 months and lose him for free then get a pittance and lose one of the few players we have that knows where the goals is.

He has EIGHTEEN months guys we have been through this.

My only thought after the Villa game was that "The points table now fills me with hope as opposed to dread and despair"

Im certainly thinking come January 3rd we will be in the mix.
We just have to not fucking norse it up against Wigan on Wednesday now........

It's a shame our GD is gash compared to the top fours' .

were practically four points off chelsea at the moment.

Just as long as nobody jinxes it by predicting twelve points from the next four games or some shit like that

Arf....we can't help doing this to ourselves Count. That's probably why we are all in a football forum in the first place.

Neil, pleeeeeaaaassse use the 'caps lock' button once in a while.
Noooooooooooo! He's only every gonna use it once and then everything will be in capitals and he''ll be shouting.

I like how were improving our ball retention. Pass and move was prevalent in this game and we look a much better team for it.

I still can't understand why you think home matches and away matches are so different that you require two templates. It's just simplistic and naive.

Because at away games, the grass is longer.

is that directed at me? if so I think the home crowd gives the team an incentive to push forwards meaning if you are away you can expect the home team to come at you more. I pick personnel based on this. at home it's about unlocking stubborn defense and I pick personnel based on that.

nothing is written in stone though, for example I saw carroll as a guaranteed starter away from home and that simply hasn't worked out that way. also I'm not talking about wholesale changes, the back four I would leave unchanged, I'm pretty much talking at most 3 players in the front 6 so where maxi would play most home games, kuyt would play most away games. also this will help fatigue later in the season. obviously anyone in red hot form would play as many games as possible.

if kenny manages to stumble upon a consistent side that is able to batter teams home and away then no one will be happier than me.

You place way too much emphasis on it and it clouds and dictates your logic on all footballing matters, which is a shame because something's you say are actually spot on.

Oh well.

take manu for example, when they faced us this season they picked a side purely to nick a point when they played us.
there's is no denying that, surely?
I'm not saying picking an away side and picking a home side is correct only that it's what I would do.

Of course they are times when you do that Neil, but you talk about it generally, without even mentioning the opposition we're facing!

Home match: can't play Lucas.

Away match: can't play Kuyt.

It's an absolutely shite and bizarre view point.

(Note: Last post from me on this. Got stuff to do next week, etc)

Yeah but Neil, this is where it falls short. They came to us last season without a defensive midfielder, a totally lightweight midfield and they got humped
(by a team that packed the middle with Gerrard, Lucas and Ming)

01 Van der Sar yellow card
03 Evra
06 Brown
12 Smalling
21 Rafael yellow card (O'Shea 76)
11 Giggs
16 Carrick
17 Nani (Hernandez 45+6)
18 Scholes yellow card (Fletcher 83)

09 Berbatov
10 Rooney

I know where you're coming from, we can afford to be adventurous at home, but there are so many examples where it also falls short (like Norwich picking us off earlier in the season when Lucas was banned).

Even if you look at our current setup with Lucas injured and Spearing suspended, it's set up to flood the midfield and defend in packs, a slight adjustment from what we've seen alot of times this season.

I didn't say 'can't', I said it isn't set in stone but mostly I would pick teams based on being at home and away. okay last word on this from me as well 🙂
