Trent, Salah and VVD

I feel like Rob Jones is one of those players that developed into a mythical talent far greater than he actually was due to not actually playing “that” much.

In all honesty, I don’t remember much about him as he was playing in the shit Souness years and I was living in Scotland and more engaged with the SPL at the time.
Exactly what I was thinking. Was he really that great?

Like when a musician dies at 27. Frankly I think a lot of the ones who died early weren't that great...

I loved Marcus Babbel but that first paragraph applies equally to him.

Rob Jones was excellent. He got called up for England after a handful of games for Liverpool. If he'd not had the shin splints I'd say we woudl be debating now whether he or Trent was our best ever right back. He also switched to left wing back for a while & did very well there.

While his career was cut short he still had a good 4-5 seasons at Liverpool as a regular starter

Anyway… maybe the answer is actually Glen Johnson!!!! Given he was the RB when we played the best football in 50 years and therefore can claim to be the best RB in 50 years!!!

That may or may not actually include Trent’s time - as the 50 year window has yet to be confirmed - but you can definitely rule out Neale, Nicol, Finnan, Jones, Babbel, Heggem and probably Josemi.

i’m wary of your opinions since the chiesa wife incident
Again, I stand by my statement. Also, you might see that I said "Weren't that great", just like Chiesa's wife is hot, but she's not as hot as I'd expect from someone who's married to a muli-millionaire Italian footballer.

Two things:

Rob Jones was a bone-fide superstar in the making. He made his debut, as an unknown, at OT, when the scum ruled the world, and he marked one of the great wingers of all time out of the game. If he came along now, he'd be every bit as hyped as TAA. He absolutely WAS as good as those of us who sing his praises remember.

Steve Nicol is easily the best RB of my lifetime, and one of our most underrated players ever. He'd start in any Reds team, of any era, and he'd comfortably be considered the best around, if his career was happening right now. The fact that he's turned into an utter bell-end as a pundit often clouds how he is remembered as a player. He was so good, he'd even be mentioned as one of our best ever LBs, FFS.

Yeah, Rob Jones was a fucking great player. Picked up from Crewe in mid-week, made his debut on telly against Man Utd that weekend and marked Giggs out of the game (Giggs went on record a few years later saying Jones was the toughest player he'd come up against). None of this 6 months to adjust nonsense, he barely had 6 days. He was 17 at the time.
I think memories of late-career Jones, when he was often playing out of position on the left and always in agony with shin-splints perhaps makes people forget how genuinely great he was when fully fit and on the right flank.
He didn't have the passing vision of Trent but he was great in attack in a more conventional sense, a strong defender and had pace to burn. Glen Johnson wasn't fit to lace Jones's boots.
Tragic that his career was cut short.

Used to alternate between backing Jones or Burrows for first scorer. Great way to get rid of money, but we had a f'kin buzz doing it.

I remember one time Jones had his customary shot at the Kop end, curled it 5 yards over the bar as usual and everyone fell about laughing while he high fived one of the midfield on his way back to his own half.

As others have said. Jones was a phenom. Would have easily have kept Neville out of the England team had he not been so injury prone.

Had been wondering when Josemi would make an appearance in this thread.

Put some respect on his name.

Either that or you don't know and are guessing in which case it's probably best not to comment.

The latter gets a lot of airing these days.

I definitely remember how he improved once he couldn't play anymore. Not that he wasn't very good but like a fine wine etc.

Bradley made a similar strong start to Jones last season at a tender age…full of promise but a long way to prove himself as up to Trent’s standards over a number of seasons.

Jones was fantastic RB at the time and remember him fondly especially due to being a local lad and what he offered back then. I wouldn't go comparing him to Trent though, Trent for me redefined what a modern RB is now. Jones from what I remember didn't score a single goal for us and around 20 assists for us in his career that as cut short due to injuries. Defensively there is a comparison between both but going forward, he is in a different league to pretty much ever other RB now and then.

Stephen motherfucking Wright, the original Flanagan.

Did you say Flanagan?
