The January transfer window

Once again in this window, I love the kinds of attacking players we are being linked with. Morata, Salah, Yarmolenko, Rakitic… If we can land any one of those targets, we've done good business.

I'm just trying to reverse jinx us really!

My recollection is that the owners have put around 45m into the club in the last three seasons - putting us on the verge of breaking the FFP rules.

So if that's right spending to help qualify for the CL will disqualify us from it.

According to Rurikbirds summer summary thread, we have knocked about £9.3m off this years salary note, after a £18.3m net spend, thus leaving our spend by the end of the season at about £9m, which would be quite miserable for LFC, so I'm still hoping for someone that improves our midfield.

From today's Echo:

Rumour One
Liverpool have got the green light to sign Yann M’Vila after the midfielder’s agent admitted he is keen on a move to the Premier League. Reds boss Brendan Rodgers is known to rate M’Vila highly, and he has been receiving glowing scouting reports on his performances for Rubin Kazan this season. And amid growing rumours that Liverpool are now ready to make a bid for the France international, his agent has revealed that M’Vila is desperate to play in England.
‘I think many players dream of playing in the Premier League – Yann is no different,’ said Werner Baader.
‘I will not deny there is interest from many European clubs, including English teams. ‘We will see what happens.’ M’Vila, who was previously a target for Arsenal, is believed to favour a transfer to Liverpool over any other club.

Rumour Two
Liverpool have been linked with £10m Genoa right back Sime Vrsaljko.
Reports in Italy suggesting Rodgers is impressed with his versatility, with the 21-year-old comfortable in playing all the way across the back line.

Rumour Three
Serie A outfit Udinese want to sign out-of-favour Liverpool front man Fabio Borini to replace veteran striker Antonio Di Natale at the Stadio Friuli next season.
The Italy international was Reds head coach Brendan Rodgers’s first-ever signing after taking over from previous manager Kenny Dalglish in the Anfield hot seat in the summer of 2012, with the Northern Irishman splashing out £10.5m in order to land Borini from Serie A giants AS Roma on a five-year deal.
However, it is fair to say that in the intervening 18 months on Merseyside, the striker has found it desperately hard to win a regular starting place up front for the Reds, with both a plethora of untimely and lengthy injury layoffs and a loss of confidence in front of goal contributing to Rodgers’s decision to loan the 22-year-old out to Sunderland for this campaign on transfer deadline day last September.
But with just three goals and one assist to his name in total in all competitions for the struggling Black Cats, Borini’s luck in front of goal has not changed and now with Udinese offering both the player and Liverpool an escape route, the Italian looks like having played his final game for the club.

Rumour Four
Valencia are poised to make a short-term loan move for Liverpool striker Iago Aspas, according to BeIN Sports Italia.
The 26-year-old has struggled to settle on Merseyside since his big-money move from Celta Vigo last summer and the Spanish giants have contacted the Reds over his availability.
Aspas, who netted 12 times in La Liga last season, struck his first goal for Liverpool in their recent FA Cup win against Oldham at Anfield.

Rumour Five
Liverpool defender Daniel Agger has said that he is ignoring speculation linking him with a move away from Anfield.
Italian side Napoli, coached by former Reds boss Rafael Benitez, have reportedly made an enquiry about the Danish international, who arrived in Merseyside from Brondby in 2006.
The 29-year-old centre-back has been restricted to 12 appearances in all competitions this season, but he said that he has been unlucky with injuries and is not looking to leave the club.
"I can't do anything about the rumours, but there is no point spending any time on them," The Mirrorquotes him as saying.
"I'm not thinking about moving, not at all. There is no reason to believe the rumours. I have been out of the team at times this season, but I have been unlucky.
"Before one game, I suffered a stomach injury; and another I got ill the night before, and I would have played both times. So at times you are a bit unlucky, but that's what happens when you are injured and the team plays well - when the team is doing well it becomes difficult."
Barcelona are also reported to be long-term admirers of Agger.

Sime Vrsaljko is a name I hadn't heard before. I'll ask people who are more knowledgeable about Serie A what kind of player he is.
Sheridan Bird gives us the lowdown on the young Croatian in this comprehensive scouting report

“They compare me to lots of famous full-backs. But I just want to be me,” says Sime Vrsaljko (Shi-may Ver-psycho).
Such has been the Croatian’s form lately, many high-profile clubs would love the 21 year old to be ‘himself’ in their team.
As exclusively revealed in the Daily Mirror, Genoa revelation Vrsaljko is being monitored by Arsenal, and he is the adaptable, modern type of player who would enhance any Premier League team. A right-back by trade, the 6ft 1in starlet has also played left-back for Croatia Under 17s.
But that isn’t where his flexibility ends. “I have played further up the right flank in midfield and attack. I have even played in central midfield,” says Vrsaljko.
The Zadar-born prospect has the stamina to cover an entire wing on his own, providing solidity and energy. Taller than the average full-back, Vrsaljko is good in the air too.
Like his idol Dani Alves, he is an asset near the opponent’s goal. His progress as a wing-back ahead of Genoa’s three centre-backs has showcased his buccaneering instincts.
Vrsaljko makes himself available on the overlap and has a crisp, consistent cross. Being Croatian he has the vision and technique to play decisive passes to the forwards. This guy won’t bomb in to area then lose his way.
Refreshingly, he has put his development and education above wealth and prestige. Some pundits were surprised by his move to the Luigi Ferraris Stadium from Dinamo Zagreb this summer, despite rumoured interest from Inter, Marseille and Spurs.
“I came to Genoa because the club give youth a chance.
"If I’d joined a ‘big’ club I probably wouldn’t have had much playing time. This is a good team. There are young talented players, who are ambitious like me,”? Vrsaljko told Genovese paper Il Secolo XIX .
Croatia has produced fine, thrilling full-backs like Robert Jarni and Dario Srna. Precocious Vrsaljko, who made his international debut in 2011 and has four caps, has the ability and temperament to emulate them.
The Griffins say they won’t let him go cheaply. The Italian press has mooted a fee of €15m (£12.5m). If the multi-tasking, athletic and tactically astute Vrsaljko continues his impressive rise, that’s a steal.

Is vision & technique a well know national characteristic of all Croatians?

Yeah, I also thought that phrase was a bit odd. Croatian players do have solid technique more often than not though.

Just like Modo, I'd love Yarmolenko, he's like Deigo Costa lite.

I even made him a song (to the tune of row your boat)

Yar-Yar-Yarmolek-Yarmoleko
Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily, running down the wings.

Fucking hell. That's the worst effort since Cochyn's infamous Mascherano song.

Does anybody else remember Cochyn's Mascher song? It consisted of artfully attaching -o to the end of words in a way that made you think it could have been composed by Tom Bombadil.

When Mascher scores a goal-o

kind of thing. Now *that* was so bad it was good.

I can't say I remember it unfortunately 🙁 there has been some shockers down the line. I can't remember for the life of me who suggested this, but it was years ago, and they're long gone, but someone suggested that the crowd made certain noises together when certain things happened, like a laser noise or something when there was a tackle and the crowd would shout out "defenders" whenever we cleared the ball. It's was embarrassingly awful, but hilarious thinking back, I have no idea if anyone would remember that from my vague description.

@Liddellpool: #LFC are targeting Mexican right back Hiram Mier, Monterrey , talks are going on over a possible deal. acc to Tuttomercato

Replacement for Johnson?...

I'm afraid Yarmolenko:s popularity here has jinxed the signing. He's walking over to join Arda Turan and Keisuke Honda in the "favourite creative wingers we'll never sign" corner now...

5 mill. Christ, he's worth nowhere near that

I don't know, according to Everton fans last year he is better than Suarez.

On the subject of M'Vila, is he friends with Sakho by any chance? Perhaps that would make us more attractive a prospect if so. Though then we'd have two French troublemakers on our books.
