The January transfer window

What we need according to Lawro

What they need in a nutshell: A young striker to learn off Luis Suarez.

Window shopping: I don't think Brendan Rodgers needs to do much in January because he has lots of options in attack, midfield and defence and they have proved they can cope without Steven Gerrard or Daniel Sturridge when they have been injured.

If Suarez is sidelined then that is a different matter of course but any team in the world would miss him in the form he is in.

I just wonder if Rodgers might go for a young striker or attacking midfield player because if you got the right player in now then he could learn off players like Suarez, Gerrard and Philippe Coutinho and you could bring him along very quickly.

The Liverpool squad is certainly not crying out for reinforcements but, with Suarez having just signed a new deal and Liverpool in the title race despite their defeats over Christmas, this might be a good time for Rodgers to go and ask for the funds for another big signing.

Linked with: Martin Montoya RB, 22 (Barcelona), Ryan Bertrand 24, LB (Chelsea), Ivan Rakitic 25, CM (Sevilla), Arda Turan 26, AM(Atletico Madrid), Javier Pastore 24, AM (Paris St-Germain), Everton Ribeiro 24, AM (Cruzeiro), Koke 21, AM (Atletico Madrid), Ryan Gauld18, AM (Dundee United), Mohamed Salah 21, FW (Basel), Danny Ings21, CF (Burnley), Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu 23, CM (Udinese) Pedro26, FW (Barcelona).

The same Lawro who said this...

Former Liverpool defender Mark Lawrenson believes that the Reds have made a mistake by overlooking Demba Ba and securing the services of Daniel Sturridge.

Ba made the switch from Newcastle United to Chelsea, while Sturridge left Stamford Bridge for a career revival on Merseyside but Lawrenson has questioned the England international's attitude.

"You know what you are getting with [Ba] and I think he is a really good player," Lawrenson writes in The Mirror. "I'd take him over Sturridge all day long.

"In fact, for the money that Chelsea have paid I think he is an absolute steal. I have no idea why Liverpool decided against Ba and went for Sturridge.

"My reservations with Sturridge centre around the fact that he has some growing up to do and I'm not sure whether he will be able to see the big picture on the pitch."

The bloke is a cock who loves a sly dig towards the club that made him, to be fair to him the BIB is bang on.

And Bertrand is 25 this yr. Even Luke Shaw at 19 has played almost double the amount of top flight games then him.

It wasn't so long ago that Ryan Bertrand was hailed as the next big English LB prospect.

If Shaw and Bertrand switched clubs, I'm not sure the perceived difference between them would be so pronounced.

Shaw would play for a start so theres a big difference already, i must of missed the Bertrand bit being hailed as the next big English left back prospect, honestly cant ever remember a thing about that.

We've been linked as a competitor to Monaco for the signing of Mathieu Valbuena. Turning 30 this year though (and he's 5'6").

I would love it if we signed him.
I think he'd be an instant cult hero.

Yeah, wouldn't mind him but he signed a contract extension last year till 2017 so am slightly surprised if he is to leave for a "normal" fee.

Don't see it happening. Just doesn't seem like the right signing for us especially age-wise.

Di Maria made a gesture when he was subbed off yesterday. Think there's a high chance he's leaving in this transfer window. The fans apparently whistled at him with every touch of the ball.

[article]Angel Di Maria has hit out at suggestions he made an obscene gesture to supporters after being subsituted in Real Madrid's 3-0 win over Celta on Monday.

The Argentine appeared to grasp his groin as he left the field in the victory at Santiago Bernabeu after some sections of the home support booed him for his performance.

Di Maria insists he was not attempting to make any gesture and claims his actions - unlike those of his team-mates' - are scrutinised to a frustrating extent whenever he takes to the field.

"It wasn't for anyone. I adjusted myself and kept running," the 25-year-old told Fox Sports.

"I've never had problems with the fans. I could feel that half were applauding and half booing.

"I went out totally naturally. They always expect me to do something. I always have to clarify what I do. With everyone else nothing happens and with me it's always a complete mess.

"I fight every day for a place at Real Madrid and it makes me angry that things are always being invented about me. But I am calm because I know it was nothing."

Carlo Ancelotti had earlier suggested any attempted gesture from Di Maria would have been "a mistake" but stressed he was not concerned over the incident.

Two goals from Cristiano Ronaldo - his 399th and 400th of his career - and a strike from Karim Benzema sealed the points for the hosts against Celta.[/article]

[article]Inter Milan chief Piero Ausilio expects Cagliari midfielder Radja Nianggolan to move to AS Roma.

Ausilio insists they were never in for the Belgian.

“[Nainggolan] isn’t an objective we missed out on because we never pursued him,” he told Sky Sport Italia.

“This morning I believed he was heading to Napoli, now he seems to be going to Roma. There is no disappointment, since we didn’t think we could acquire him."[/article]

Made a gesture? Wasn't he just lifting the sack? Ill timed maybe, but every man has to do it every now and again.

We´re linked with a loan move for Benficas Johnny Ola!!

Could we make an offer they can´t refuse?

My Arsenal supporting mates dont believe that rumour. They dont really need that type of player and will Wenger spend 45 mill on someone who hasnt proved that much yet.

Martinez was watching mini Messi on Sunday.

Roberto Martinez at Tannadice. No doubt there to watch Ryan Gauld etc. Aberdeen fans were there in numbers this week and couldn't spot them.

[article=http://www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/liverpool-joy-daniel-sturridge-returns-2995437#ixzz2piihm1sn ]Rodgers is also keen on £9m-rated Egypt international Mohamed Salah, but it now seems the Reds are far more likely to push through a transfer at the end of the season.

Talks have been ongoing with the attacking midfielder's Swiss club, Basel, but the fee for a player who will have less than two years left on his contract in the summer remains a sticking point.

Rodgers is unsure if spending the extra cash it would require to secure Salah now will deliver instant dividends, as it is likely the 21-year-old will require time to adapt to the Premier League.

Instead, the Anfield manager may decide to save his transfer kitty until the summer, and attempt to bring in loan players as temporary solutions to his pressing need to add depth to the squad.

Liverpool have been interested in a deal to take unsettled Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Javier Pastore for the rest of the season, and also pursued Swedish international forward Ola Toivonen of PSV Eindhoven - though that now seems unlikely.[/article]

"Manchester United’s chief scout Robbie Cooke was at La Rosaleda to see Atletico Madrid beat Malaga, with Diego Costa and Koke the focus of his attention."

Surely Atletico Madrid will at least wait till the end of the season before considering any bids?

They'll only sell for a ludicrous fee, you'd think. We were meant to be bidding in the region of 24 million before he signed a new contract, and before he embarked on what looks to be the best season he's ever had. You'd think they'd need a silly bid to make them consider selling.

They're going to run Madrid and Barca close for La Liga, and are a definite dark horse for the CL ... They may not be able to pry them away in the summer for that matter either. It would be a step down!

Didnt Costa sign a new contract in the summer? whys he getting linked with everyone all of a sudden? also be arsed with loan signings

Rumoured release clause, I really hope he doesn't go to another English club, he'd be perfect over here.
