This is generally true. We did succeed in paying deeper for Torres' benefit though, a few years ago. But I generally agree that our best option is players that can work in tight areas; ie the best players, are what we need.

From our chances created stats, it is fairly clear we are stretching defences, we're just not inserting the ball in the onion bag. If we had a paucity of chances in each game (as per Hodgson's era) then we would be crying out for creativity, but we are racking up dozens of good chances in each game. We happen to be taking almost none of those.

Well fair enough. But I don't think it necessarily follows that these players would be unwilling to do that. In our current crop, none of Suarez, Bellers, Maxi and Kuyt can be described as real wingers, but they all like to run wide when the space is there.
