Andy Carroll is set to leave Liverpool this summer.

The £35million flop came on for the closing 25 minutes of Liverpool’s disappointing 1-1 draw with Aston Villa on Saturday.

Last Sunday, on his return to Newcastle, Carroll delivered a torrent of abuse as he stormed straight down the tunnel after being subbed.

Manager Kenny Dalglish has insisted that reaction has been dealt with.

But an Anfield insider revealed: “Kenny has gone out of his way to protect Carroll from criticism. He’s straight with his staff, but many people here are concerned that players like Andy have not adapted to the Liverpool way.”

Carroll has told friends he’d welcome a return to Tyneside but his current wages would break Newcastle's pay scale and they would only be interested in a cut-price summer deal.

That said, I'm getting to the point were I think a sale is the best option. But if a new manager is on the cards Andy deserves a go.

Kenny seem cluless about how to get the best out of him, and when he constantly subs our wingers for him you just cant see it changing either.

Its been a shocking transfer. And with someone else than Comilli in charge we'd have to very good players on the books instead of one we cant find a place for.

That will haunt us for years and tears.

I agree. If Kenny wants to be given more time then he's a hypocrite if he ships the likes of Carroll after one season.

and being realistic , what is his resale value even if we do decide to sell ? I'd be surprised if we got above 15m for him and i'd expect closer to 10m . I mean who is there out there to buy him ? Outside the top 6 nobody is even spending that much really and i doubt anyone above us even wants him .

Do Newcastle want him ? I can only see them going for him if Ba moves and even then pardew said last week that they play a different style now to when they had carroll so they might even have doubts of him doing it there again .

I still think that he will do well for another club and probably become an England regular.

I think he has the ability to do so. What I question is whether he'll ever grow into a player, or an individual generally, who can make the most of that ability on a consistent basis. Either way, I think his time with us is up.

However, I do think we need an option in the squad who can give us some of the things Carroll *is* good at, as there are going to be times when we need those in our locker. Oh, for a young John Aldridge.

Not the same thing at all. It takes a darn sight longer to rebuild a whole playing squad than it does for an individual player to get his @rse into gear.

People are asking for carroll to adapt his style of play, yet kenny doesn't seem to change his style of play regardless of results. Surely performance of a manager is judged on tactics and points as much as a strikers is goals.

Yes carroll has been a fuck up, but he should be given longer to bed in, or at least a consistent run of starts to TRY and learn how to adapt his play.

I've heard people on here over the last few months saying he needs to change the way he plays. I'm not convinced but i think i heard kenny say similar too (again, this might be my imagination).

If kenny wanted another string to our bow, then why does he insist on bringing downing off for carroll on numerous occasions. Does he want the ball played from deep rather than the byline? But then why does he insist we not flood the box when he does play downing...

The tactics are all over the place and it hasn't helped downing or carroll

I'm often frustrated when he takes Carroll off for Downing and vice versa, it doesn't seem very bright. Having said that Carroll mostly heads the ball like a centre half who's found himself up front by mistake. Maybe he's a decent defender.

As has been discussed endlessly elsewhere on here, Downing's record for crosses and assists has been so impressive it is indeed puzzling that he ever gets dropped at all. He had all that time earlier in the season to show how vital he was to Carroll and my god did he make the most of it, so it's astonishing when he gets hooked. Keep the hypocrisy going. Pip pip!

Except bellamy doesn't cross as much as downing. I was happy with who we brought on but not who we took off. Kuyt made more sense to me than downing as dirk had minimal impact as the game progressed.

I was also pissed off he wasted our last sub by bringing agger on, BUT that substitution led to a goal so i can't complain. Good on him for that.

You seem to be at the stage now macca where you try more to have a pop at the people who aren't enamoured with dalglish than make decent, non stroppy, posts. What gives? Why not debate with people rather than this attitude you seem to have?

I'm going to sympathise with Macca's point.

Downing and Carroll have not linked up well all year. They are not an amazing double act. It's perfectly fine to substitute one for the other.
