The Egyptian King

I've never seen anyone baffled by him not winning individual awards.

I've definitely seen people baffled by fans who say he's basically shit.

I think you know what I mean. Quite often he's largely uninvolved or at least unimpressive, despite his output. It's practically his calling card tbh.

I think honest people would admit that.

I could be absurdly misremembering but I think Ronaldo (Portuguese) was also like that a lot. Invisible til he scored a hattrick. Maybe that's just because the last years are more like that than in his prime

He's 11 short on goal contributions
I know, but I'm talking assists. Henry getting 20+ & 20+ is a high fucking bar. 8 assists we'll have to see as he usually tails off as the seasons go. I've no doubt he'll get the goals though

Really depends on our strikers being able to find the net consistently. He certainly will create enough chances for them.

Genuine question: does it matter that Salah is so often basically shit? Is there more to the game than just numbers? For me Suarez was always brilliant for us, almost every game he played, even when he was getting like 1 in 3 the first 18 months.

I think people are being disingenuous when they act baffled that he's not always up for the ballon d'or etc. It's cos he doesn't really play like a world class player that often - he just consistently produces world class numbers. And that's obviously the most important thing for us. But let's not pretend like it's everything there is.

I agree it's definitely a factor, but I also think he's definitely been unfairly judged for not being European or South American.

Salah didn't make the top thirty last year

11th in 2023, highest position is 5th before that. Objectively he's been better than that, and whilst I can't be arsed going through it, I suspect there's lesser footballers ahead of him.

It was more last year when he wasn't in the top 30 which felt very dubious and taken for granted.

It's absurd that he wasn't top 10 last year.

Yeah not being in the top 30 is mental.

I'd say he's a good contender for it in exceptional years like this one, when the sheer numbers make up for the slight lack of brilliance.

i dont remember well enough, but did henry run the show? i remember he ghosted in finals, but i can't remember if he dictated play. I dont think he did

Kinda, and definitely in the final third. He had a very stable platform around him though. Cole, Campbell, Viera, Petit, Silva, Fabregas, but he still had some very special performances against the very best.

26 goals
18 assists

44 goal involvements in 34 games.

And it’s the first week of Feb with a potential for another 23 matches.

On track for his best ever season with us.

Give him the damn contract!!!

Can we make it a 1 year contract that means he plays like this every year to get a new contract?
I defo wouldn't give him another contract till May now anyway.
But happy for it to end of the last game in May with everyone pitch and Mo signing the paper contract on a big fuck off gold desk for everyone to see.

So frustrating we conceded at the end but fuck me where would we be without this man.

1-0 down crowd going nuts, lovely assist.

Then a goal and should have had a foul late in the game taking them all on.

Insane numbers.

Please sort out his contract!

To be honest, this season is like Stevie G 2004-2006 for me. He has carried us upfront, the rest of the attack would fall apart without. He is about important moments and delivers almost every game in one form or another.

Another goal, involved in Diaz’s goal, another off side goal too.

Not his best game but he continues to drive us to a title charge.

What a man!

He was pretty awful today. Usually a good outlet, but was schooled by Ait-nouri and whoever else he was up against.

Still scored A great pen and got a sort of assist, which kind of sums him up on a bad day. Invaluable even when shit..

Salah's contributions in the first four seasons in the league.
vs
Salah's contributions in the last four seasons in the league.

He shouldn't be playing this much. He looks as typically jaded as ever at this stage in the season, and the manager has a replacement he doesn't trust to even manage his minutes. I don't even know if I can argue with him either. Since we aren't comfortable at any point in any game, he just keeps playing. His overall performances are really poor, especially in terms of the game state. When we can't hold onto the ball, and it goes up to Salah, I'm not sure what he thinks he is trying to do, like, what the goal is. He certainly has adapted to the fact that he can't beat people for pace in the attacking third. He hasn't when doing hold up though. When we desperately just need to keep the ball, and there's nothing on, he is not the man you want with the ball, but he's most likely to receive it.

I'm really worried, because if he continues down this track, who is picking up the slack?

Yup, can't argue with much of this.
Good post.

Difference is he is at least scoring at this stage of the season unlike before. Salah has always been about moments, key question if he doesn’t play then whom do we play?
Even at his worst, still capable from impacting the game and that’s why he keeps playing. The tracking back thing? Not sure I agree. After our subs, we had a lot down our right. Defo can do better but it’s not like he asking Trent to jog back or ask Bradley to be a sick note, we have to work with what we have.
