LIVERPOOL are plotting a £15million summer swoop for Daniel Sturridge to help fire them back into the
Champions
League.

New boss Brendan Rodgers will act quickly after the departure of Dirk Kuyt to Fenerbahce and the Chelsea striker, 22, is at the top of his wanted list.
It is thought Sturridge may be offered a new deal at Stamford Bridge soon – but his future at the club is far from certain.
And the former Manchester City forward won’t commit to anything until he discovers if Roberto Di Matteo is given the Blues job full-time.
If he does, which looks increasingly likely, the young hitman knows he won’t get much of a look-in.
Sturridge has been unhappy at his lack of games under Italian Di Matteo and, when he has come on as a substitute in a wide position, he doesn’t feel comfortable. He sees himself as playing in a central role.
Liverpool would be delighted to make him one of their main men and it’s no secret that they tried to get him to Anfield as part of the Fernando Torres deal when the Spaniard joined Chelsea last year.
Rodgers sees Sturridge fitting perfectly into a Kop strikeforce featuring Luis Suarez, Andy Carroll and Craig Bellamy.
But his old club might have other ideas and could rival Liverpool in the scrap for Sturridge’s signature.
City boss Roberto Mancini has repeatedly asked why Sturridge was ever allowed to leave Manchester three years ago. The Birmingham-born ace joined the club’s academy in 2003 aged 13 and looked destined to be an established star until his shock move.
Another Chelsea player who will wait to see who becomes the next boss at Stamford Bridge before deciding his future is Oriol Romeu.
The former Barcelona player, 20, played only twice under interim chief Di Matteo after being a regular starter under former boss Andre Villas-Boas.
Romeu arrived in London last year for £5m but the Catalan giants have first option if he is to be sold again.
If Di Matteo is given the job, Romeu could again find himself on the sidelines – something that could cause the Spaniard to look for a move.

I'd rather we found someone with a bit more experience. Everyone thought Henderson was money well spent. I just think that paying that sort of money for a kid is asking for trouble.

With regard to transfer fee, Southampton just paid £6m for Jay Rodriguez, who is of the same age as Sturridge but hasn't played at top flight/European football level. That said, he only has a year left on his contract (if I'm not mistaken). Alas, it is worth noting there's a 15% sell on clause payable to Man City.

11 goals in 28 APPEARANCES in the league last season. Not bad at all for a lad his age. A leftpegger too.

He's a big talent; but (a) he seems to be a bit of an arrogant cock; and (b) will have huge wage demands/possible motivation issues etc. On talent alone, he'd be worth it, but I hope we consider this carefully.

Pretty much.

8 goals in 12 league games when on loan at Bolton too (at age of 21), playing for a manager who sees him in his preferred role of a striker.

“First and foremost he is a natural footballer and a terrific goalscorer, but for me he is more than that," Coyle told reporters.

"He has pace, is tricky, is comfortable with both feet, and he is an exciting player.

"He receives the ball and you think 'You know what? Something is going to happen,' which as a manager is great.

"Even as a fan he is the type of player I love watching because all of a sudden you are out of your seat and you are thinking something special could happen.

"He is prepared to go and take people on, which I love as well, and he has just been a terrific acquisition for the club.”

After a great start to his Bolton career Coyle has now called for the striker to continue to develop and keep scoring goals.

He said: "Ultimately Daniel has to continue to keep moving forward, he has to keep progressing, to keep being hungry for the goals, and hungry to improve as a footballer.

"He will know himself there are little bits and pieces where he can improve, and hopefully we can help him achieve that goal."

The Bolton boss has already spoken of his desire to sign Sturridge on a permanent deal but insists that he is happy to have the player at all.

He continued: "I'm enjoying having Daniel at the club, and my focus between now and the end of the season is to help him to realise his potential, and in doing that he is obviously going to help us.

"For me it was always going to be a win-win situation, that Chelsea would get back a player who has had the opportunity to play week in and week out in the league.

"I get a striker who is hungry and will score goals, and the club benefit from such a young and exciting player."

Agreed, we do need to look at it closely. He wants first team football and would still be battling it out with Suarez, Carroll and Bellamy, so it's hardly a given, though I do think he suits Rodgers' brand of football more, which again raises questions over Carroll.

Bellers and Suarez will really be wing-forwards in Rodgers' system though Mark. So it'd really be between Carroll and Sturridge for the central striker slot. We need that sort of competition anyway, and the good thing is they're different kind of players. We'll need that versatility and strength in depth over the course of a 50-60 game season.

I think with Rodgers, we'll see a three man attack with one central fulcrum, and two wing-forwards. Carroll is an option for the central striker role, but as I've said in the past, it'll require a re-configuration of his playing style in some respects - a realisation of his true strengths if you may - which IMO is playing him as a face-to-goal battering ram, and NOT the back-to-goal target man we've been trying to play him as. He just doesn't have the touch or the centre of gravity to be an effective back-to-goal player. Whereas his running power and left peg could still see him being an effective face-the-goal player IMO.

As an alternative to Carroll for the central striker role, I'd want someone with pace and skill, a face-the-goal player again, but of a different ilk i.e. not a battering ram, but someone who thrives playing off the defence's shoulder. Someone like a Torres or an Owen. I've bandied Loic Remy for a while as among the players on the market, I think he's that sort of player. Sturridge would interest me for those reasons as well, even though he's been played more as a wing-forward at Chelsea; I reckon his true potential is that of a central off-the-defence's-shoulder kind of striker.

I know, we need a plan B too. It'll just be interesting to see who that is and whether they'd be content with that. I know there's still alot of games though, but there are big games and that's where the decisions come in.

i dont think anyone thought henderson was money well spent, maybe compared to downing and carroll but thats not saying much

Sturridge and Adam Johnson for 6-8M each will be good business.

Neither are worth 15M or anywhere near there.

Pacy, direct, full of self belief, tricky and scores goals. People have moaned about us lacking these qualities all season.

Good player, but his attitude stinks and he can't be trusted on the pitch. He's positionless, only works one way, is way too selfish, and I'm not surprised Chelsea might be willing to sell.

I really don't know mate, but we should be looking to get much more quality if we're going to spend £15mil imo.

Just looking over the last season or so we've seen a shed load of forwards come into the Prem for a fraction of this price, who have all out performed him.

They've signed one young talented player (Hazard), will probably sign another (Hulk) and Sturridge won't see much playing time ... So it makes sense but I'm surprised really - the talent is there, he just needs to be coached far better.

You're never going to get them for such a small fee lets be realistic.
They've done nothing to justify large fees. Both are not first team regulars and are young players finding their way. I believe that 15M is for proven first teamers. Even Defoe is going at around 8M if reports are to be believed.

We should not be bullied into paying over-inflated prices. If they're not willing to negotiate, move on and look at other targets.

Hes a decent player but 15m is a bit much, I dont think hes any better than Kalou and he was available on a free

I think he has a lot more going on then Kalou. I don't even think 15 million is exorbitant for a young player with so much potential.
