So who do we want/expect/hope?

The head of the LMA was just on sky sports talking about press bullshit. He said the press had Villas-Boas as a front runner for the liverpool job but he had spoken to him at some golf day yesterday and he had had ZERO contact from Liverpool.
Honest to fuck it drives you mental.
I reckon we have only had one manager on the list (Martinez) and have not announced him until we have out dof.

Lol

Look at that bastard pulling the 'Joey' face behind him. But AVB is above such mockery, such is his studiousness in respect of the game.

I really don't think we should go for Martinez. I don't mind him at all, but we need to aim higher. And I'm not only talking in terms of merit but also, and I believe this is quite important on several levels, in terms of pulling power. We need a manager that'll send a signal to the best players around:

Liverpool FC are back and aiming for the top.

Personally I'm not sure Martinez fits that criteria.

Aaah, but they would say that, wouldn't they ?

Smokescreens, son.

Smokescreens.

i mean obviously i've no idea on what is going on behind the scenes but would it not be logical to have the "Sporting Director" in place before deciding on the manager/coach ?. Surely they would be heavily involved in the recruitment process , have ideas etc .

Not shooting it down completely but again i'd have concerns with van gaal as sporting director especially if he still wants to coach . I just doubt how long he'd stay in the role before looking for another job or start hankering for the job here if it's not working out for whoever the coach is .

First para - the report from the "Grauniad" quoted above says in so many words that an offer's been made to Van Gaal. I wonder whether what we've got here is him saying "OK but I'd want/not want X or Y as coach if I take the job".

Second para - agree 100%. I'd add that there would be a question about how long someone else could work with such an extremely strong personality over them. It'd be a risky appointment for sure (though I'd sooner take that risk than appoint Villas Boas).

The sad fact is that attracting the best players in the world is not something we will be doing. We can't afford them.

We need to be attracting under rated players, and young talents. And the name of our club should be enough for that.

According to the Echo, AVB is a non runner looking like it will be Martinez or maybe a shock appointment is on the cards!!

Remind me who Barca's new manager is ?

It's going to be Martinez.
Whether it comes to signings or managers, there's always a very strong rumour about someone that a lot of people don't want, and everyone tries to convince themselves it won't happen. But it always does.

There's a slight difference here, as Barca has already got the best players in the world.

but my point was people go to Barca despite the manager, they want to play for Barca the club. Barca have appointed 3 managers in a row who have ZERO experience in management yet still attracted top players.

We can still get top players coming to us like Suarez without having a Mourinho type manager, we are a big enough club to attract top talent even if the manager was Martinez.

I hope the club don't bother sending a message or making a statement of intent because its that sort of macho bollox that leads to stupid decisions

A few years down the road if Barca starts to struggle they will face the same difficulties (more or less) as anyone else, and would then have a bigger need for a capacity in the manager-seat and not just someone unknown from their own ranks. Imo.

For our part I'm not talking about big merit managers like Mourinho, they somehow could be beyond our reach anyways, but especially former greats, like Laudrup, De Boer, Deschamps etc. They've got not only the managerial talent to show but their good footballing reputation as well. I hope we get a manager whom fulfills these criterias is all.

Players move to win things, for money, to big name clubs, to play against the best teams.

Who the manager is further down the list, in my opinion. Players generally only dislike managers who don't play them.

Perhaps I'm putting to much emphasis on the managers pulling power but I do believe that there are few out there that on merit alone would be able to attract top talent and perhaps even on the cheap-ish compared to their rivals.

I can't really think of an example of a great player going to a unsuccessful club because of their manager. I'm sure there has to be some...

I think it's a bit harsh to call us unsuccessful. Can we agree on struggling instead? 🙂

All I'm saying is, if we had a capacity in the seat, one that loads of players looked up to or even admired as a player too we'd perhaps have a slight edge compared to our rivals.

Perhaps I'm wrong. I'd like us to test my theory though!

I understand, but I think it's more important to play the right way, have a decent salary and to be successful, if you want to ge the right players.

We won't be getting any of the top tier of players, we need to be getting similar players to Spurs and Newcastle, on the cheap, neither of whom have respected managers.

The way we play is pivotal of course but I do believe some of the managers I mentioned with a pedigree as a player too has got some very interesting ideas and an attacking-minded setup I'd like to see at Anfield.

Someone else may have this info, haven't time to catch up on the thread, but still, I'll tell you anyway.

My mate's text me last night & said Rafa has been approached & sounded out about working in a structure under Van Gaal. No more than that though.

Now I didn't wanna post this till I knew where it came from & just spoke to my mate's cousin, he's good friends with a player at the club & has a place very close to him, we've spoken at length about it before & I know they are close. He confirmed this came straight from the player, so this isn't the usual Chinese whispers bullshit, it's as close to the horse's mouth as you get.
