I reckon I could fool Stevie with some white wine and food colouring.

It's actually not as ridiculous as it seems. There is a very wide spectrum with both red and white. I guarantee you wouldn't fool him into thinking it was a big jammy new world Shiraz.

I'm not feeling togetherness. I think something happened between the impulse, or the loyalty creating interest, and the final togetherness thing.

Instead we took a detour, people are threatening violence, and I'm causing someones eyes to bleed.

Tbh you just sound a bit fucking weird with that stuff.

Hah - I am fucking weird with that shit.

It's what makes life interesting.

I do understand your points about tribalism - actually more than you give me credit for - because I see a lot of it over here- stuff that would make your skin crawl.

For me, people that tend to be most in to the "tribal thing" tend to be a bit thick - but I'm dealing with people with mostly, little or no connection to Liverpool, the city or the people, but feel they do.

It's very different to what happens back home.

Still ducking and diving away from actually answering the point, I see.

Shame. I thought it was a reasonable exchange. I certainly didn't care about 'winning' or being proved right.

I'd take it.

I don't live in the city, mind, so it's easier for me.

But, if losing the battle ultimately gave us a better chance of winning the war, I'm all in.

I think you're thinking of the tribal side of it too literally. It doesn't have to be conscious and entail obviously aggressive and loudly partisan support etc to qualify.

I just mean it in the sense of being unreasoning and biased.

We support Liverpool. For our whole lives. Isn't that a clue? Why wouldn't we be swapping teams and tuning in and out if it were merely a hobby?

Alright, an addiction then.

Unreasoned & biased could be applied to a religion.

As for hobby - if the hobby is supporting liverpool, that doesn't mean you'll start supporting another team, in the same way if you build model airplanes, you won't suddenly take up knitting if you get fucked off with the harrier jump-jet you're struggling to build.

That's what I'm gonna whisper into his mutilated ear just before I blood eagle the bell.

I'll be having a full bodied Barossa Shiraz while I'm snacking on your still beating heart after ripping from your chest.

Yeah, it could also be applied to religious behaviour. But my contention is that although it could be seen as religious it's actually much more a tribal thing.

And, as you say, other things are similar. I'd never considered wine as a candidate (!) but something like politics certainly is.

I don't really see what's so controversial. Supporting a team through thick and thin - usually because of somr personal connection - and exalting in its success and hating certain rivals etc etc is so obviously a manifestation of tribalism that I'm honestly surprised anyone has bothered to challenge the idea.
