Small club mentality

Just seen Can saying 'we're always up for the big games against the big teams'.
Says everything you need to know about the mentality of the club and the team these days. We're the fucking big team. Not the other way around. Could we please get some nasty, win-at-all-costs, fuck the rest, let's-win-some-fucking-thing players in? Such a bunch of pussies.
It is possible that I'm very tired and hungry and am over-reacting. Or am I?

I'm hungry too, but don't read the comments that way.

Dortmund are a 'big' club (i always think big and small is a stupidly childish way of describing clubs). Two big teams can play each other.

I'm not doubting that Dortmund are a big club. And I do know that two big clubs can play each other. I'm merely annoyed that one of our players differentiates between any clubs and the need to 'get up' for any game. Load of wank.

Surely it is more likely for players who perceive themselves to be already at a big club to struggle to "get up" for any games that don't involve other big clubs

Yea, if anything I think we have too many players who think they have made it already without ever really doing fuck all.

I imagine getting your move to Liverpool or whoever is seen as making it. It's the mentality of desperately wanting to then be a winner once you get there that seems to be lacking in so many of them.

We haven't won the league in 20 something years. We aren't that big any more.
And we're 9th in the league hoping to scrape Europa League at this point.

We are a historically big club. Emphasis on historic.

Yeah, no doubt.
Leeds and Nottingham too.

Rafa had us in the right direction with our consistency at European level, then it all went tits up.
Hopefully Klopp turns it around.

Dortmund are the best team we've been up against all season. Nothing strange about his comments.

Well let's face it, they don't have to do much to achieve based on recent seasons. A league cup would be considered success by some within the club.

Lovren acted like he'd made it when he joined and looked like he thought he didn't have to work at it anymore. The reality is that he should have worked at it even harder. He's changed this season and his performances show that. You don't make it when you join us. You make it when you succeed on the pitch for us.

He didn't say we're a small team or that we're not a big club. If anything I'd be pissed off that he's more or less admitted we're up for it more when it's a big game.

It's a touch hypocritical picking up on player mentality via easily misinterpreted media quotes, when the best you can muster as a fan all season is "we're shit/we're wankers", while insisting we're still a big club, etc. It sounds idiotic.

Can probably means we usually turn up for the big games whilst not always the case against the smaller teams (west ham/palace at home) which is probably true

Even then that was more of a serious of fortunate events than form
Nah nothing having that.
CL win
FA cup win
CL final
Runners up in the league
All in the span of 4 years. We were a big side then but since Torres left we've been small time bar one great season where we ended up with sweet fuck all.

Hate to pedantic but that 4yr run ended 7 years ago, not 10. And we finished 2nd two yrs ago while reaching 2 finals under Kenny.

Any team can make a push and finish 2nd, Spurs are gonna do it this year. Winning the CL, coming runners up and winning the FA Cuo put us back on the map. Finishing 2nd needed to a stepping stone to a title or another CL final, unfortunately it wasn't and we fell away again.

Of course, but how do you measure us being a big club? Were we a big club again in 2001, then not a big club again until 2005, and then only marginally a big club because we won lesser cups after that?

Historically we're a big club, and we've still had more success and final appearances than most since the turn of the century. Of course we have to be challenging again and I'm not proclaiming us to be a huge success right now, but we've won everything there is to win and have the resources and some of the tools in place to win stuff again. As we have done for a long time. We're an underachieving club at the moment, but that doesn't deter what we've built up over the years and what huge success we've had, and can still have.

Well, yes an no. You're still in and around success if you lose a final, or come second. You're regularly challenging - at least - for trophies, and showing enough consistency. And if you come second often enough, one year you'll win, and that's a good habit.
